The first three pieces of advice from the Kalama Sutra
could upset some people.
The Kalama Sutra is a famous discourse of the Buddha, found in the Anguttara Nikaya of the Pali Canon. Often called the ‘Buddha’s Charter of Free Enquiry’, it offers a guide on how to evaluate spiritual and ethical teachings.

- Hearsay or oral tradition
- Lineage or past habit
- Scriptural or textual authority
It’s worth considering the consequences of these pieces of advice … Even though this was meant for beginners, it applies to any of us who think we’re more advanced.
