The Dharma is beyond sleep.
Or … it can put you to sleep.
Dharma is our natural wakeful state of pure consciousness, the wondrous essence of our being. But when Dharma becomes a religion, a form is created with lots of words and symbols, supposedly to remind us to wake up. When we become attracted and bewitched by the form, however, we forget essence which, in Tibetan, is called ‘rigpa’ – which is just a word.
When this happens, compassion becomes just another word – it may be ‘karuna’ in Sanskrit, or ‘nying-je’ in Tibetan. Every time I hear anyone use the word ‘dukkha’ for suffering, I switch off and go to sleep. 😀
No! Not really – I scream!
And that wakes me up.
