JESUS AND BUDDHA

Jesus and Buddha.

It could be seen that the Buddha and Jesus say the same things. Firstly, I have to say that, as a Buddhist, I do not believe in God – but I believe in the very nature of God. Not God as an external, but within.

Jesus said, “I and my father are one.”
Buddha said, “The two truths are a unity.”

Of course, these may be seen as totally different statements if you are A Buddhist! or A Christian! but to me, they do look the same. Maybe something got changed in the translation, or they are meant to appear different.

As sentient beings, we have two aspects: one is our absolute true nature and the other is a mental fabrication. An absolute truth and a relative truth. These are inseparable – by virtue of one the other is known. So the “I” is our relative truth, and “Father” is our absolute truth. I am that, which I seek.

This is not only logical, but provable. We are awareness – pure awareness. Without awareness nothing would be known, and you wouldn’t be reading this! So that is proof in itself.

Now, this awareness can either be aware of something ‘out there’ – which is relative, conventional truth – or it can be aware of the awareness itself – pure awareness/absolute truth, empty of any fabrications.

Jesus and Buddha are of the same Essence Love: they just express that love slightly differently…as we all do.

Jesus said, “Love thy neighbour as thy self.”
Buddha said, “Love others more than yourself.”

Taking ourselves out of the picture is exchanging negative energy for positive energy,
“Thy will be done” is natural expression of spontaneous pure awareness, expressing Essence Love.

“My will be done” is the devil-game we play now. There is no devil out there. The devil is ‘me’, playing with a mentally acquired image of myself.

EVIL

Evil

We will all have a problem with this word “evil”, because of our background and education: it is a trick of religion to control and generate guilt. when looking at this word, we have to suspend our preconceived ideas of what that might be. As we have seen before, a word can have many depths of meaning: evil could be seen as closed mindedness, to lean away from, to have an aversion, dislike, fear, hate. The words “lie” and “exaggeration” can be seen as having different meanings, but they have the same flavour of deception. Anything that closes us off is seen as a poison. These are all degrees of harmful thoughts and actions, which create suffering towards, and for, others = evil.

If we can keep the idea that the evil is outside us, then we can mistakenly assume that we are the good. We have to look within. Evil is not just a obvious grimacing, black, cloaked, fiery, figure with a forked tail, horns and cloven hooves who eats babies (actually, the universe is vast so that’s not impossible!) Evil is something within our own consciousness – our likes and dislikes – it is in our hopes and fears that it resides. Anything that keeps us in the darkness of ignorance can be seen as evil, and that is the darkness of our conceptual minds – our job is to illuminate that darkness.

I had a great difficulty with the concept of evil, until I stated doing devotional Tibetan deity practice. It’s a long text that I chant every day, thinking that this was a Tibetan ‘thing’.

…pacify all illness, negative forces and obstacles…

…turn way black magic and evil spells…

…pacify the mental obscurations, insanity, strokes, and illness…

annihilate viciousness and ill-will…

(strong stuff!)

“There is no real evil,” I thought, “well, not in the west anyway”…hmm!? Then, I noticed what was going on in the world, in life and in the mind, and how like attracts like, and thought, “What did the Buddha know? Perhaps he was preparing us for the Kali Yuga.”

This is another prayer we say:

Drubwang Tsoknyi Rinpoche

Don’t wander, don’t wander, place mindfulness on guard;

Along the road of distraction, Mara lies in ambush.

Mara is this mind, clinging to like and dislike;

So look into the essence of this magic, free from dualistic fixation.

Realise that your mind is unfabricated primal purity.

There is no buddha elsewhere; look at your own face.

There is nothing else to search for, rest in your own place.

Non-meditation is spontaneous perfection, so capture the royal seat.

(Mara are demons.)

I’ve been on several retreats where there was talk of demons: there are two forces in the universe – enlightened (light) and unenlightened (dark). We as sentient being are unenlightened, having both these potentials – the dark and the light – and can divided into two groups, practitioners and non practitioners.

It is said that to achieve a human existence is as rare as a blind turtle coming up the surface of an ocean, once every hundred years, and putting its head through a rubber ring. A practitioner is even rarer!

However, practitioners also have a problem of developing certain skills, and going no further – (this was the case with Milarepa). They are not enlightened, but realise a partial truth, and gain certain powers which they enjoy…but it is also a curse- they can find no real peace. They hate those who practise and find peace and compassion. These practitioners who have stopped practising have become the demons! They hate people being happy, and feed off our negative emotions – they cannot help themselves.

We can even get a feeling of this in ourselves, when we gossip and find fault with others. It’s a feeding frenzy that attracts others to be negative. Those who are pure are easily condemned…and even killed – just look at history! Neurolinguistics are used to create an enemy, and sentient beings follow.

So, when we give in to negative emotions, life gets worse.

The answer is simply to understand the true nature of the emotion, and remain in Emptiness. Evil demons do not understand Emptiness, as they did not complete their training. But they do need our compassion. Compassion is grown up work. The evil is not outside, it is the mind caught in the darkness of ignorance.

MANIPULATING THE POPULATION

Manipulating the population.

We all know the old ‘good cop bad cop’ routine. Well, this is exactly what is happening in the world, at both international and local levels. ‘Someone’ has their hands on a metaphorical social-political-military ‘Machine’ with knobs on it!

There are two knobs on this ‘Machine’: they read, ‘righteous’ (good knob) and ‘subversive interference’ (bad knob). They are both, in fact, subversion knobs, but one is more obvious than the other. They work by changing the frequency of a situation.

Simply put, the bad knob is turned on and gives power to an opposing force. Some years later, the righteous knob is then turned on to correct the imbalance that was created by the bad knob. The power is changed back again – all in the name of righteousness. And, of course back again years later! It keeps people very jumpy, and never sure what is going on…because the ‘Machine’ is in charge!

Whoever set the ‘Machine’ in motion is long gone, but will be a member of the same club who controls the ‘Machine’ now. Left or right, it’s all the same…the ‘Machine’ is in charge, and socially engineers everything. There are two knobs, but only one hand operating them, and so it is an illusion that there are two opposing sides.

As an example, we all know that children in schools should get exercise (good knob on). Excessive laws of health and safety are applied, which then has the effect of children’s activities being reduced (good knob off, bad knob on). But then, we know that children should get exercise (bad knob off, good knob on). This is how the ‘Machine” works: we are being manipulated by being told what is common sense, which makes us doubt our own common sense.

Have ever wondered what on earth was going on

WITH ALL THESE CHANGING RULES?!

It doesn’t matter which sphere of life we are talking about – Politics, Health, Diet, Local Authority power, Education – it’s all the same…by alternating the knobs, everyone is kept jumpy!

These knobs are especially useful within spirituality: righteousness becomes a weapon of righteous anger, which is then justified using righteousness again…creating a very jumpy consciousness. This is not just happening on the global political stage, it is happening right down to our personal relationships .

Control your own knobs,

because someone is doing it for you.

The ‘Machine’ can only function if we react.

What do you think?

 Just to clarify.

“Not reacting” means not falling into one’s habitual patterning of behaviour.
Not reacting clears the mind, and allows us to see a situation through fresh eyes.
We then can take an appropriate action according to our capacity.
It is not doing nothing: it is finding out what to do, and then doing it.

If we re-act, we can be manipulated. We are then subject to the old one-two – provoking a reaction out of you in response to a feint!

To think that we are all the good guys is a mistake: we are only fooling ourselves.
Knowing that we make mistakes means we can learn, as there is always further to go.

KARMIC RECOGNITION

Karmic Recognition

Sometimes we hear a name, or a sound, or read a word and it sparks something within us: we may get a tingling sensation of recognition.  It could be that we have a karmic connection from a previous incarnation, and it’s worthwhile taking a second look at that experience.  For me, the name Milarepa stirred something.

OM MANI PADME HUM

The following text accompanied the Youtube video: it details the meaning of Om Mani Peme Hung. However, if one just has a sincere feeling of compassion, that is enough.

OM MANI PADME HUM ( OM MANI PEME HUNG )
The Jewel in the Lotus – The Mantra of Compassion
This is the highest Mantra for mankind
gifted to us by the thousand Buddhas
out of their compassion
for all sentient beings.

It will protect us from all harm ,
sufferings , ill health , hell regions,

It will purify us and free us from all our negative
emotions of the Mind and speech.

This mantra saves us from the hell regions and
hungry ghosts which we have to encounter during
and after death.

Hence it is beneficial and a most valubale saviour
not only during Life on Earth
but also after Life , when we have to remain
and pass through the six Hell regions in the Bardos.

Each syllable in this six syllable Mantra liberates us
from one realm of suffering out of each of the six realms
of suffering filled existence.
OM liberates and purifies us from the emotions of
bliss and pride in the samsaric realm
of the Gods.
MA liberates and purifies us from the emotions of
jealousy and lust for entertainment in the samsaric realm
of Demi-Gods.

passion and desire in the samsaric realm
of Humans.

stupidity and prejudice in the samsaric realm
of animals.
ME liberates and purifies us from the emotions of
poverty and possessiveness in the samsaric realm
of hungry ghosts.

HUM liberates and purifies us from the emotions of
agression and hatred in the samsaric realm
of hell.

In this way by freeing our consciousness ,
our spirit energy from the neurotic attachments
that our senses are bonded with through
the cravings and aversions constantly
taking place inside of us …

and in this way creating negative karmas
that keep us bound to sufferings
and also creating samsara.

The mantra OM MANI PADME HUM
purifies us at 3 levels –

Mind, Speech and Body

and in this way liberates us
from all our negative karmas.
Within a short time of meditating on this Mantra ,
you will experience the opening and development of your
heart chakra and begin to feel highly kind and compassionate
towards other sentient beings including animals ,
even the tiny helpless ones .
You will develop a magnetic aura around you that will draw
other people towards you , attracting them like a magnet
attracts iron filings and love wll begin to flow in your Life.
Saying this mantra for 21 minutes daily will energise and
develop your Heart Chakra and …..
when the Heart and Mind become united ,
anything is possible.

This Mantra is popularly known as
” The Jewel in the Lotus “or
” The Diamond in the Lotus ”
( “mani” means Diamond , a precious jewel
and Padma means Lotus flower which is the
spiritual symbol of consciousness )
The Jewel refers to the Mind or consciousness and
the Lotus refers to the Heart that is the source of Love energy
The meaning of OM MANI PADME HUM is
“Om , salutations to the Jewel of consciousness (the Mind)
which has reached the Heart’s lotus. ”
A Very Very Important Message Regarding Mantras
Your outer world is governed by
your inner world, so Divine Powers
that are generated inside you ,
now start making all positive events
happen in your life in the outer world.

This inner world is nothing but your
intent which actually you are expressing in
the mantra.

COMPASSION IN ACTION

Compassion in action.

Compassion is a tricky subject. We start by being kind to ourselves…”There I go again! But at least I learned something.”
We all assume that we are compassionate – until the moment our button gets pressed, and then off we go…
that steaming-snorting-smelly-self-righteous monster appears again! And if we are a ‘spiritual person’ we do this with a ‘loving’ smile!

We have to be honest, but not be too hard on ourselves. If we are spiritual warriors, we can, in fact, be joyous at this test.
That very steaming-snorting-smelly-self-righteous monster is our teacher!

If we have the guts to face our demons, they just disappear.: they are our own likes and dislikes that are always waiting to ambush us.

Compassion is the outcome of recognising our pure, cognisant nature. When this happens,
an unshakeable confidence arises – together with a sense of relief and joy: this is compassion and we can now face anything.

When this three-fold nature of Pure Cognisant Compassion looks out, it recognises sentient beings’ true potential
as having Pure Cognisant Compassion…they simply do not recognise it. Seeing that, loving, spacious compassion naturally arises.

However, an inner conflict can occur when ego-clinging is still present, and Compassion arises at the same time.
Let’s be honest: we’re not enlightened yet! We are pulled in two directions at once. We all know the feeling of the love-hate scenario.

The most important point is that when a situation arises, and one is about to get angry (or any of the other emotions arise),
it is an opportunity to see one’s own state and be honest. In not reacting, space is created and compassion can take place…sometimes, silence is golden!

There are also the enlightened, compassionate activities of pacifying, magnetising, enriching and destroying,
but in these there can be no ego present, otherwise it will backfire.

Compassion in action comes from the fearless dignity of knowing one’s true nature, and that of others.

No outside force can ever disturb this!

Spirituality is tough on ego. Tough? Its job is to destroy ego’s game.

SIX ADVANCED PARAMITAS

Six Advanced Paramitas.

There are six aspects that help us on our journey: they are called the six paramitas – generosity, discipline, patience, perseverance, meditation and transcendent knowledge. When we first look at them, they sound straightforward enough. They are practised with effort, but, as in all teachings, there are deeper meanings, or more refined meanings. These are practised without effort!

I try not to use strange words, but the expression ‘pure awareness’ or ‘pure perception’ is called Rigpa in Tibetan, and Vidya in Sanskrit. In Tibetan, one word can have many meanings, so it all depends on the context in which the word is used. This is why teachings need a commentary…and quite often we need a commentary on the commentary! Then, we have to engage in our own reflection and analysis.

It is important to remember that the experience is beyond the words. Tibetan was created from the Sanskrit language and is based on spirituality, and it is therefore difficult sometimes to find an equivalent English word (goodness knows what texting will do to the language of future generations!).

Once we have a glimpse of pure awareness (Rigpa), the continuity of that is conduct. Conduct is the practice while the mind is in rigpa, and also in everyday life

The six advanced paramitas.

These six paramitas (generosity, discipline, patience, perseverance, meditation and knowledge)  are included in Rigpa/pure awareness.

Rigpa Generosity.                                                                                                                                                                        Generosity here is non-fixating and so there is no clinging. Non-fixation is the practice of generosity. Rigpa generosity is not the generosity of giving away, which is the conceptual generation of merit: when it is included in Rigpa, it belongs to wisdom – it is transcendent generosity. So we are practising generosity at the relative level and the absolute level at the same time, as they are inseparable. The essence of generosity is non-clinging.

Rigpa Discipline.                                                                                                                                                                                        In Rigpa, there is no attachment, and that is the paramita of discipline. In keeping discipline, one may become conceited and attached. Discipline has the function of binding your negative actions so that you can remain in a virtuous state. But it has side effects – you can become conceited because you are so pure…this can result in the creation of a social “I”. This can also happen with the view – one can become attached to this view also. The essence of discipline is non-attachment.

Rigpa Patience.                                                                                                                                        While you are in the continuity of rigpa there is no fear, and that absence of fear denotes the paramita of patience. The essence of patience is fearlessness.

Rigpa Perseverance.                                                                                                                                        In rigpa there is no effort, and so therefore there is no perseverance. When you are distracted you make effort. The essence of perseverance is effortlessness.

Rigpa Meditation.                                                                                                                                                                                    This is not being distracted. The essence of meditation is effortless remaining.

Rigpa Transcendent Knowledge.                                                                                                                                                  This is Rigpa. It is wisdom itself – pure awareness. Wisdom resting in the ground in its innateness. The essence of Rigpa is clear view.

Within Rigpa, conduct is meditation in action- the six paramitas. Our mind does not leave the clear view. Conduct is the 6 paramitas being automatically expressed, without effort. You will be naturally generous etc.

To summarise, there are the paramitas that are practised with effort, and those that are practised without effort, and which come automatically out of the view (known as the all-sufficient king).

It is like a healing coming from within: if we are doing something wrong, when Rigpa is remembered, it will have an effect on our outer behaviour = CONDUCT!

MANTRAS

Mantras.

 Where science meets the spiritual.

A mantra (Devanāgarī: मन्त्र; Tib.སྔགས་ ngak; Wyl. sngags) [1] is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that is considered capable of “creating transformation” (cf. spiritual transformation).[2] Its use and type varies according to the school and philosophy associated with the mantra.[3]

I am not an expert on mantras, I just repeat hundreds of thousands of them!

Mantras seem to have started in the Sanskrit language, in India. As Sanskrit is a spiritual language, the words are said to hold a power. The Tibetan language is based on Sanskrit, so that too holds a power. But probably any sound that holds a meaning can be used!

A mantra consists of a number of short words of one or two syllables, which make it very easy to chant and memorise. That’s why Sanskrit is so useful. Whether it is psychological or literal, it work.

Mantras are a very powerful tool, and work on many levels. Mantra works on the mind, body and subtle body. They can either be chanted out loud, or internally so that they can resonate in the body and the mind. The psychology of mantras works, as their repetition can remind the mind of certain qualities.

OM or AUM is fine to use. By the way, Sanskrit is built on the vowel sounds and modified by the shape of the mouth. In fact everything comes from the sound A! which is the natural sound of a baby, and some say it is the sound of the universe.

Let’s take OM MANI PEME HUM.

This is a mantra to imbue compassion – our natural, innate compassion.

It means ‘Jewel in the Lotus’ – Emptiness in Compassion, which is Unconditional Compassion.

Knowing the full meaning is not necessary: one just needs a flavour. Sometimes, we get too bogged down in concepts. There is a hundred syllable mantra which clears negative action and thoughts, but I’ve never bothered to find out what every word means: I just understand the general meaning and it seems to work!

In certain practices, as one chants, one can also visualise.

What is interesting – and is the reason for writing this – is that, if one chants internally, one realises that one cannot think of two things at the same time! However. one can still visualise, and have all the senses open. Therefore we can cut through extraneous thoughts!

Now this is the science, we cannot think of two things at the same time! So I’m wondering, if this is so, while chanting nothing else (accept the meaning of the mantra) can be transmitted to us!

So. if you are having a problem with thoughts during meditation, try a mantra. Gradually slow the mantra down, a space will develop between the soundings. Then you may find that the sounding only needs to be made every now and again like hitting a bell. When the sound goes, resound.

What is important in meditation is the space created, just to be. But sometime in meditation we need to engage the mind in something different, just for a change!

Another point about mantra, is that it supplicate divine help. There are deities (enlightened beings) that have certain attributes, which are also within ourselves, so this helps enhance them. This is part of devotional practices. When we supplicate we receive blessings, or rather we are more open to them!

Phat!!! (pronounced pheh!!! sharply) Is supposed to shake conceptual thinking, and put you straight back where you belong! Shout this several times if you are feeling sleepy.

The mantra OM MANI PEME HUM is a supplication to the Lord of Compassion. Now that Lord can be any image we wish, it’s still Compassion!

Om mani peme hum is actually the mantra of Chenrezi(g). The reason I mention this is that at death, and during the after death process, and just before taking a new incarnation, if one does not have a specific practice of any method, one can call on the ‘Lord of Compassion’.

The point is, as we are driven by our karma we will not be sure of our next incarnation, unless we recognise all the stages of what is called the gaps between death and birth (Bardo). So, calling on the Lord of Compassion and seeing everything as ‘Unconditional Love’ and all potential couples in union as deities, then this pure intention will help for a positive incarnation.

HOW ARE THINGS GOING?

Because of all our differences in understanding, and use of language, you may wish to have some expressions that I’ve used redefined, so please do feel free to question. You may want to have the distinction between “perception” and “awareness” clarified, for example – I can’t say I’d have the exact answer, but I’d have a good attempt!

I AM A BISCUIT

I am a biscuit – I’ll explain.

For a biscuit to exists, it needs ingredients – flour, water, sugar, butter – and cooking.

Every thing is made up of ingredients, just like a biscuit, and all the components have to be there in order for it to exist.

The “I” is made up of ingredients – form, feeling, perception, karmic formation and consciousness: these are called the five aggregates, or skandha. These are the ingredients to make up a sentient being. If we take one of these parts away and ‘we’ fall apart, just like taking the wheels off a car – it no longer functions as a car.

So how did this come about?

What we are is pure awareness – sacred space, with no embellishments…no ingredients! One day, this pure awareness was attracted to something – it was attracted to being aware! It had a feeling of personal existence – an I – thus creating the skandha, and it forgot pure being.

This incident (which is maintained every moment now!) initiated the filling of open space with concepts. Through desire, emptiness became filled with concepts, and that was the beginning of ego-clinging …ignorance …and suffering! To hold the whole thing together, we needed ingredients – the five skandha.

So sentient beings are created out of ignorance of their true nature. Then, that sentient being just went on creating, and enjoying its creation…until it found that this creation is the very cause of its suffering. This creation then has to be maintained and defended, giving rise to aggression and hatred and all the other negative emotions. “Oi, do we suffer!”

However… once we recognise our true nature, we can enjoy the biscuit, but know it has no reality! Then bodhicitta can arises (working for the benefit of others), which becomes the reason to create…love!

Each moment is an opportunity to re-establish our true nature, by not re-acting.

Our only problem now is that, in having made the biscuit in the kitchen, we now have to clean up all the residue. That is the process of eliminating karma (it is that which is still holding the biscuit together). We do this by not re-acting.

When we finally put everything away, and no more biscuits can be made, we are free to do whatever we choose! The end of the ‘biscuit business’ brings the arising of unconditional love…so what are you going to do with that?!

JUMPY PEOPLE

Jumpy people.

This modern world is very alert, very cognisant, and full of jumpy people. We live on speed!

This has the effect of making everything seem super real…bigger…faster. It is as if someone has turned the ‘frequency knob’ up to 11, which has the effect of creating emotional stress and exhaustion. This illusion, if justified, becomes a delusion.

That is the road to serious mental health problems, which will have an effect on our immune systems: we will be told to take a pill for this, and pay the price. By now, we must feel that something is not right.

On forums, as in life, people are running around trying to find where ‘it’s’ at, believing in all sorts of nonsense, and trying to reinvent the wheel. This is because they do not believe the wheel they already have is actually a wheel. Arguing about everything only serves to make the illusion real and keeps us trapped. You can see where this is leading – a planet of insane, jumpy people!

Of course, the special people who are reading this ‘know’ where it’s at  😉  …but we still get caught up in the frenzy, don’t we?

In the old world, people were not so alert and jumpy: their emotions were more stable, and therefore their minds were clearer. Maybe they didn’t bother so much…“There’s always tomorrow…” This is why, in meditation, we are barely aware, and not super aware. We have to slow down and relax for clarity to occur. There is no rush. Being barely aware, we noticed more, and we are more at peace.

The world in which we physically live is created by other’s dreams – or nightmares! The “You can have it now! You can do it now! Yes, you can!” society. Years ago, everything was done by hand with great skill, whereas now a machine does it, and then corrects it for us.

I suspect that social engineering is taking place in a big way, with the aim of making people jumpy. It’s a laboratory rats’ maze. This is where I would differ from traditional teachings…your ignorance is not all your fault.

But this does not mean we waste our time blaming others. We have to deal with it ourselves. Even the Buddhas cannot do it for us. Through inspiration, they indicate the way, and all we have to do is stop following the chattering mind.

(That ‘frequency knob’ is interesting. I get the feeling someone has their hands on two knobs – one is normal (common sense) and one is abnormal. From time to time, the knobs are alternatively switched on and off. For example, children should get exercise (normal knob on) but this requires more and more health and safety laws, so less exercise is the outcome (abnormal knob on/normal knob off). Then…children should get more exercise (normal knob on/abnormal knob off). Politics, health, diet, local authorities, education…it’s all the same…the result is to make people jumpy! There are also very subtle, insidious knobs, and that is to do with spirituality.)

DESIRE AND FRUSTRATION CREATE ADDICTION

Desire and Frustration Create Addiction

There are good and bad things happening in the universe,

which we cannot know or do anything about.

So there is no point worrying about them.

There are good and bad things happening in our country

which we will cannot know or do anything about.

So there is no point worrying about them.

There are good and bad things happening in our family,

which we cannot know or do anything about.

So there is no point worrying about them.

There are good and bad things happening in our minds,

which we can know and do something about.

So there is no point worrying about them.

We worry, because we fantasise.

Fantasy is wanting something we cannot find.

Desire and Frustration is the human condition.

Desire and Frustration is addiction!

There will always be agreeing, arguing, hope and fear…that is the busy-ness of being human, an animal or an alien. And, this will never change as the universe is infinite.

The only thing we can do something about is the state of our minds. We can know its true nature, and be happy. It may not change the universe, country or our family, even the buddhas cannot do that. However, it will change the way we see things, and open us up to our true potential. The moment we know the nature of our minds, we start to infuse every situation with compassion.

I guess that is what the enlightened ones are doing, if we could only awaken and receive their blessing. Perhaps they too are a fantasy… but they do inspire.

These blessing start us on a journey to understand the good and the bad things happening in the universe, and perhaps do something about them. All we need is the right intention, and our way is somehow made clearer!

We have two natures – light and dark. If we listen to one, the universe gets better. If we listen to the the other, the universe gets worse.

THE FIVE SKANDA

The five Skanda.

In Buddhistphenomenology and soteriology, the skandhas (Sanskrit) or khandhas (Pāli, aggregates in English) are the five functions or aspects that constitute the human being. The Buddha teaches that nothing among them is really “I” or “mine”.

The five skandhas

The sutras describe five aggregates:

“form” or “matter”: external and internal matter. Externally, rupa is the physical world. Internally, rupa includes the material body and the physical sense organs.

“sensation” or “feeling”. Sensing an object as either pleasant or unpleasant or neutral.

“perception”, “conception”, “apperception”, “cognition”, or “discrimination” : registers whether an object is recognized or not (for instance, the sound of a bell or the shape of a tree).

“mental formations”, “impulses”, “volition”, or “compositional factors” all types of mental habits, thoughts, ideas, opinions, prejudices, compulsions, and decisions triggered by an object.

“consciousness” or “discernment”-shes-pa):

in the Nikayas/Āgamas: cognizance, that which discerns

In the Abhidhamma: a series of rapidly changing interconnected discrete acts of cognizance.

In some Mahayana sources: the base that supports all experience.

( There are many buddhist traditions, and will describe words slightly differently.)

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

This a good insight into mindfulness meditation. The music could seem distracting, but one can incorporate it into the meditation.

It’s interesting that she calls this vipassana, when other traditions would classify this is shamata practice. Vipassana is “insight meditation”, of being aware of awareness – a step further than merely stilling the mind. But hey, each to their own…it’s still a good video!

THE TWO TRUTHS – TSOKNYI RINPOCHE

Working with a mere “i”, is working with the two truths. That is working in the Dharma.

THE ILLUSION IS REAL

The Illusion is Real.

Anything constructed in the universe is not of a permanent state. At some time every thing breaks down into its subtle elements. So, every thing only has the illusion of reality.

The very nature of everything is its lack of reality. That lack of reality is real, hence the illusion is real! This is so vital to understand that I wish there was a bigger word to emphasise how big and important this is!!!

This is the basis of the two truths – relative and ultimate.

One could say, the ultimate in the relative.

This is also the basis for the symbolic teacher.

Every moment that an appearance happens in the mind (due to external events, which includes thoughts in the mind) is the cause of a reaction, which creates an emotion. Neither the event nor the reaction has any basis of reality. However, they have a basis for reality, as there is an awareness of these appearances: this awareness is the relative aspect of our being, and remains in the realm of relative truth. The other aspect is our absolute nature, which is pure – pure perception – which is emptiness, or in sanskrit, Shunyata.

Understanding this means that we can give things – and people – their true value, as no thing lasts. We can respect them, have fun with them, love them, but have no permanent attachment to their relative state: we can, however, recognise their true nature as being absolute truth. So, everything now becomes our ‘symbolic teacher’ – a reminder of everything’s true nature.

The two truths are inseparable: by virtue of one, the other is known. But first we need to have recognised our inner teacher, which is pure awareness. This can only be known by having access to an outer teacher, who reveals the inner teacher to you. Without this, we will remain in concepts: it is very easy to assume that we know our inner teacher when it is still our thinking mind.

Some of these teachings can take weeks to explain: reflect upon them, and digest them slowly!

“THERE ARE NO ABSOLUTES!”

“There are no Absolutes!”

“Are you Absolutely sure about that?”

It’s an absolute win win situation. If one says, “It is absolutely true that there are no absolutes,” then that is an absolute. If one is not sure that there are no absolutes, then that leave room for absolutes to exist.

Isn’t life fun?

THE ANIMAL REALM- CHOGYAM TRUNGPA

We have spoken about the Tibetan Buddhism six psychological realms. These are the god realm, the jealous god realm, the human realm, the animal realm, the hungry ghosts and the hell realms.

I just happened to come across Chogyam Trungpa’s description of the animal realm in his book, The Myth of Freedom, which you may find interesting. This describes the type of people that are serious, lack humour and are mechanical. It seems to describe the New World Order mentality.

Stupidity.

The descriptions of the different realms are related to subtle but distinct differences in the way individuals handle themselves in daily life – how they walk, talk, write letter, the way they read, eat, sleep and so on.

Everyone tends to develop a style which is peculiar to them. If we hear a tape recording of our voices or see a video of ourselves, we are often shocked to see our style as someone else sees it. It feels extremely alien. Usually we find other people’s point of view irritating or embarrassing.

Blindness to our style, to how others see us, is most acute in the animal realm. I am not speaking literally being born as an animal but of the quality of mind, a mentality which stubbornly pushes forward towards predetermined goals.

The animal mentality is very serious. It even makes humour into a serious occupation. Self-consciously trying to create a friendly environment, a person will crack jokes or try to be funny, intimate or clever. However, animals do not really smile or laugh; they just behave.

They may play, but it is unusual for animals to actually laugh. They might make friendly noises or gestures, but the subtleties of a sense of humour are absent.

The animal mentality looks directly ahead, as if wearing blinkers. It never looks to the left or right but very sincerely goes straight ahead, trying to reach the next available situation, continually trying to adjust situations to make them conform to its expectations.

The animal realm is associated wit stupidity: that is preferring to play deaf and dumb, preferring to follow the rules of available games rather than re-define them. Of course, you might try to manipulate your perception of any given game, but you are really just following along, just following instinct.

You have some hidden or secret wish that you would like to put into effect, so when you come to obstacles, to irritations, you just push forward regardless of whether or not you may hurt someone or destroy something of value.

You just go out and pursue whatever is available and if something else comes up, you take advantage of that as well ans pursue it.

The ignorance or stupidity of the animal realm comes from a deadly honest and serious mentality which is quite different from the bewilderment of the basic ignorance of the first skandha. In animal ignorance you have a certain style of relating to yourself and refuse to see that style from other points of view.

You completely ignore such possibilities. If somebody attacks you or challenges your clumsiness, your unskilled way of handling a situation, you find a way of justifying yourself, find rational to keep your self-respect. You are not concerned with being truthful as long as your deception can be maintained in front of others. You are proud that you are clever enough to lie successfully. If you are attacked, challenged, criticised, you automatically find an answer. Such stupidity can be very clever. It is ignorance or stupidity in the sense that you do not see the environment around you, but you see only your goal and only the means to achieve that goal, and you invent all kinds of excuses to prove that you are doing the right thing.

The animal mentality is extremely stubborn, but this stubbornness can be sophisticated as well, and quite skilful and ingenious, but without a sense of humour. The ultimate sense of humour is a free way of relating with life situations in their full absurdity. IT is seeing things clearly, including self deception, without blinkers, without barriers, without excuses.

It is being open and seeing with panoramic vision rather than trying to relieve tension. As long as humour is used as a way to relieve tension or self-consciousness or pressure, then it is humour of the animal realm, which is actually extremely serious. It is a way of looking for a crutch. So the essence of the animal style is to try to fulfil your desire with extreme honesty, sincerity and seriousness.

Traditionally, this direct and mean way of relating with the world is symbolised by the pig. The pig does not look to the left or right but just sniffs along, consuming whatever comes in front of their nose; it goes on and on and on, without an sense of discrimination – a very sincere pig.

Whether we are dealing with simple domestic tasks or highly sophisticated intellectual projects, we can have an animal style. It does not matter whether the pig eats expensive sweets or garbage. What is important is how he eats. The extreme animal mentality is trapped in the continual, self-contained, self-justifying ground of activity.

You are not able to relate with the messages given to you by your environment. You do not see yourself mirrored by others. You may be dealing with very intellectual matters, but the style is animal since there is no sense of humour, no way of surrendering or opening. There is a constant demand to move on from one thing to the next, regardless of failure or obstacles.

It is like being a tank that rolls along, crushing everything in its path. It does not matter if you run over people or crash through buildings – you just roll along.

GAMES PEOPLE PLAY

I found a couple of songs by Joe South that describe the games we play and the lack of empathy in which we engage. The funny thing is that if we listened to the words, we would understand the Buddha’s teachings…and Christ’s!
Teachings are all around us.

Games People Play

Every night and every day now
Never meaning what they say now
Never saying what they mean

And they wile away the hours
In their ivory towers
Till they’re covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine

[Chorus:]
La-da da da da da da da
La-da da da da da de
Talking ’bout you and me
And the games people play

Oh we make one another cry
Break a heart then we say goodbye
Cross our hearts and we hope to die
That the other was to blame

Neither one will give in
So we gaze at our eight by ten
Thinking ’bout the things that might have been
It’s a dirty rotten shame

[Chorus]

People walking up to you
Singing glory hallelulia
And they’re tryin to sock it to you
In the name of the Lord
They’re gonna teach you how to meditate
Read your horoscope, cheat your faith
And further more to hell with hate
Come on and get on board

[Chorus]

Look around tell me what you see
What’s happening to you and me
God grant me the serenity
To remember who I am

Cause you’ve given up your sanity
For your pride and your vanity
Turns you sad on humanity
And you don’t give a da da da da da

Walk a Mile in My Shoes

Joe South and The Believers
Written by Joe South

If I could be you and you could be me for just one hour
If we could find a way to get inside each other’s mind
If you could see you through my eyes instead of your ego
I believe you’d be surprised to see that you’d been blind

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

Well, your whole world you see around you is just a reflection
And the law of common says you’re gonna reap just what you sow

So unless you’ve lived a life of total perfection
Mm-mm, you’d better be careful of every stone that you should throw

Yet we spend the day throwin’ stones at one another
’cause I don’t think or wear my hair same way you do
Well, I may be common people but I’m your brother
And when you strike out and try to hurt me it’s a ‘hurtin you,

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes

There are people on reservations and out in the ghettos
And brother, there, but for the grace of God, go you and I

If I only had the wings of little angels don’tcha you know I’d fly
To the top of the mountain and then I’d cry?

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Better walk a mile in my shoes

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Oh, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes,

Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes.

*DHARMA* AND DHARMA

*Dharma* and dharma.

The Dharma is the teachings of the Buddha.

There is a difference between *Dharma* practitioners and Dharma practitioners –  and it’s a very delicate matter. There is theory, and there is experience. Some western Buddhists think of themselves as Dharma practitioners rather than Buddhists: they see Buddhists as vegetarian, tai-chi practising, incense sniffing wannabes! I’ve heard the term ‘Californian spirituality’ being used to describe this group, and this is not the Dharma.

*Dharma* practitioners know the six of this, and the five of that – they know the names of every thing. On forums and retreats, you will see them discussing/arguing about unimaginably precise terminology. Basically, they are into the bells and whistles of the Dharma theatre, and this is not the Dharma.

I attend two retreats a year, and this the state of play. If I talk to any Dharma student about a concern I may have, they begin to feel uncomfortable, and quickly reel off a piece of learned doctrine in response. This also is not Dharma. Dharma isn’t prayers, pujas, chanting, or reading about the nature of mind (although this discipline is beneficial).

Dharma is about what is happening in the mind at this very moment, recognising it, and dropping any elaborations. This is ‘ordinary’ inner peace, but it does not stop there. If it does stops there, we are holding onto it and it becomes *Dharma*. We have to let go.

Once the nature of mind is known, compassion naturally arises. *Dharma* practitioners have compassion for all sentient beings: Dharma practitioners’ compassion includes the person actually in front of them! It is not ‘my’ compassion: it’s just compassion. Dealing with others in an ‘ordinary’ way is of utmost importance, and does not entail a prerequisite that they conform to our standards.

That is love. Love is caring about others more than we care for ourselves. Giving others time and space to express their concerns in life is dharma activity. This is real teaching! To ignore this is a lack of compassion.

A lama once told me, “You do not have to be educated to ‘know’ the Dharma. Knowing the nature of mind is very simple.”  Thank goodness !

You don’t have to be Buddhist to care. It is just one method.

WAR IS UNNATURAL

War is unnatural.

It is an invention of politics,

and does not care who wins or loses.

Naturally, the common people don’t want war. Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor America. Nor for that matter, Germany. That is understood. But people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to danger.

It works the same in any country.”

-Herman Goering, during the Nuremberg trials.

This is from Veterans News Now.

‘Suicides Outpace War Deaths. The VA’s 2012 Suicide Data Report said about 22 vets commit suicide daily. The VA’s own suicide hotline averages 10,000 calls a month.

Epidemic post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) levels affect hundreds of thousands of combat forces and vets. The VA estimates over 30% of Vietnam vets, around 10% of Gulf War forces, and up to 20% of America’s Afghanistan and Iraq troops have PTSD.

War’s toll is one of the most underreported stories. Hundreds of thousands of combat vets won’t ever be the same again. They come home sick. They stay that way. They’re traumatized. They’re unable to cope.’

Since 2000, nearly a million vets were diagnosed with one or more mental health problems. The VA admits its data understate. Its own suicide hotline averages 10,000 calls a month.

WHAT DO YOU TRUST?

What do you trust?

The usual reply is, “I trust myself!”

If we look closely, that actually says, “I…trust…myself!”

Is that wise?”

Which of these two is doing the trusting?

Which one is you?

There is awareness, and that of which awareness of awareness.

Which is the more stable?

Mind how you go!

THE BUDDHA AND MENTAL HEALTH

The Buddha and mental health..

The Buddha’s teachings are all about dealing with mental illness – with a disturbed mind. Here are some statistics FROM THE MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION.

The facts and figures around Mental Health in the UK are alarming.

1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year

Mixed anxiety and depression is the most common mental disorder in Britain

Women are more likely to have been treated for a mental health problem than men

About 10% of children have a mental health problemat any one time

Depression affects 1 in 5 older people

Suicides rates show that British men are three times as likely to die by suicide than British women

Self-harm statistics for the UK show one of the highest rates in Europe: 400 per 100,000 population

Only 1 in 10 prisoners has no mental disorder

This is a description of our modern world! To find out the causes, study the Buddha’s teachings.

ARE YOU ALONE?

Are you alone?

Are we awake, or still living in a dream? Upon being asked that question, we will assume we are awake! We may even awake at that moment, but quickly fall into the dream again. Being awake is knowing we are in a dream! The dreams are the concepts we have to live through, created by our karma. So being aware of this, we awaken a little…thank goodness…

This could be experienced as just feeling ‘uncomfortable’ in life. We find ourselves not believing in it as much as others seem to do.

Is there anyone around you who is awake? Is there ‘light’ in their eyes, or are their minds still thinking “It’s all about me”? Many claim to be awake because of what they have read or heard, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are awake. They don’t feel uncomfortable enough yet! Do people around you merely talk about themselves, other people or events? Are they only concerned with family life, social life or work life… and not life itself?

Of course, this is what we have become used to, and so it seems normal, until we realise that these conversations never stop. I always assumed that people go somewhere else to talk of weighty matters…but they don’t! This planet has become one huge sophisticated ”Disney Plan”.

If you have no one to talk to about this, it could become very depressing. I should know! We need good company, or a good connection to a spiritual method. We all have a unique path out of the “Disney Plan”: the  path is our own unique confusion that disguises our true nature – natural clarity.

Life is too precious to waste. Our journey brought us here. Listen to your intuition, and be aware of the interventions of the mind. We are here to realise our true nature, and not muck around with the mud!

It is only when we notice the mud (concepts) that we might wonder what is underneath it.

DEALING WITH NEGATIVE PEOPLE

Dealing with negative people.

Empathetic skills come from experiencing personal suffering, and then one knows how someone else is feeling. So suffering is of value – it can benefit others when relating to them.

Dealing with other’s negativity will depend on one’s capacity, and one how realistic one is. It is possible that one could end up exhausted and depressed.

My teacher says, “After dealing with negative people, take a shower”  (maybe this has to do with dorgone energy – negative/dead energy, as opposed to orgone energy – positive energy, or chi/prana)

We can have empathy for negative people, and compassion for happy people! So-called ‘happy people’ are merely in a temporary place. The Buddha said, “not too tight and not too loose.”

We, like everyone else, can get stuck for a while in a negative space. Of course, being happy and positive is preferable, and we hope it will last forever. However, that creates expectations, which can lead to disappointment and frustrations…which leads back to negativity…

Stuff” happens in life. Some days are smooth, some days are rough. Some days we feel very spiritual, whereas somedays we just cannot be bothered. These are merely karmic occurrences and reactions.

Know that which is aware of all this coming and going, and which never changes: this is pure essence. There is nothing beyond empty essence.

The truth is actually very simple. The problem is…it is too simple, and so it goes unnoticed.

Viewing the emotion correctly, we can live a fruitful life. The tools we need are:

Intense intelligence.

Intense compassion.

Intense emotions.

HOW TO SUFFER AND BE HAPPY

How to suffer and be happy.

 Suffering does not last.

*Unconditional happiness does.

(OK, but it doesn’t seem that way!)

The condition of living in this body and mind (software on a hardrive) – in this avatar – is constant suffering. It’s a full time job: finding food for it, cleaning it, producing another avatar for another being with a ‘friend’, finding food for it and cleaning it. Most of our time is spent worrying!

It’s only when this body get old, sick and dies that we are free of all those chores…or not! Because of our habitual tendencies (our karmic load), we will go through this all again, in another body – which may even not be human. The point is, we just have to accept this fact: in having a physical body, together with this loaded mind…suffering is unavoidable!

The good news is that ‘we’ are not this body, or this ‘software’. We do not have to suffer. We cannot suffer, never have suffered, and never will suffer. When we realise we are pure awareness in a body and mind, then everything changes, we also realise that our true nature is unconditionally happy – beyond the conditions of this physical body and mind.

We are genuinely pure, luminous beings stuck in a body, because of our habitual way of looking our selves and the universe. We have got so used to this that we do not know – or have forgotten – what we truly are.

Well, we just have to act as if we do recognise what we truly are…fake it! This gets us ‘acting’ in a different way, knowing that our true nature is happiness, and that no outside force can effect it or hurt us. Just try it! Most important of all -stop worrying!

It is the ideas we hold about ourselves and the universe around us that make us unhappy. The world is not perfect – but then again, it is perfect. Our combined ignorance has let the world deteriorate to the state it is in today, and this is why, in order to change the world, we have to change the way we see things.

This change will take a long time to come about as a collective, as we are in the Kuli Yuga (the age of strife). However, if we can change our view at any time…pass it on!

Letting go of our fixate point of view is simple…but not easy! This is why we need good company.

*Unconditional happiness means a happiness that does not rely on mental or physical conditions.

BEING OVER POSITIVE

Being over positive.

Treading the spiritual path, isn’t all flowers and “namastes”.

Being over-positive can be stressful, covering up reality warts and all, this can turn life into something which it is not. It is misleading, as it is trying to make what is perfect, more perfect. It also becomes a weight around our neck. It makes claims which are beyond people’s reach, creating hope and fear.

This is a very subtle business. There is negativity and there is positivity: they are both fine and useful. But when we get into negative negativity and positive positivity we run into trouble.

Negative negativity is justifying a mistaken view, the illusion just turned into delusion.

Positive positivity is justifying a positive view, the illusion just returned into delusion…again!

In ancient Sanskrit text, there are three aspects to our sentient being described as the three Gunas: Tamas, Rajas and Sattva. Tamas is a sleepy state. Rajas is an active state and Sattva is an peaceful state. They are called the three thieves!

Tamas represents dullness. Rajas represents excitement. Sattva represents stillness. It’s easy to see that the first two are thieves to our being, but it is not so easy to see in the third – Sattva. It is the clinging to Sattva that takes us down to the other two states. They are useful energies, but can catch us out, creating little demons! Aren’t spiritual people who act spiritual a little annoying?

This is what meditation is all about – constantly letting go. Depending on our temperament, the negative or positive aspects of our nature can be used. We can use aversion as the path. We can use desire as the path. We can actually use ignorance as the path.

Ignorance is interesting. Ignorance means indifference, don’t care, spaced out. Lacking spaciousness. But that can be turned into a spacious, carefree quality.

We can all work in different ways, and we have to be honest. If the life we lead was perfectly perfect, we would want to transcend this pretty prison. Be grateful for the obstacles on the path, they keep us going!

CUTTING THROUGH SPIRITUAL MATERIALISM

CUTTING THROUGH SPIRITUAL MATERIALISM.

Chogyam Trungpa.

To the conventional way of thinking, compassion simply means being kind and warm. This sort of compassion is described as ‘grandmother’s’ love. You would expect the practitioner of this type of compassion to be extremely kind and gentle; he would not harm a flea.

If you need another mask, another blanket to warm yourself, he will provide it. But true compassion is ruthless, from the ego’s point of view, because it does not consider ego’s drive to maintain itself.

It is “crazy wisdom.” It is totally wise, but it is crazy as well, because it does not relate to ego’s literal and simple-minded attempts to secure its own comfort.

The logical voice of ego advises us to be kind to other people, to be good boys and girls and lead innocent little lives. We work at our regular jobs and rent a cozy room or apartment for ourselves; we would like to continue in this way, but suddenly something happens which tears us out of our secure little nest.

Either we become extremely depressed or something outrageously painful occurs. We begin to wonder why heaven has been so unkind. “Why should God punish me? I have been a good person,

I have never hurt a soul.” But there is something more to life than that.

What are we trying to secure? Why are we so concerned to protect ourselves? The sudden energy of ruthless compassion severs us from our comfort and securities. If we were never to experience this kind of shock, we would not be able to grow. We have to be jarred out of our regular, repetitive and comfortable lifestyle.

The point of meditation is not merely to be an honest or good person in the conventional sense, trying only to maintain our security. We must begin to become compassionate and wise in a fundamental sense, open and relating to the world as it is.

SORTING YOURSELF OUT

Sorting Your Self Out

There six psychological neurotic realms that we live in as sentient being. During a day we may pass in and out of them without noticing. We may also find that we get stuck in one for a lifetime.

Let’s use ‘acquiring knowledge’ as an example. This may reveal what type of person we are.

Hell realms: It’s never right

Hungry ghosts: Want it desperately but cannot digest it.

Animal realm: They acquire it and store it, but never look at it.

Human realm: They indulge in it, but get frustrated because it never quite satisfies.

Jealous gods: They collect it and use it as a weapon.

Gods: They have knowledge and enjoy it, but cannot keep it.

Not to worry, as always there are the opposite qualities:

God/Animal.. =ignorance…= all encompassing space

Hell…………….=anger……….= mirror-like wisdom

Hungry ghost.= pride………= wisdom of equanimity

Human………..= passion…..=discriminating wisdom

Jealous god….=envy……….=all accomplish wisdom

The point is if we can identify someone’s patterning, we can understand where they are coming from…and why, you cannot get on! So sometimes, silence is golden!

FOUR TYPES OF ‘I’

Buddhist science takes everything apart to reveal what is left…nothing!

Buddhism talks about 4 types of ‘I’, (there could be more):

The social ‘I ‘, the self-cherishing ‘I’, the reified ‘I’ and the ‘I’mere ‘I’. Normally we lump it all together, and say I.

The social ‘I’ is created from the reaction of those around us, and we tend to feel we have to live up to that image. Our idea of who we are is built upon the reactions of those around us.

The self-cherishing ‘I’ is self evident – it’s all about me! We relate everything to ourselves, which is when we start to get upset.

The reified ‘I’ (reified means to make real, or solid). This ‘I’ makes ourselves and everything around us seem real and solid, this fixes us and that creates a lot of problems.

The mere ‘I’. In meditation we allow a ‘I’ mere to be present. This mere ‘I’ is a stepping stone of the 8th consciousness to the experience of emptiness where no ‘I’ is present – pure awareness. This merely entails awareness being aware of this mere ‘I’. But we can stay with this mere ‘I’- barely aware, as this is a very useful in practice.

There is another purpose for a mere ‘I’. The experience of emptiness is dry, there is no engagement in life, it is pure reflection. So we come down a little to “expression emptiness” or “essence love”, this is where the juice flows, and we work with a mere ‘I’ in daily life.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE THEORIES OF EVOLUTION

The problem with the theories of evolution.

There are two arguments: the first is that we ascended from Apes, while the second is that we are a creation of God. Oh, and there’s a third – we came from Alien god beings. All wrong of course (laughing)!

The problem comes when we assume that ‘we’ are only this body. If we assume that we are this body, and only have this one lifetime, then life is a matter of playing a very small part between our ancestors and prodigy. So there is not much time for us as individuals to evolve, is there? Especially when we consider that most people spend their lives looking for entertainment, or working to improve their status in life. Now those don’t sound much like evolution, do they?

If we can see, or reason, or try to accept that we are not this body, but embodied beings that reincarnate, then the possibilities are endless. That too could be a problem (still laughing)…!

So, we are created by God. If so, why do most people look for entertainment, or work to improve their status in life? Is that what God wanted? Or have we got the story wrong? There is something here, but it is to do with, “I am it whom I seek” More on this God thing later.

So, we came from Aliens. This does not add up at all. If we have had many incarnations (an infinite number), we are beings that have been aliens, apes, goats, gods…anything that is sentient! We are all aliens, and not necessarily coming from Earth. Buddhist believe that every sentient being has been our mother at some time.

Evolution is about much, much more: it is about evolving from sentient being to enlightenment – Buddhahood. Awake and having exhausted all karmic imprints. This means knowing our true being, having destroyed any trace of mental fixations.

Now that’s what I call evolving (still laughing)…!

THE BUDDHA, DEMONS AND AGENDA 21

The Buddha, Demons and Agenda 21.

Agenda 21 is a charter created in 1992 by the UN for sustainable development of the planet: this means killing 6 billion people ( read about the “Georgia Guide Stones” in Atlanta USA) or total control of everyone. Those engaged in Agenda 21 have many subtle ways to do this, and have been experimenting for years with social engineering. You will have to verify this information for yourself. We only have to look at the modern world to see the trouble we are in – in all walks of life – but, like most people, we ignore what we see. This is due to a dulling of our minds.

Basically, there are organisations who want the planet for themselves (and believe me, I know how idiotic and frightening this sounds). These people have been planning this for a very, very long time, so it will go unnoticed. Look at the data that has escaped into the public domain: Agenda 21 does not mind you knowing because their plans are well under way.

So where does Buddhism come into all this?

Strange to say, this actually enhances our practice. In the Age of Strife, the Dharma works better!

The Dharma teaches us that there are enlightened being constantly blessing us to wake up. And as opposite forces in the universe exist, there are endarkened beings called Mara (demons) that do not wish us to wake up.

Our Emotions are the key to whether this negative Agenda 21 works – or not! If we are controlled by our emotions – by liking and disliking – our awareness as to what is happening can, and will be distracted. Demons can only work if we allow our minds to be confused. That is how ‘they’ make Agenda 21 work…they know the principles of the Dharma! Put it this way: our ignorance is not all our fault.

Endarkened beings feed on our negativity, and it is our own likes and dislikes that attract them. That is the law of attraction. The choice of whom we attract is always in our own hands.

Endarkened beings are attracted to these organisations, and are feeding off them in a big way.

Endarkened beings do not understand Emptiness…they can get nothing out of it! That is precisely the path to liberation.

All you have to do is look, recognise and drop the emotions. Then fear has no hold on you.

COMPASSION IN ACTION

Compassion in action.

Compassion is a tricky subject. We start by being kind to ourselves…”There I go again! But at least I learned something.” We all assume that we are compassionate – until the moment our button gets pressed, and then off we go…that steaming-snorting-smelly-self-righteous monster appears again!

When this happens, an unshakeable confidence arises – together with a sense of relief and joy: this is compassion and we can now face anything.

When this three-fold nature of Pure Cognisant Compassion looks out, it recognises sentient beings’ true potential as having Pure Cognisant Compassion…they simply do not recognise it.

The most important point is that when a situation arises, and one is about to get angry (or any of the other emotions arise), it is an opportunity to see one’s own state and be honest. In not reacting, space is created and compassion can take place…sometimes, silence is golden!

There are also the enlightened, compassionate activities of pacifying, magnetising, enriching and destroying, but in these there can be no ego present, otherwise it will backfire.

Compassion in action comes from the fearless dignity of knowing one’s true nature, and that of others.

No outside force can ever disturb this!

Spirituality is tough on ego. Tough? Its job is to destroy ego’s game.

SPIRITUAL CENTRES

Spiritual centres – what to be aware of.

Spiritual centres have two aspects, the meaning of the teaching and…people! The meaning of the teachings is what we go for… the people can be a problem. However, people can work as a catalyst for the real meaning of the teachings.

What one may encounter in spiritual centres is the enthusiasm for putting one’s hand together, follow rituals and acquiring an exotic vocabulary. You may find something missing – compassion. There is compassion, but it’s generally for those who dwell afar – not in the same room!

The law of desire, aversion and indifference work just as well in a meditation room as well as in the outside world. There are people we lean towards, there are people we keep away from and there are people we ignore. If we can appreciate this we will do fine.

We have to fit into a spiritual centre with all its uncomfortable dynamics. The constant thought arises “Do I have to be like them?” No, you don’t. One learns to listen, nod and smile…and move on!

How do you feel about this?

A PERSONAL VIEW

A PERSONAL VIEW.

I love the topic of the two truths -what is real and what seems real. The Buddha said it all, and so have many others. There is no difference between them and us, except that they have realise the truth.

However, I do have a personal problem, which has caused me to get kicked out of Dharma centres. It’s the dynamics of spiritual set-ups, and the politics surrounding the teacher. The teacher needs the students, as much as the students need the teacher. So an artificiality of does and don’ts gets established, based on formerly held religious ideas, and there is thus a pressure to conform.

At the beginning of our search, we honestly want to find what is true and real, but very quickly we learn how to be pretenders. This is due us merely adhering to the status quo that has been set up: it sometimes feels like neuro-linguistic programming. We start off with “Beginner’s mind, Zen mind”… and then we learn all those fancy words, and sit on fancy cushions, in front of a very fancy shrine. A new life style has just begun – Chogyam Trungpa called this “Spiritual materialism”.

People start acting in a very ‘special’ way, which is quite unnatural.

It’s the wooden stage in our evolution. In the west we are clinging to another’s culture and ignoring our own. The ancient world has wisdom, while the modern world has energy, and they can work well together. The West has to learn to stand on its own two feet.

I once spoke to a Lama, who admitted that one cannot be honest with people…they are still too delicate.

My personal concern is, “Who was the last person to be enlightened?” I trust it is possible, as I’ve seen changes within my own mind, but I do wonder if we have to let go of letting go. This is why we need to engage in personal research, and not merely copy others.

It is possible that the answer is in devotion, and receiving blessings. I’ll let you know when I find out!

Please be yourself, and don’t copy others…you don’t know where they’ve been, or what they may have trodden in!

FREEDOM

Freedom.

We all want freedom, but from what?

Anything that happens ‘out there’ is only recognised ‘in here’ – the mind. In formation is received by the senses, goes to the brain and is seen in the mind…and noted by Empty Awareness.

Freedom is ‘being’ liberated from ‘being’ stuck in the mind, by thoughts and those emotions. The emotions are the reaction to those thoughts. It is the emotions that are the active part of keeping us is a VIRTUAL PRISON.

If the ‘outside’ world can keep our emotions ticking over, we stay trapped.

Freedom is not reacting to the emotionS, but using them as a tool to recognise our true nature:

Empty Essence

Cognisant nature

Unconfined Compassion

PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT

Practise makes perfect.

Although we read and hear word, it is only in practise that anything is understood. The meaning is beyond the words. The words are necessary, but the real meaning is in experience. Conceptual understanding can convince the mind, but essence is pure experience.

When the words say, be aware of awareness, actually sit quietly and become aware of awareness. The chattering mind may still be present, but we can still be aware of the awareness being aware of the chattering!

If you have got that far you are doing well!!!

The next step is merely to be aware that in the awareness nothing can be found…because that is Emptiness. You have arrived… gone, gone, gone beyond.

Now comes the hard work…continuity! Continuity is allowing Empty Essence to be present throughout the day and night. This basically means not reacting, and remaining in spacious awareness. Not reacting stops karma being created. This does not means we do nothing, we just do not preform out of habit.

When all karma is exhausted and we continuously rest in Empty essence…I suppose that is enlightenment….well done! Truly gone, gone, gone beyond.

Of course between now and then we will meet a few obstacles – they are merely opportunities to transcend this vicious cycle of existence. And that’s where working with the emotions comes in handy.

All the best,

Tony

KNOWING, KNOWING KNOWING

Knowing
Without knowing we wouldn’t know.
Knowing allows everything to be known.
We couldn’t ‘be’ without it!

Knowing knowing
Appreciating knowing
is the next step back.
Awareness of knowing.

Knowing, knowing knowing
Is the final stage.
It is the nature of pure knowing.
Untainted.

THERE IS NOTHING TO BURN

There is nothing to burn.

The demon knows the I inflames.

We ignore what we know.

Dropping our wind,

reveals pure empty essence.

There is nothing to burn.

REPETITION

To talk of truth is worthwhile repeating,

until it is recognised in reality.

Anything else is not worth repeating,

but we do it all the same.

STILL CLINGING TO AN IMPERMANENT REALITY?

Still clinging to likes and dislikes?

We naturally gravitate towards some things, and away from others. We may like tomatoes on toast and not smelly people. But if that tomatoes on toast were someone’s only food, and that smelly person had just lost the love of their life, everything changes. The person is still smelly, and the tomatoes on toast are still tasty, but its not the same, is it?

So everything is impermanent, yet at the same time there is a beauty in that impermanence. A flower is beautiful precisely because it is impermanent, more so than a plastic flower. Like and dislike is how we cope with life, on a conventional relative level.

It’s the clinging that causes the trouble. Clinging can limit everything for this lifetime…and beyond.

That is why we are born with an attitude, it reveals itself as we grow. This clinging creates a personality with an attitude. Clinging turns like and dislike into the addiction of uncontrollable desire and hatred. Then uncontrolled emotions turns into uncontrolled actions.

From an absolute view point there is no like and dislike, everything just is. It is just smell – or one taste. This is what appears before judgment.

If we can see things from an absolute and a relative point of view at the same time, we will not be so quick to react. Plus, one intelligence will have just increased. That’s our emotional intelligence EQ!

Three poisons

Desire, Aversion and Ignorance.

Desire and Aversion have a cause-

Ignorance.

Ignorance is clinging to an impermanent reality.

INTERESTING IS BORING, AND BORING IS INTERESTING

Interesting is boring, boring is interesting.

A spiritual teacher, took his students to a Japanese tea drinking ceremony. Afterwards the students, said how wonderful it was. How the experience was so up lifting, so enriching, such an interesting ritual, and went home loaded down with trinkets.

They had missed to point. They were just there to drink tea. Just sit.

We tend to over elaborate, and miss the essence of the moment. We want something more interesting, and of course this becomes just another addictive insatiable pass time we have written into our script!

What is seen as boring holds the nature of originality – the origin – essence. Which can be manifested or not.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with grumpiness, depression or being dissatisfied. Because things no longer satisfies, does not mean we or those around us are wrong. It’s just time to move on, otherwise we may find our self arguing and feeling guilty. We will probably get kicked out anyway! I should know.

This is the process:

On every rung of the ladder, the same words are used but the meaning is different, more profound.

At every rung perception changes. There comes a moment when things no longer feel right, but maybe you cannot explain it or feel free to express it.

Let’s take the negative emotions.

1.  On the first level, the emotions are said to be bad. So one does not allow them in. “Do not get angry”. This is good, but the anger still arises. You may even be told to stay away from negative people. So you practise even harder, and the anger still arises. And you feel guilty. “Do not feel guilty,” they say. “Ok, I will try harder.” It gets tiring, and you tie yourself in knots. This approach is good, for some.

2.  On the next level, you can apply an antidote to the negative emotions. For anger, apply compassion, for pride apply equality and so on. This is good, this works. But it is still a only a temporary fix. The emotions still arise. So you try harder. You work so hard you now protected yourself from all angles. You are truly skilful. Alas pride and complacency wells up. This is difficult to let go of.

3.  On the next level, the emotions can now be transformed into wisdoms. They can be used. Anger becomes mirror-like wisdom, Desire becomes discriminating wisdom, Jealousy becomes all-accomplishing wisdom, Pride becomes wisdom of equality and Ignorance becomes wisdom of spaciousness. ( Take pride. You feel better than others, this feeling just arises. it’s ok! Now you see that everyone else can also have those skills. Take jealousy. You feel others are better than you, it’s ok! Now you see that you too can have those qualities. Even more importantly, the very moment you see good qualities in others, they are in you. How else could you recognise them! And so on..)

4.  On the next level, it is realised that the negative emotions never existed in the first place. It’s like a thief entering an empty house.

This is how we change. So we can start to see that the interest in trivial pursuits, is just a distraction, to the real job in hand.

The quote about being original, and looking to the origin came from Leonardo da Vinci. He was really boring!!!

It’s all there waiting for you – “Tears of unshakable boring joy.”

SOAP AND WATER

We have to find a suitable soap (method) to wash away our conceptual mud. Once the mud is off, we have to wash off the soap (method) as well. The soap (method) reveals our true qualities: once revealed we no longer need the soap (method).

The problem nowadays is that we say, “Well, I don’t need the soap (method) because I have no need to wash!” Thinking this, the mud of anger, pride, fear, jealousy and hatred still remain.

Why do we still suffer?

It does not matter how much we have read, think or do – if we still identify with the body and mind…we will suffer. We blame external events, when experience actually takes place in the mind.

We are embodied beings, confused about our true status. We have short memories, and still believe this body and mind is us.

The test is simple.

How much are we controlled by our emotions? By fear, pride, jealousy, anger and hatred? Do we protect ourselves and subtly attack others? How much inner peace do we have? Do we continue to value ourselves more than others?

Simply put, we suffer because we still hang onto our precious imaginary selves.

We are much more than this. We are truly precious. We are the Jewel in the conceptual Mud!

When we can use suffering as an indicator of our self-cherishing, we can then begin to wash off the ‘conceptual mud comforter.’

We all want freedom, but how much are we willing to let go of…to be free?

Of course, we have to wash the mud off with soap (practice). Then we have to wash the soap off!
