MYSTICISM

Mysticism

Mysticism: Transcending ordinary human understanding. A sense of spiritual mystery, awe, and fascination concerned with spirit, rather than with material things.

Whether mysticism is a mystery or not
depends on our understanding

When we wake up from our idealistic dream
to our reality of pure consciousness,
life – the mystery – is no longer a mystery.

WHY WE DON’T PERCEIVE REALITY

Why We Don’t Perceive Reality

Reality – which is pure consciousness – has been sidetracked due to education, society and the media to see through a veil of concepts-restrictions. Concepts alter our pure perception. As long as we go along with the state of collective social understanding, we will think exactly the same way as others, and repeat the same everlasting conversations.

This is living in a disguised dictatorship where we have the freedom to choose between ‘this’ or ‘that’ from a pre-written menu.

We learn to love and take pride in our menu.
Menu: from Latin, minutus, ‘very small’.

WHAT ARE WE PROUD OF?

What Are We Proud Of?

We’re proud of our menu of ideas.
Menu: from Latin, minutus, ‘very small’.

Pride is our personal dungeon of existence.
What are we trying to impress?

Others’ menus.

TERMINOLOGY OBSCURES EXPERIENCE

Terminology Obscures Experience

We become proud of the words we use and that, in itself, is our problem.

We should choose words carefully. Terms such as ‘suffering’, ‘clinging’, ‘grasping’, can suggest something extreme, when the experience and cause is much subtler. The same goes for ‘compassion’; it’s just a word unless we are at one – empathetic – with whatever appears, without sentimentalit or judgement.

Our problem is that our attachment to words becomes worship.
Terminology binds us to our group.

When we are one with whatever appears, all is new and fresh,
before the words and feelings become a projection,
and an exaggeration.

WE ARE BOUND BY WORDS

We Are Bound By Words

We are bound or restricted by words,
limiting the thoughts, feelings and actions,
which separate us.

An genuine smile and a genuine ear unite us,
and we are not doing or saying anything.

Unity is effortless.

EMPTINESS IS THE ULTIMATE IN SOPHISTICATION

Emptiness Is The Ultimate In Sophistication

Emptiness is the ultimate in sophistication.
There is nothing more sophisticated than pure awareness.

Like infinite space, it contains everything.
The essence of mind is total openness,
without exaggerations.

THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG ISN’T THERE?

There’s Something Wrong, Isn’t There?

There’s something wrong, isn’t there?
Or are things going right?

It all depends on one’s point of view.

If we are evil, things are going right.
And if we understand about cause and effect,
things are going right.

Things are only going wrong when we live in hope.

BUDDHISM ISN’T ANTI-LIFE

Buddhism Isn’t Anti-Life

Buddhism is living life to the full,
experiencing everything that comes our way as our teacher.

Life teaches us something when perception is fully open. Buddhism isn’t about suffering; it is the path to alleviatesuffering, dissatisfaction, conflict, confusion …

It is happiness beyond reason
– or it should be.

HAVE YOU EVER MET ANYONE …

Have You Ever Met Anyone …

Have you ever met anyone you can truly talk to?

People talk about anything but actual reality.
To truly talk, we have to step outside the cycle of speculation.

Gaining confidence is expanding our horizon – our view.
Our pure view is pure consciousness.

IT’S ALL A COVER-UP

It’s All A Cover-Up

It’s all a cover-up.
“What is?”
Our true reality.

We live in a make-believe world,
where truth is rarely spoken.

We may talk about a cover-up,
but do we know what the cover-up is covering up?

As long as we see through a filter of beliefs,
we will never know our true reality.

MY TURNING POINT

My Turning Point

My turning point was when I realised
that the Dharma is within,
and isn’t reliant on anything or anyone external.

The Buddha was right.

The external is a starting point to realising
that corruption and the path are the same thing.

THE VICIOUS CYCLE OF EXISTENCE?

The Vicious Cycle Of Existence?

The vicious cycle of existence … really?

The phrase ‘the vicious cycle of existence’ is an idiom that is trotted out all the time among Buddhists. Do you ever wonder why we say things – or rather repeat things – that sound right, and then think … “Hang on a minute!? I don’t see it as a vicious cycle of existence but rather, a confused cycle of existence.”?

There are many things we hear and just accept, when they were actually written by a translator who saw it to their level of understanding – in this case using the archaic use of the word ‘vicious’ which means ‘imperfect or defective’. In contemporary English, however, ‘vicious’ is defined as ‘deliberately cruel or violent’, and that makes no sense to the modern ear in this context.

We have to see things in the way we experience and understand, and go from there – and so you have every right to disagree with my conclusions. 🙂

It’s a process of refining personal understanding, as there isn’t one answer to suit all. This is why the Buddha saw the Vedanta in a new light, and why he said, “Do not take my words for the truth; test them for yourself.”

REFLECTIONS

Reflections

Inner reflection is like being given advice, not from an external source, but from the mind itself. We are assailed by both pleasant and unpleasant experiences but, in the first instant before we designate the occurrence as nice or not, it’s just experience. However, an impression – a residue – remains.

Although the mind is usually confused because it dwells on the past and ignores what’s happening right now in front of us, it’s telling us much. In fact, its reaction to both pleasant and unpleasant events (karma) is beneficial if seen in the right light.

Our mind is full of memories, and this is what we work with, to remind us that we’re living in an illusion of past ideas that we grew up with. The purpose of meditation is to acknowledge how much thoughts carry us away.

Sharing these reflections is the reason why I write.
We can all do this.

IF WE ALL COME FROM ONE SOURCE …

If We All Come From One Source …

If we all come from one source,
what source would that be?

What qualities is this source projecting?
Are people a representation of that source?

We’re in constant conflict with one another.
Does this represent a compassionate source?

Belief in a source is belief in the magical power
to apparently influence minds and events.

Source: a point of origin.

Pure consciousness has no origin, and so it has no source,
and it has no desire to influence.
It is the corrupted mind that influences consciousness/people.

What a strange world we live in.

WE ARE CLOSER THAN WE THINK

We Are Closer Than We Think

How many people are stuck in their minds, in memories and illusions obscuring the present? This is the sad world we live in but, at the same time, it’s also enlightening because we see that it’s only memories which obscure our enlightened reality.

In dropping memories,
we are spontaneously present.

Unfortunately, we want something more ‘interesting’,
so reality stays closed.

Reality isn’t in front of us;
it’s where we are.

It couldn’t be simpler

IT TAKES A CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE TO REALISE THE TRUTH

It Takes A Contemplative Life To Realise The Truth

We cannot realise our true essence or compassion from a book or a chat.

Realisation is difficult to talk about as people usually want an immediate answer. Much depends on the quality of personal experience; it takes time to contemplate what is real, and what isn’t.

A contemplative life is beneficial to be able to realise and rest in pure awareness where life is no longer frantic, panicked, or intellectual. A contemplative life is one where everything goes at a natural pace, and we’re no longer excited by gossip, personal theories or intellectualisations – the creators of illusion.

Everything in the world is exaggerated, so there’s no time or space to truly reflect. We get lost in the acquisition of groupthink. Spiritual communities are just the start of our journey, but then we must go alone before we become caught up in conformity and cannot change – and probably don’t want to, as we feel safer in a group.

Spontaneity is a matter of trusting in the moment for inspiration; if there is none, it’s probably not needed. Everything is okay within world madness. It’s all cause and effect. We know why things happen and how, and we cannot change this – even a Buddha can’t do that.

In a contemplative life, there isn’t much talking.

The disappointing aspect of talking is that the other person has usually switched off halfway through a sentence as their mind’s gone into referral mode and they’ve stopped listening. Talking to others is like talking to a memory box. 🙂

The contemplative aspect of writing
is that people have to take time to consider whether they agree or not.
😀

CONSCIOUSNESS IS SUPERIOR TO THOUGHT

Consciousness Is Superior To Thought

We meditate to realise our true reality beyond words.
Realisation allows consciousness to sparkle.

Words about consciousness are vulgar intellectual repetitions; whether these are speculative theories or beautiful poetry, words create emotions. Words take us away from our actual reality, and we become – and remain – mere simulations. It’s what evil manufactures daily.

This simulation is only observed by
… consciousness. 🙂

Vulgar: Latin vulgaris, from vulgus ‘common people’.

WHY ARE THINGS GOING WRONG?

Why Are Things Going Wrong?

Have you considered the fifth column(s)?
The means behind the scenes.
Whatever is happening will happen anyway; it always has.

“A fifth column is a group of people who undermine a larger group or nation from within, usually in favour of an enemy group or another nation.

“Their activities can be overt or clandestine, and can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, espionage or terrorism, while secret sympathisers can mobilise openly to assist an external attack.”

What can we do?
Recognise that this is Mara at work.
Be aware of whatever is going on in our mind, and why.

We used to say, ‘Sticks and stones can break my bones but names will never hurt me.’ Now, names seem to hurt people, but they never noticed this change in events. That is the illusion that we live in.

George Orwell wrote about this in ‘Animal Farm’, when the pigs who were in charge stated, “Two legs bad, four legs good’ which later changed to “Four legs good, two legs better.” Once people are taught to believe, they will continue to believe.

We can tell people about a fifth column,
but they won’t see it as they’re living it.

THE ESOTERIC AND THE EXOTERIC

The Esoteric And The Exoteric

Eso = within.
Exo = without

The esoteric:
No words.
Just silent experience.

The exoteric:
Words are splintered,
causing confusion and conflict.

Truth is never out there.

WE MISS THE FORMLESS

We Miss The Formless

Our essence is formless, without features.
Form comes from words and rituals.

In sticking to the form,
we ignore the formless.

Essence is silent awareness.
Its qualities are clarity and compassion.

FREE WILL

Free Will

Free will means free consciousness.

It’s not a matter of being free to choose,
as that is determined by our minds’ judgements, based on preconceived ideas.

Free will is being free of everything.

LOSING THE CONNECTION

Losing The Connection

When we lose the connection with reality,
we lose the connection with each another.

The ability to connect has nothing to do with ideas or culture.
It is knowing our commonality of pure consciousness.

Realising this connection is the birth of compassion.

WE THINK WHAT WE THINK MATTERS

We Think That What We Think Matters

We think that what we think matters.
What actually matters is realising what thinks.
🙂

The mind does not think: it’s just memories and bits of information.
The essence of mind is pure consciousness; it’s what we are.

When we stop grasping at memories,
we become what we have always been.

RELEASE FROM MADNESS

Release From Madness

The definition of madness is that it’s a mental disorder, a behavioural pattern that causes distress or impairment of personal functioning.

From this definition,
we can see the various levels at work.
That is to say,
we’re all a bit mad in someone else’s eyes.
🙂

When we’re caught up in some form of cognitive patterning – thinking, saying and doing the same things over and over again – consciousness is distracted. Evil creates distractions, so that we focus on what’s out there, rather than what is happening to our mind. A deluge of irrelevant and misleading information keeps us from focusing on what truly matters.

When we’re distracted, we’re carried away from the clarity of consciousness.
The release from madness/suffering is clarity.

We don’t have to know anything clever;
the observation of this madness is clarity itself.

WHY ARE WE OFFENDED?

Why Are We Offended?

We’re offended because we don’t know that evil takes naturally occurring events and exaggerates them. We’re controlled by our ideas – or rather, others’ ideas which we’ve acquired – that form our likes and dislikes. If others don’t validate what we like, we dislike them. This is what’s called ‘being offended’; it’s our gross human mind at work, which we think is normal.

The opposite to being offended (disliking) is being pleased (liking); these personal traits are what cause us confusion and conflict. The so-called crime of hate is merely Mara taking advantage of the ordinary human conditioning of desire and aversion – hope and fear – to ignite emotions.

Not realising that our opinions are made up from age-old media in all its forms which we think ‘entertains’ us but which actually programmes us, we bumble along from one conflict tf another.

May this stupidity be exposed for what it is – the manipulation of the mind on a global scale of being offended. I am offended at stupidity being encouraged! 🙂

We’re only offended when we hold onto a idea,
and don’t recognise
the truth of our being of pure consciousness,
which is the observation of thoughts.

Letting go is the path to enlightenment.

HAPPY, BUT STILL FEELING WRONG

Happy, But Still Feeling Wrong

Why? Most people’s happiness relies on a condition that they can talk about with others.

Being happy for no reason doesn’t rely on conditions as there’s nothing to talk about. This isn’t at all interesting to a conditioned person, and that’s when we can feel wrong.

In perfect emptiness,
may peace and peace and peace be everywhere.

QUESTIONS ARE IMPORTANT

Questions Are Important

When we seek an answer, it is we who decide what makes sense.

A question elicits information – within our own mind.
A question may be a doubt about the truth of something – within our own mind.
A question requires a resolution – within our own mind.

We are the ultimate question – “What am I?”
We are the ultimate answer – “We are that which asks the question”.

Sharing a question may help others.

THE MAIN METHOD TO REMOVE KARMA

The Main Method To Remove Karma

Listening to others
is the main method to remove karma.

This is using a diagnostic tool,
which shows us our habitual behaviour.

If we can listen without preconceived ideas,
we are being of benefit to both ourself and the speaker.

Listen and learn.
🙂

Even gurus find this difficult.

THIS CANNOT BE REPEATED ENOUGH

This Cannot Be Repeated Enough

Chasing the exotic ignores that which is already present;
this cannot be repeated enough.

Direct awareness is common to all. Anything else is merely a symbol, and we can become hung-up on symbols. Exotic customs can help remind us, but our own breath – or any of the senses – can do exactly the same thing – remind us of that which perceives.

Consciousness is common to all.
It is right here, right now.
That is where we start and end.

It is we who have to test
whether whatever appears is direct,
or is an addition.

TOLD HOW AND WHAT TO THINK

Told How And What To Think

Whatever we think is the outcome of our history which has become our culture. Then the goal posts are moved, the rules are changed, and we’re told to think differently. This causes confusion in society, and people will react.

History does repeat itself; it’s meant to. The constant creation and re-creation of confusion is the history of humanity

What was a friend is now an ‘enemy’,
and what was an enemy is now a ‘friend’.

When we don’t think for ourselves,
we’re just part of the moveable furniture.

REALISATION, OR JUST BELIEF?

Realisation, Or Just Belief?

When we think about or pray to beings in the past and believe that they’re listening to us, we give up responsibility. This is a false hope that the deity is ‘doing it’ – selectively – all for us. Although belief is very effective, and can make us do and create ‘impressive’ things that can be worshipped, and used to spread ‘the word’, it is deceptive.

Do we know exactly what we’re believing in?
Is it truth, or a disguise?

When we believe, we relinquish responsibility for our thoughts and actions, and just carry on as usual, hoping the deity will put it all right. This is a fool’s paradise, where we become dependent on an idea and lack genuine kindness.

Are we replicas of ease or dis-ease?
Replica: from Italian replicare, ‘to reply’.

I WAS A BIT OF A DUFFER

I Was A Bit Of A Duffer

When I was young, I hadn’t a clue about life, and was totally confused. So I joined spiritual groups that were even more confusing. “Am I going to end up weird like these people?” I thought.

When I gave up the words and form – the mannerisms – and stopped trying too hard, I realised that it surely can’t be that complicated 🙂

Our true reality isn’t about knowing someone else’s psychology; it’s all about knowing our own, and why we tick the way we tick. And it’s definitely not about feeling guilty for being the way we are.

Realisation isn’t a thing to put on a pedestal or throne.
It’s simply being, and eliminating the effects of acquired confusion.

MEDITATION: DON’T FOLLOW THOUGHTS

Meditation: Don’t Follow Thoughts

Note thoughts, but don’t follow them.

Thoughts will arise in meditation.
Just don’t follow them.
Let them go, to consider later.
Be aware of the breath.

This is how we train the mind not just to react to ideas, but to focus.
Be aware of the breath.
In this way, we gain clarity.

Our reality is very simple.
We are purely consciousness, and have simple needs.

WHAT OR WHOM CAN WE TRUST?

What Or Whom Can We Trust?

Whatever we decide, we’re trusting in our judgement!
Depending on our experience, that is the level of our judgement.

Ultimately, when we realise our true reality of pure consciousness,
that is where trust begins and ends.

We can trust nothing and no one out there.
That may sound harsh, but we are the sovereigns of our own mind.
We shouldn’t just follow because others are following.

This is why the Buddha said,
“Do not take my words for the truth; test them for yourself.”

We have to give up waiting for people to tell us the truth.
If we only learn others’ words, we will become arrogant.

Realisation is individual clarity.

TAKEN OVER BY A SELF

Taken Over By A Self

What is taken over?
Consciousness.

We are given a ‘uniform’ at birth, a cultural identity which is the foundation of incarceration in a self. This self has no reality; it’s just a few ideas sewn together in the mind.

Our reality is consciousness,
and ‘someone’ has turned the table* on us,
causing us to believe in a self.

Our stupidity is this simple.

*To turn the table: to reverse a situation, and gain an advantage.

VALUING AND DEVALUING INNER PEACE

Valuing And Devaluing Inner Peace

Valuing inner peace isn’t just words; it’s our practicality.
So how did we – and do we – lose it?

Our true reality of pure consciousness is contentment in clarity, which is divine splendour (the dictionary definition). Valuing this clarity and realising it as our original essence brings great contentment. We no longer follow the animated crowd, as inner peace has nothing to do with conditions.

But we became – and become – excited about this clarity, and want to do something interesting with it. In our ‘enthusiasm’, we lost – and lose – clarity and inner peace, and an ‘I’-complex is created.

This invites Mara (immorality) to take advantage of our ignore-ance of our reality, and we became – and become – part of that immorality by taking sides through groupthink.

The middle way is realising and valuing our origin, and realising and valuing Mara’s attempt to distract and disturb inner peace. Recognising Mara’s effort to devalue reality becomes our teacher.

Every time someone is over-egging – making something seem larger, more important, better, or worse than it really is – that is Mara. We meet Mara every day. 🙂

Divine isn’t something to worship; believing that is Mara.
Divine is what we are.

We merely have to acknowledge how far we’ve gone astray – and why.

STOP FOR A MOMENT IN HEAVEN

Stop For A Moment In Heaven

Stop for a moment and be in heaven/nirvana/pure consciousness.
Now go about your chores in heaven/nirvana/pure consciousness.
Everything is orderly – in good order.
We make life too speedy and complicated to realise that we aren’t actually raving loons. 🙂

WE ARE NAIVE, GULLIBLE AND SENTIMENTAL

We Are Naïve, Gullible And Sentimental

We are naïve, gullible and sentimental,
believing what we’re told.

Our dream is only our fault because we believe,
accepting words without proof.
The proof comes from genuine experience.

We’re not what we are told;
we are so much more
… or less. 🙂

DANCING TO SOMEONE ELSE’S TUNE

Dancing To Someone Else’s Tune

Dancing to someone else’s tune:
following someone else’s directions.

We’ve been doing this for thousands of years.

Some people think that we’re part of a universal consciousness, but what consciousness? Is it a materialistic consciousness that creates materialistic (gross) thinking, or pure consciousness (refined) that is purely aware ?

Believing without knowing is easily done. Why? Because others have been dancing to the same tune for thousands of years. It’s become a fashion, a culture of obedience, and we no longer notice that we aren’t in control of ourselves.

Once we’re hooked, we can be lied to, and believe the lies.

Meditation is not a group hug;
it is the natural, individual clarity of seeing

IS BUDDHISM ANTISOCIAL?

Is Buddhism Antisocial?

Buddhism cultivates the social conditions favourable for an individual’s realisation of their true reality, which is pure consciousness. To rest in pure consciousness, we have to be a decent, compassionate person.

This means that we don’t cling to political ideologies which lack empathic understanding and only serve to divide people. We are not a set of others’ beliefs.

Buddhism is about what we all have in common, and that is pure consciousness.

Mara (demonic mind) feeds off conflict like a narcissist, creating conditions to brutalise people’s minds, preventing them from realising their autonomous power to be mentally free, thereby maintaining true morality beyond bias.

Buddhism is not a ideology or religion;
it is the pure way of seeing that’s important
in order to see what’s important.

DISTRACTED TO INSANITY

Distracted to Insanity

When we are distracted by images, words and ideas,
we are not in our right mind.
Our right mind is clarity.

Unable to think straight,
we are obsessed with and addicted to others’ ideas.

Ideas, words and images deceive consciousness.
If we’re talking to a person filled with concepts,
there is no communication, just projection.

Distraction is a fool’s game.

DELAY AND OVERREACTION

Delay And Overreaction

Delay and overreaction are the manifestation of aversion and desire. Both create consequences that are allowed to happen, and which govern us.

Just as we are controlled by our personal likes and dislikes, so too we are governed en masse by organised delays and overreactions. It’s what the ‘news’ does to us every day, causing our thoughts and emotions to take sides and creating conflict.

We merely have to look at events created by delay or overreaction that blaze the trail for more of the same. This is the world’s history. Once enacted, there is no turning back unless we wake up and recognise how the world is run – and how we are run.

To transcend our common affliction of groupthink, each individual has to recognise that they are addicted, either through procrastination or excitement.

Waking up is being aware of our true reality,
rather than the projections in our minds.

WE LIVE IN EXPECTATION

We Live In Expectation

Expectation: a strong belief that something will happen.

We’re led to believe that supernatural things can happen, so we expect or hope that they will.

This clouds our judgment about what’s actually going on. We’re fed supernatural stories and elaborate displays that stick in our minds and, even if we don’t believe in them, we still react to those who do. When people meditate, they believe something special will take place when, in actuality, nothing happens. This can cause us to feel disappointed or inferior.

This ‘nothing happening’ is what it’s all about. When nothing’s happening, there is clarity, which we aren’t used to, unfortunately, and so we don’t value it.

In reality, our needs are very simple, spending our precious time undoing our karmic programming.

If, however, we want something interesting, we’re given something interesting and, as a result, we will always miss the point, adding to our karma. This is the indication that Mara is at work.

As we ascend the levels, we look back and wonder, “Why did I ever believe that?” This very question is the precursor to the next step.

Mara activity is all about ‘believe me’ – it cannot help itself.
Don’t believe anyone, even the Buddha.
Know, through direct raw experience.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE EMPTINESS?

What Does It Mean To Be Emptiness?

It’s very simple and ordinary
– there’s nothing weird about it.

Emptiness is the moment of being free of ideas, just aware, empty of identity, mere perception, barely cognisant. It’s that simple. There is no idea of ‘me’ and what I think involved; thoughts become activated a moment later when our programmed memory kicks in.

Emptiness is natural to all sentient beings, but we’re too involved in our species’ way of thinking to realise this simple pure state.

Emptiness is valuing the perfect contentment of the Buddha realm – the clarity of bliss.

“What is bliss?”
Contentment in our understanding.

“I can’t be bliss, I have too much to worry about.
I have ideas about how to make things better.”

Okay.
Do you see what creates the problem we’re in?
🙂

CONSCIOUSNESS ISN’T A RELIGION

Consciousness Isn’t A Religion

All creatures are consciousness.

Religion turns consciousness into a performance.
People turn life into a performance.

Being aware of being conscious is rare.
Realising that consciousness is empty is even rarer.
