Finding Ego
Ego is consciousness clinging to ideas. A person who can’t stop fixating about those ideas has a strong ego, and so they become predictable. An artist, a musician, a speaker, a writer … they all have certain ways – certain ego traits that we can recognise. We can identify their style, their culture, their self-esteem.
In order to fit in to a society and survive, we may need such a projection so that others can relate to us. But what if we aren’t so sure of everything? What if we don’t know what to hold on to? What if we’re a nobody? We aren’t going to survive very well. We either have to live on our wits, or constantly fail at everything.
We need a little ego, a style, a language to which others can relate. How do we do that?
Developing and bringing forward the little ego that’s in the background builds resilience and confidence to handle life’s challenges – without being easily swayed either by others’ opinions or our own self-doubt. We may not be an expert, but we can cope.
Unlike the arrogance of a big ego, a healthy ego acts as a stable foundation on the path to enlightenment. It’s something to work with.
Find ego; find the path.
