How We Improved Our Understanding
How do we know we’re a better person than we were before?
We are more confident, accommodating and compassionate. We don’t take ourselves seriously, as our self is just an old idea that has very strong glue.
How do we know we haven’t improved?
We lack confidence, accommodation, compassion – and we haven’t noticed it.
The paradox of ‘self’ improvement is realising that what we see as fault in ourself is actually wisdom. Awareness, compassion and humility allow us to see our flaws, while a lack of growth hides behind a wall of blind spots.
Ultimately, the surest sign that we have improved
is our willingness to admit we still have work to do.
A person who has truly grown looks back at who they were and thinks, “Wow, I can’t believe I used to think/act that way.”
If we can look at our past self with a mixture of gentle amusement and compassion, we’ve already broken free from the old idea of who or what we were.
