SPIRITUAL JOBSWORTHS

Spiritual Jobsworths

The term ‘jobsworth’ describes anyone who doesn’t use common sense, but sticks rigidly to the rules.

There are certain personality types associated with this label who are competitive. People who thrive in structured environments often gravitate toward these roles. They feel safer following a book and repeating jargon rather than exercising compassionate judgement, and lose sight of how they affect others.

Spiritual jobsworths are overly preoccupied with fixed protocols. They think of themselves as gatekeepers – the inner circle – but someone who is unhelpful becomes an obstacle rather than a facilitator.

Individuals who use their knowledge of a spiritual traditions as oneupmanship make others feel that they shouldn’t be there as they’re not ‘spiritual enough’. There is an irony to individuals who claim to be on a path of ego-reduction, but who enjoy exercising power over others. They appear as inflexible corporate mindfulness keepers rather than offering genuine support.
