Spiritual centres – what to be aware of.
Spiritual centres have two aspects, the meaning of the teaching and…people! The meaning of the teachings is what we go for… the people can be a problem. However, people can work as a catalyst for the real meaning of the teachings.
What one may encounter in spiritual centres is the enthusiasm for putting one’s hand together, follow rituals and acquiring an exotic vocabulary. You may find something missing – compassion. There is compassion, but it’s generally for those who dwell afar – not in the same room!
The law of desire, aversion and indifference work just as well in a meditation room as well as in the outside world. There are people we lean towards, there are people we keep away from and there are people we ignore. If we can appreciate this we will do fine.
We have to fit into a spiritual centre with all its uncomfortable dynamics. The constant thought arises “Do I have to be like them?” No, you don’t. One learns to listen, nod and smile…and move on!
How do you feel about this?
