The Finger Pointing To The Moon
Religions start with someone looking directly at the moon (pure consciousness).
Every major spiritual tradition begins with a founder who has a direct experience of reality – a moment of profound awakening or divine revelation.
That original moment is the moon.
The problem starts the very next day.
Because that raw experience is impossible to hand over to someone else directly, followers build a framework around it to try and recreate it. They write down rules and rituals, and build institutions.
That framework is the finger.
Over generations, the original experience fades into history, and the institution becomes the form, the finger. At that point, preserving the organisation and enforcing dogma and behaviour onto the followers becomes the entire focus.
People get so caught up defending specific words written in a book that they completely lose the compassion and humility that the book was actually pointing towards.
Now, institutions and religions are almost entirely about looking at the finger, but if we strip away the history, the politics and guilt, we actually find the core instruction that was originally designed to help us look past all of it.
Do we think it’s possible for people to find that original moon experience inside a traditional religion today? Or do we have to leave the institution behind to find it?
