NOT SEEING THE FOREST FOR THE TREES

Not Seeing The Forest For The Trees

Not realising the truth of consciousness
for the words about consciousness.

This idiom describes losing sight of the big picture because we’re bogged down by minor details. Once we see the big picture, insight dawns.

Just as thousands of individual trees obscure the vastness of the forest, the constant chatter of the mind obscures the underlying field of consciousness.

The trees are our daily thoughts, anxieties, memories and sensory inputs. They are loud and fast-moving, and demand our immediate attention.

The forest is the silent, expansive space of awareness in which those thoughts arise.
When we over-identify with every passing thought, we forget that we are the sky, not the weather.

To see the forest, we must step back from the individual trees.

To experience the truth of pure awareness,
we must step back from the noise of words and thoughts.

Zooming out is meditation.
