SELF HARMING IS HELL

Self Harming is Hell.

The number of hospital admissions after people have deliberately poisoned themselves has risen by almost 50% in a decade. New NHS figures show there were more than 114,000 cases in England, Wales and Northern Ireland during 2011.

There may be various reasons for this, but one 22 year old said, “It’s because I don’t like myself.” That doesn’t this say much about our modern society does it?

I now believe that there is social engineering of the population happening: each generation is being manipulated in different ways…or we are being run by totally ‘wannabe idiots’? Actually, I think they are both happening at the same time!

This seems to happening in every walk of life. The more the population is controlled, the more profit is made, with no empathy for the effect of the outcome. I have met a London ‘banker’ who didn’t care how he made his money, until one day he realised, “If I win, someone else loses!”..and he quit. However, the evil game is still going on.

We may all be playing a part in this hell, knowingly or unknowingly. When observing the mind at work, notice its patterning…its self-programming! We are still in charge of the creation of our world, but there are viruses from outside sources that lodged in the mind. These viruses can only incubate in the poison of our selfish negative emotions: Pride, Jealousy, Fear, Anger, Hope and Ignorance.

Do what you can for others, and do not ignore them.

Do good,

Do no evil

Tame the mind.

DEDICATING MERIT

Dedicating merit.

At the end of any practice, it is always good to dedicate it to all sentient beings. It completes the practice and rids us of any self centred-ness.

Whatever merit we have accumulated

may it benefit all sentient beings

that they may attain Buddha hood.

Being aware of the illusory nature

of all sentient beings,

may compassion well up

at their plight of failing to realise their empty nature.

May all beings be happy, and have the causes of happiness.

May they be free from suffering, and the causes of suffering.

May they never lose the happiness free from suffering.

May they be free from attraction, aversion and impartiality,

and remain in great equanimity.

TRYING TOO HARD

Trying too hard.

Sometimes we try too hard – I know I do!

We don’t notice we are getting too enthusiastic and a little rigid: we lack a softness. We can be too keen to ‘get it right! This brings us to the Buddha’s immortal saying, “Not too tight and not too loose,” and only we can know when we have to relax, or tighten a little more. The more we look and listen, the finer the tuning. We have to be alert to our own short comings, and relaxed about them at the same time.

Finding fault with others is not so helpful. However, this doesn’t mean we don’t notice what is going on!

Spirituality is tough. We are constantly being taken over by ego, when ego actually needs to take a back seat. Ego is just our consciousness clinging to fixate concepts about our own ideas: it doesn’t want to loose its grip, and that is why we react. We also need tenacity to proceed!

This brings us to the value of a teacher, which is a touchy subject for westerners. The way in which we regard the teacher will reflect back on us. This is truly a difficult subject to face.

If we see the teacher as an ordinary person – that is the value of the teachings we will get back.

If we see the teacher as a clever person – that is the value of the teachings we will get back.

If we see the teacher as a insightful person – that is the value of the teachings we will get back.

If we see the teacher as a lineage holder – that is the value of the teachings we will get back.

If we see the teacher as a Buddha – that is the value of the teachings we will get back.

I have to be honest: I see the teacher as a representative of the Buddha’s teachings, but there is sometimes total surrender.

Not too tight and not too loose.

We push from our side.

The teacher pulls from his side.

The secret is in devotion,

totally letting go,

in pure perception.

SPIRITUAL MATERIALISM

from Spiritual Materialism by Chogyam Trungpa.

(Trungpa is a tough cookie, giving us no place to run!)

We have come here to learn about spirituality. I trust the genuine quality of this search but we must question its nature. The problem is that ego can convert anything to its own use, even spirituality. Ego is constantly attempting to acquire and apply the teachings of spirituality for its own benefit.

The teachings are treated as an external thing, external to “me”, a philosophy which we try to imitate. We do not actually want to identify with or become the teachings. So if our teacher speaks of renunciation of ego, we attempt to mimic renunciation of ego.

We go through the motions, make the appropriate gesture, but we really do not want to sacrifice any part of our way of life.

We become skilful actors, and while playing deaf and dumb to the real meaning of the teachings, we find some comfort in pretending to follow the path…

 Self -Deception.

Self-deception is a constant problem as we progress along a spiritual path. Ego is always trying achieve spirituality. It is rather like wanting to witness your own funeral. For instance, in the beginning we might approach our spiritual friend hoping to get something wonderful from him/her.

This approach is called “hunting the guru.” Traditionally, it is compared to hunting the deer musk.

The hunter stalks the deer, kills it, and removing the musk. We could take this approach to the guru and spirituality, but it would be self-deception. It would have nothing to do with real opening or surrendering….

THE EVIL OF TRAUMA

The Evil of Trauma.

Spirituality – from the point of view of Buddhism – is not an easy subject to discuss, as there are many elements involved. There are also some that we may not want to look at. We all have a Light side, a Dark side and a Indifferent side. If we are to progress spiritually, we must be aware of all sides to our nature. We can thereby develop empathy and compassion for other who are also stuck in the mud!

There is another element – someone is creating more MUD!

We are the Buddhas in the Mud – the Light in the Dark. However, there are those who would use the Light and the Dark against us, for their own benefit. It is a subtle business, and due to our own bias, we may not wish to look at this. When investigating, we must be aware of being vessels with holes in, or turned upside down, or contaminated.

We may be obsessed with looking at our “light side”, but we also have to understand our “dark side”.

 The Trauma of Evil.

TRAUMA: A deeply distressing experience. An emotional shock following a stressful event or a physical injury, which may lead to long-term neurosis. ORIGIN late 17th cent: from Greek, literally wound.

If people are traumatised, they can then be easily manipulated.

It’s an easy mistake to make, thinking that we can neutralise evil by dismissing it as an illusion. There’s a common misperception that Buddhism states that all suffering is an illusion. People too readily misunderstand, and think that because everything is an illusion, it does not hurt the body … and mind! What happens to the body and mind does not affect Essence: however, Essence can be obscured by distractions in the mind.

This is the result of a misunderstanding regarding our relative existence, and our absolute existence. These have to be understood properly as the Middle Way, a unity. No one is saying, “Dismiss evil as it’s a mere illusion”.

We all carry wounds from past traumas. These are held in our Alaya-Vijnana – the 8th consciousness in the mind. That is where our memories and karmic store are imprinted. However, the feelings of trauma are stored in the subtle body, and have an effect on our inner winds, channels and energies.

The concept of ‘original sin’ is just this store house of karma that we carry with us from life to life. This is what is known as trauma, or wound. However, we cannot ignore that we too have created trauma for others in the past – and are doing so even now – and bad karma is created. We are never guiltless. If we have each been everyone’s mother, and they ours, we have also committed every evil act. The antidote to this is active kindness and compassion.

The world today is full of trauma – subtle trauma. There is actual trauma, reported trauma and implied trauma: together, these result in a web of trauma. We are bombarded with reports of horrendous acts in the world. Worst of all is the trauma inflicted on children, who learn to fear the world around them and believe that life is no longer a safe place.

For me, the Dharma still holds all the answers, because it is all to do with our perception and projection. I’d like to continue this theme by considering Spiritual Materialism (to follow).

DISCLOSURE OF ET’S AND US SECRET POWER

http://vimeo.com/65430488

This is Hon. Paul Helfyer.
He is disclosing ET presence on Earth and secret US control of the world.

You will have to make your own mind up about this.

I came across this, this morning as I’m writing about the Evil of Trauma. THE BUDDHA IN THE MUD is one thing, but someone has been adding to the MUD!

FIRST THERE IS A MOUNTAIN

First there is a mountain.

First there is a mountain.

Then there is no mountain.

Then there is.

This illustrates the two truths.

First, we see a beautiful mountain: that is relative truth.

Then we study, and realise that the mountain has no true existence: that is absolute truth.

Then we see the beautiful mountain again, but now we also know its true nature.

On a practical level, we first believe everything we see as being real. Then, we study and practise, and realise that no thing has an inherent existence from its own side: everything is created by causes and conditions.

If we get caught up in the first state – relative truth – we end up in eternalism.

If we get caught up in the second state – absolute truth – we end up in nihilism.

We need both to function as healthy human beings. This is the middle way. Being in the middle way, we do not get thrown by situations or emotions. We see things for what they are – empty essence.

In this way, we can respect and appreciate life…and find a sense of humour. We begin to ask the question, “What is not humour?” as it seems everything is taken so seriously and rigidly. However, in an attempt to ‘give up’ everything, we can make an even bigger deal of it all – and so, our giving up and letting go gets heavier and heavier! We need a light touch…after all, there is nothing to give up!

First, there is a mountain.

Then there is no mountain.

Then there is.

First, there is a self.

Then there is no self.

Then there is.

It’s all a real illusion.

But we should still get our illusory self

Out of the way of the illusory truck!

WHAT IS MY FUNCTION IN LIFE?

What is my function in life?

Animals use the ‘reptilian’ primitive brain for survival – fight, flight or freeze. Their function is to survive and breed.

Humans have the ability to recognise consciousness, and therefore can know their true nature. That’s if they ever get around to asking the question, “Why am I here?”… and sticking with it! So the function of being human is to know our true nature – unless we adopt the animal mode.

While investigating our true nature, we can share with others at the same time. This utilises the two truths of absolute reality and temporary reality. However, we too have a reptilian brain, which can cloud our consciousness.

One of the problems in life is finding a relative, worldly function, and then holding onto it with much pride. We do this to give ourselves a sense of belonging and satisfaction, but it can also imprison us. Our jobs and family comes to mind.

This idea of function has concerned me for most of my life. Ego wants to play a part in the world. I loved those days when I had a sense of function and worth, but it doesn’t seem to happen any more…pity! It was a feeling of self satisfaction, a job well done, aren’t I good…smugness. Well, everyone else was doing it so why not me?

Then this morning it hit me! Function is a moment-to-moment experience. It comes and goes. And there’s no point in hanging onto it, as, once achieved, it’s gone! Intellectual understanding is not the same as discovering something for oneself. Although I may have an intellectual understanding of the way we hang on to experiences, the actual experience is much more profound, and its meaning seems to change as it has gone to the heart of the matter. And one just says, “Wow!”

Part of our Samsaric dungeon of existence is the memory of one moment of consciousness clinging to the next moment of consciousness. There is an illusion that we are the same, continuous, unchanging entity – but we are not! This illusory entity hangs together because of the five skandha. We can see these as we might see the ingredients of a biscuit: form, feeling, perception, karmic formation and consciousness. Take one ingredient away and we fall apart!

It is our own consciousness that holds this temporary entity together.

We are sacred space, but we became too active within this space, filling it and creating ‘form’ = ignorance. Form is emptiness, emptiness is form! From that, the other skandha arose….

 The Five Skandha (heaps)

The sutras describe five aggregates:

1 Form, or matter: known as “rupa”, includes external and internal matter. The physical world and the material body.

2 Sensation or feeing: sensing an object as either pleasant, unpleasant or neutral.

3 Perception or cognition: registering whether an object is recognised or not.

4 Karmic formation or volition: all types of mental habits, thoughts, ideas, opinions, prejudices, decisions and compulsions triggered by an object.

5 Consciousness or discernment: mental faculties.

SIX DEATHS OR BARDOS

Six Deaths or Bardos.

(This is from Pundarika UK, written by Tsoknyi Rinpoche 3rd. Death or Bardo means ‘gap’ an in-between state of which we are normally not aware.)

 KYI-NE

The bardo of this life, the bardo of birth. Co-existent with arising and birth is passing and death. On the subtle level everything is constantly momentarily arising and passing – moments, thoughts, emotions, events. On a more gross level, all the necessary conditions and circumstance come together for us to be born – conception and the accumulation of the five kinds of elements: earth, water, fire, wind and space. Since the moment we were born we are passing, our life moves towards completion then disappears. The idea of 70 or 80 years seems like a long time, but in terms of the universe it is very short. On the macrocosmic level is the arising and passing of planets and stars which support our life, which will also eventually disintegrate.

MILAM

The bardo of dreams. The whole of cyclic existence is like a big dream – our ignorance is like sleeping and we are dreaming, but we take it so seriously. We grasp after all these things we see as real and this is where our suffering comes from. Our sleeping dreams reflect what is happening in our lives which is why we need to take our daytime practice seriously and continue being mindful and aware when going to sleep. If we do this then when we die it is the continuation of the nature of our mind. Our child luminosity will dissolve into the ground luminosity and we will be enlightened in the dharmakaya form.

SAMADHI

The bardo of meditation. Here we are talking about purifying our mind of the cloud of disturbing thoughts and emotions, not by force but by resting in our natural mind, dharmakaya. Meditation isn’t something solid, or a place to go. It just means being aware in the present moment in a simple way and letting things be, which is actually quite difficult. Bardo literally means ‘between’, and in between the subsiding of one thought and the arising of the next, that is the bardo of Samadhi.

CHIKHA

The bardo of the moment before death. All our elements dissolve back to the external world – earth, water, fire then air as we stop breathing. At that point the inner dissolution begins. We can have many different experiences here, depending on the kind of life we have led. The important thing is to know, in the confusion of what is happening, that everything we see is a projection of ourselves, and that it is a vision of the bardo. In order to be able to do that, it is important to practice now. There is a glimpse of ground luminosity – if we can recognise this from the stability of our practice then there is an opportunity to achieve realization.

CHONYI

The Bardo of dharmata. What happens now depends on individual circumstances. For a normal person dying peacefully this can last for a few days and we may not be aware we have died. The important thing is how we are programming ourselves in our lifetime, so that we can remain calm and clear and aware of what is happening. We should remember our teacher and any deity we feel a connection with.

SIPA

The bardo of becoming. This can last 7 weeks and again, what happens depends on our karma and mind training. Pure perception and sacred outlook are needed here if we are not to get carried away by anger and jealousy which could lead to a birth in the lower realms. We are at the mercy of karmic winds and look for refuge wherever we can which leads to conception outside our control. If we can maintain our awareness there may be the opportunity to chose our rebirth in auspicious circumstances in the aspiration to help sentient beings.

THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND ‘PREPPERS’

The New World Order and ‘Preppers”.

They both say, “The world is to be destroyed”, and all that will remain is the New World Order and the ‘Preppers’. So…this New World Order’s foundation will start with these two groups which, in reality, have the same aim – “The Self Cherishing Me-First Foundation”. The rest of us will have to leave – dead! Not a very nice way to start a new world is it?!

The internet seems to be full of fear mongers, sowing seeds of doom and destruction, and their attempts to save themselves from Death. How does that work? What is so idiotic is that by the time something did actually happen (and we have had so many predictions!) people will have died anyway. If we spend our life fearing and preparing, and we have to die anyway, what was the use of all that worry?

Just look closely at the people who perpetuate the illusion that they will be saved. Are you going to live your life according to their values?

Live life how you wish to live, in clarity and harmony. Better to chant OM MANI PEME HUM (a very profound mantra on Compassion), than to hold on desperately to a handful of gold and some cans of food. At our inevitable deaths, those will all be useless.

The one thing this hysteria does have in its favour is that it heightens our sense of self, and the emotions – and so this becomes easier to see.

The moment of so-called death, and afterwards, is so precious for our spiritual development. The only thing in which we can trust is the very nature of our own awareness.

Sticks and stones may break my bones.

Consciousness can be distracted.

Essence can never die,

because it is not a creation.

.

Be at peace. Be sane.

(There are some bad things going on in the world, but we don’t have to make it worse.)

STRESS AND MEDITATION

Stress and Meditation.

Stress takes energy away from the body’s needs, and distracts the mind. It also creates toxins in the body, attacking our immune system. Just listening to the ‘news’ causes us stress and worry: it’s also interesting how ‘sexed up’ news has become. We can do without this added stress in our lives!

Maybe stop listening and watching like an addict. The ‘news’ hasn’t changed in years: it’s all about terror nowadays, and it feels as if the media (and those behind the media) are doing the terrorising! It’s all about ‘what if?’ instead of ‘what is’!

Our lives are also stressed with work, and the expectations of family and neighbours, who still believe everything they hear in the media/programming.

This bring us to meditation, which of course is meant to de-stress – but if we are not careful, that can also be stressful, as we become fixated upon our practice, and caught up in do’s and don’ts, so losing our inner peace.

We have to be clear about the stages of meditation. To start, meditation is calming the body and mind, so that we are not taken over by circling, stressful thoughts. To do this, we either focus on a ‘support’ or rest in the gap of nowness.

The first stages of meditation are about relaxing and healing wounds – and feeling better. If we can calm down, we can cope better. It’s similar to applying an antidote to situations or emotions: these are only a temporary fix, as the situations and emotions will arise again. This is why we have to “upgrade”.

Mingling meditation with daily life.

This the main reason I write – because not everyone has the good fortune to hear about the “upgrade”. Meditation is more than sitting in peace on a comfy cushion, while expecting the world to conform to our needs (I’ve witnessed many students putting themselves under stress about being too cold or too hot – about things being not quite perfect…).

Once we have the experience of Empty Awareness (which is so ordinary, it’s shockingly missed), we can then allow thoughts to arise, as we no longer fixate upon them. Thoughts now become an expression of Emptiness, for the benefit of all sentient beings.

And that’s how we love!

In empty awareness

there is nothing to be stressed.

The only thing to be stressed

is that there is nothing to be stressed!

.

WHATEVER BENEFITS THE MIND

Whatever benefits the mind.

Most of this blog is written from a Dzogchen perspective (also called Maha Ati): recognising and resting in Empty Essence, Cognisant Nature and and unconfined Compassion (the three Kayas). This view is called Rigpa, which leads to the continuous state of the Kayas: Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya.

This is not to say that this is the only way!

Anything and everything within the whole range of the Buddha’s teaching is beneficial to the mind in some way. There are many traditions in Buddhism, and words may be used differently. There are also many levels within the traditions, and at each level, the same words are used, but the meaning changes.

If the Therevadan approach really works for you, then that is what benefits your mind.

If the Pratyakabuddha approach works for you, then that is what benefits your mind.

If the Mahayana approach works for you, then that is what benefits your mind.

If the Tantra approach works for you, then that is what benefits your mind.

If the Maha Ati approach works for you, then that is what benefits your mind.

If being either Theistic or Non Theistic really works for you, then that is what benefits your mind.

It is all about genuine clarity, compassion, and inner peace. It’s beneficial to understand the many methods, because when meeting the minds of others, we need to know where they are coming from. If we rest in genuine clarity, compassion, and inner peace, maintaining our equanimity, we can allow space for communication to take place at any level.

It’s also important to understand that sometimes we need to call upon different methods to suit our state of mind at that time.

If we find that just being out in the fresh air works for us,

Then that is what benefits our mind!

DON’T REGRET

Don’t regret.

Everything that happens in life is a lesson. From lessons, we learn…or not! If we use intelligence, and recognise emotions and the value of compassion, then we will be facing in the right direction. Of course, we make mistakes, or do not have enough data, but if we are open, we will progress. If we have the right intention, answers will come! It can take time for us to assimilate information before we can move on, without forcing ourselves.

Feeling regret, guilt or pressure is an obstacle which weigh us down: we need time and space to recognise clearly what is taking place in the mind.

In the last few days before my father’s death, I asked him, “What do you feel about your life?” He just replied, “Resentment.” This was a shock to me, and I felt sadness that there was nothing I could say to help him, at that time.

We will keep going through the same scenarios until we learn lessons, however painful these may be.

I slept, and life meant nothing.

I dreamed that life was entertainment.

I awoke and found that life was duty.

In duty, I found love.

In love, I melt.

If we are open to learning without expectations,

we return to a child’s joy.

SIMPLICITY IN DARK TIMES

Simplicity in dark times.

I had a dream last night: two of my teachers, from different traditions, came and gave me a ‘bonk’ on the head (touching foreheads is a traditional Tibetan greeting). One cut some of my hair (this symbolises taking refuge).

The strange thing was, I couldn’t understand a word they were saying, but the ‘bonk’ said everything. It reminded me of simplicity, renunciation and humility.

Sometimes, the Dharma can sound complicated, lofty, and a little wordy. All that matters is knowing empty essence, and understanding that anything that appears in empty essence is merely a mental projection.

At our darkest time – the moment of death, when due to sickness and weakness our minds can be a little fuddled – simplicity is of utmost importance.

We are living in dark times, and it is easy to get carried away with what is going on in the darkness. Being so distracted, we lose simplicity and clarity. Once we have realised clarity, simplicity is the reminder (or however you wish to word it) of our natural being.

When we know fearless simplicity in the darkness,

Appearances will be beneficial reminders.

If we do not recognise empty clarity, all appearances will be

Scary projections.

.

( Interestingly, since my wife and I put an earthing sheet on the bed, we are having more vivid dreams. All this is, is a conductive thread cris-crossing the sheet, and wired into the earth (only) socket, or wired to an earthed radiator!)

ALIENS

Aliens.

On many forums, there is much spoken about “Aliens”. Some even claim to talk with them: it’s worrying how mundane those conversations are! There’s nothing one could respond to with an, “Oh, now that is interesting!” Having a big shiny motor is no guarantee of wisdom, and neither is a deluded imagination. They fail to see that those who talk about such matters place themselves as intercessors, through whom the “Aliens” talk (reminds you of anything?), creating hope and fear in others. Suspicious to say the least…

If there is such a thing as reincarnation, then we are all “Aliens”, having had infinite incarnations throughout the universe (and who, incidentally, have no need for mundane flying saucers!)

There is much in this Samsaric world to worry about, especially Hope, Fear and Ignorance. Adding to this by speculating does not help. In fact, it fuels even more Hope, Fear and Ignorance.

We are all “Aliens” with Buddha nature, but we are ignorant of that fact.

Anything that moves

and makes decisions has awareness.

Anything that has awareness has Buddha nature.

Anything that recognises its Buddha nature has Compassion.

Anything that does not recognise its Buddha nature is ignorant.

Anyone running around talking about other “Aliens” is foolish.

LINEAGE – MEETING OF MINDS

Lineage – a meeting of minds.

We are unique individuals, rather than one whole: the universe is full of unique individuals. People talk of Oneness, but that has never happened! We can be at one with our unique being (the unity of the two truths), and by doing so, we can be in harmony with others. And so, there may be unity in diversity!

Having said this, we do need the right company on our journey. It’s not a matter of joining a club: it is hearing a certain view that sounds familiar to us, and that feels right.

Finding such a connection is a rare occurrence, and very important. It is feeling part of a lineage that our inner being merges with, and this creates a sense of trust, confidence and a firm foundation

There are many lineages, but it is rare to find a lineage that is unbroken from its source. From a Buddhist point of view, an unbroken lineage is a series of teachings that have been handed down by word of mouth (breath) and continuously practised. Getting such support is unbelievably valuable.

If we are left to our own devices, we can easily go astray. This may seem a contradictory thing to say, but if we truly want to be free and independent, we first need the discipline of a lineage. This is like studying anything! We then realise that we are on a well-trodden and trustworthy path.

The problem, in this New Age, is that people want to reinvent spirituality because they don’t understand it: they have no lineage, and so much is speculative. Although a few ideas are borrowed from ancient teachings, they stay in the realms of fantasy with no real substance. The hallmark of such activity is passive aggression, with everything relating to “my way”.

Lineage is not a matter of joining a group and getting along with other students: they are there to cause you a lot of problems!!! This seems to work as a catalyst to bring one’s negativity to the fore, and this can feel very raw. It’s a tough bootcamp, because there is an assumption that you will all get along because you are all in the same lineage, but that is not always the case.

It is the teachings, and the living commentary of a teacher, that are the outer lineage. If there is an outer lineage, there must be an inner lineage. This is to do with devotion. Devotion is a deep appreciation for the teachings and lineage: this comes under Guru Yoga, and is a direct link to the lineage holders (knowledge holders) who have gone before.

I cannot begin to express how magical this is. There is a sort of longing, a supplicating, to certain deities who exhibit qualities such as Compassion, which, in turn blesses us with Compassion and Clarity.

It is here that we can feel confident and happy to be on our own…in oneness!

Guru Yoga is a huge subject. It is the path of Vajrayana (the Diamond path), and it’s for those with a certain unbreakable attitude towards the emotions and the teachings. This entails commitment, and a lot of preliminary practices…a lot…known as the Ngondro.

Lineage inspires.

PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology.

Psychology rules this modern era, dominating every walk of life. Psychology guides all our choices, and divides our cultures, thereby keeping everything in motion. Our base instincts of ‘self’ preservation (through the emotions), are used to manipulate us in any direction, calling it progress. Psychology promotes our pre-occupation with self image: it divides hearts and minds.

Tibetan Buddhism is all about psychology: it counteracts the ideology of ‘self’ promotion, and unites hearts and minds.

If we want to solve a problem, we have to identify the problem. Knowledge is neutral, being neither good nor bad. It’s all about use of knowledge. Psychology may be used to heal or destroy, and it is up to us to know which is which.

However, this is not at all easy to see, as the promotion of healing may actually be destruction in disguise: the contrary is also true – destruction may be healing. It depends what you want to destroy, and what you want to heal!

 Buddhist psychology

is all about emptiness

– our first nature.

Modern psychology

is all about personality

– our second nature.

THE ART OF THINKING

The Art of Thinking.

Thoughts and thinking are not the same. Thinking is analysing or reasoning in the present, whereas thoughts are products of past thinking or programming, which are stored in the mind.

Thinking can either open the mind, connecting the dots and setting us free now, or it can create even greater fixated thoughts for the future, which drive us crazy!

In meditation, we first free ourselves from the present thinking mind and past thoughts. When our practice is stable, we then allow thoughts to arise, without grasping at them, as they no longer affect us. This helps with mingling meditation with daily life.

At a more advanced level, we can practise analytical meditation, when we either scan the mind for past data or experiences, or allow thoughts or thinking to be an expression of emptiness: thinking is merely recognition at this stage.

Thoughts are pre-conceived ideas from the past, whereas thinking is analysing that data – or lack of data. We should be aware that our thoughts may be subliminal programming that we have picked up!

The Art of Thinking is a matter of viewing information without bias.

We need to be able to lay all options on an imaginary table in front of us, without either accepting or rejecting anything. Then we wait to see what joins up, allowing an underlying principle to complete the picture. Then thinking becomes recognition!

This impartial objectivity is neither accepting or rejecting information. If we do we fall into the trap of accepting and rejecting, we come under the laws of hope and fear – the laws of attraction and repulsion. We can then be misled, which brings us to the next factor.

Information that we receive may be presented with two contradictory aspects at the same time, in order to deceive and confuse. In all media, arguments are presented for and against: alternative views are fed to us unconsciously, from a conscious source. It’s bit like the moon landing…did they land, or was it a fake setup…or was it both? This merely keeps people speculating.

This keeps the mind bouncing from one to the other, not knowing, but guessing. The object is to unsettle the mind, to distract it: this is psychology at work. The use of phrases such as “As cool as a mountain stream” to describe a cigarette is a case in point – and, of course, this is still going on today, but with greater refinement.

If we are too quick to jump to one conclusion or another without pure perception, we will be deceived. Thinking can either clarify, or add to our confusion.

The underlying principle of

The Art of Thinking

is

Recognition.

In Recognition, we know.

LIKE AND DISLIKE

Like and dislike.

The reason awareness is so important,

is to notice liking and disliking.

The very moment our attention is held by

liking or disliking something,

awareness deviates from purity.

Of course as house holders we have to function in the world. However, within any action, stillness is present – being aware of all movements in the mind. This is how we upgrade as human beings.

It is merely a matter

of keeping the door open

for the universe to enter.

We are that big!

LIVING IN AN INSANE WORLD

Living in an insane world.

Can we find sanity?

Tricky.

What is normality?

Tricky.

Well who is sane?

Tricky.

This is a tricky world.

We sentient beings are not enlightened because we are confused about the truth concerning our true nature. We spend our entire lives rushing around, looking for the truth: “Do they have it? Is it over there? Who is stopping us from finding it? If we do this or that, will we find the truth?”

That is so silly!

We are the truth.

That’s how insane this world is.

We are living in a mental institution.

We are the guards and the inmates.

And, we have the key…

…that’s how insane this world is.

This is the very reason for love and compassion.

Traumatising the young.

This video is called “The Art of Deception.” To control a population, it is best done when they are young, through creating confusion, wounds and bias.

When money is involved, a very subtle control is needed to convince you to part with it. Marketing is a refined science nowadays, using our wish to do ‘good’.

The art of deception is to distract consciousness.

BODHICHITTA

Bodhichitta

(caring for others more than oneself).

There are Two aspects to Bodhchitta: Absolute and Relative.

Absolute bodhichitta corresponds to Emptiness.

Relative bodhichitta corresponds to Compassion.

Bodhi means our ‘enlightened essence’ and chitta means ‘heart’ or ‘mind’. Bodhichitta is translated as ‘the heart of enlightened mind’. Arousing bodhichitta is: for the sake of others.

Relative bodhichitta is the compassionate wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings and to train in the methods to achieve that aim.

Absolute bodhichitta is the direct insight into the absolute nature of things.

This may seem strange, but Absolute Bodhichitta has to come before Relative Bodhichitta!

Chogyam Trungpa:

Compassion automatically invites you to relate with people, because you no longer regard people as a drain on your energy. They recharge your energy, because in the process of relating with them you acknowledge your wealth, your richness. So, if you have difficult tasks to preform, such as dealing with people or life situations, you do not feel you are running out of resources. Each time you are faced with a difficult task, it presents itself as a delightful opportunity to demonstrate your riches, your wealth. There is no feeling of poverty at all in this approach to life.”

THE TRUTH

The Truth.

The truth will never be found ‘out there’.

The reason anything ‘out there’ may be known

is because of what is ‘in here’.

The ultimate truth is our own awareness.

Without that, nothing would be known,

Not even God.

Everything ‘out there’ is known by virtue

of what is ‘in here’.

Know thy self.

Know everything.

Ah!

But God awoke us!

Awoke whom?

When we know our true nature,

we will know God.

Ah!

So God exists?

As our very nature.

Ah!

EFFORTLESS EFFORT

Effortless effort.

‘Lazy’ is not a word we want to hear! But let’s face it, we spend a third of our life asleep, and most of our (so-called) waking period either occupied, or vacant (not knowing, staring blankly). And, if we do meditate for twenty minutes or an hour, we probably only experience a couple minutes in stillness. So one could say, this is a lazy, dreamy world, due to distractions.

One of our problems in studying spirituality is intellectualisation: the acquisition of scholarly fact. A philosophical understanding is important, when the mind is unconvinced of a certain aspect. However, it can also cloud genuine ‘ordinary’ experience.

Sometimes, this results in not bothering to actually practise, or practising mechanically, or trying too hard. If we find that we have to make an effort (which, on one hand, is good discipline), this will become tiring, and will create an obstacle to merely letting be. There are two obstacles to stillness – agitation and dullness – which create a laziness, when we have lost the point of what we are about.

If we forget why we are practising (practice is merely being aware), we will fall into dullness. We can think that we are being aware, but that is not awareness: that is being caught in a mental pre-occupation.

Quite often, we hear politicians argue about a topic – they don’t do anything, they just argue, putting over valid-sounding points…and that’s all. We all get caught up in this type of activity. If we are over-active, we lose control, we lose the point, we lose the clear view.

If there was such a thing as a devil, he’d be saying, “Oh, goody!”

‘Effortless effort’ is understanding the experience of barely being aware. Too much effort and it becomes conceptual. The real reality, the real magic, is not just merely resting in awareness: it is the awareness itself. Be aware of awareness and do nothing…do nothing…do nothing. Whatever arises, merely be aware, and drop all attachment. Drop being aware, and merely be aware.

In a 90 year life

30 years will be in sleep.

Throughout a working day

we are occupied (involved)

or entertained (vacant)

So when are we?

A couple of minutes a day?

Most of the time we are knackered. The more we get involved (agitated), the more tired (lazy) we get.

The more we notice

the more we practise

the deeper we go.

The more we notice

the more we practise

the deeper we go.

Liberation is in the awareness, and we feel brighter. There may be all sorts of distractions: that will never change. Just know that awareness is always present. It’s all about recognition. Nothing else.

Make sure you take time out during the day – apart from formal meditation sessions – to just be…pause. It’s your life.

JUDGING

Judging.

What I love about Buddhism is taking everything apart, in order to realise that a so-called problem is not one great solid lump. It’s totally logical. Too often, people misunderstand the word ‘judgement’ and use it in a derogatory way.

We are pure awareness – Empty essence, Cognisant nature and unconfined Compassion. This three-fold awakened nature has five aspects, or qualities of wisdom.

 THE FIVE WISDOMS.

All encompassing = spacious

Mirror-like = clarity

Equanimity = generosity

Discriminating = selfless appreciation

All accomplishing = efficiency without ambition.

When resting in Empty Awareness, these are all present, although one may be more dominant than another. So we can see that we have some natural, innate tools for evolving, and sharing compassion.

However, we live in a relative existence, and so have to be discerning. We have to know what is beneficial and what is not. What is wholesome and what is harmful, and so we have to discriminate between this and that.

There are filters between the five wisdoms, and making a judgement. If we break down the process of making a judgement, it comprises of all these stages: wisdom, discernment, discrimination, judgement, decision, action. Most of the time, we don’t notice these are merely react, and so lack control. So judging is a tricky as well as challenging business, as a sense of self is more, or less, present. An action – or reaction – takes place that may be beneficial or harmful to self or others. We can either sentence ourselves and others for life, or set ourselves and others free. To be honest, when we judge we are saying more about ourselves than the thing we are judging, and others pick this up.

However, having said all this, if we are to evolve and live a healthy life, judgements have to take place!

 ……….

There are other tools we can use to purify our understanding, such as the six perfections: Generosity, Patience, Discipline, Perseverance, Meditation, and Transcendent wisdom.

There is also the eight-fold path: Right View. Right Intentions, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration.

Then there are the four enlightened activities: Pacifying, Magnetising, Enriching and Destroying.*

With all this

we shall complete our journey

to …!

[* Pacifying accommodates everything. It reveals that there are no problems, and that aggression from the ego is unnecessary.

Enriching brings to light the process of growth, and allows the process of knowledge.

Magnetising bypasses the conventional reality. In conventional reality, we continually try to draw desired situations towards ourselves and fend off undesirable ones. A realised person simply remains as he or she is, without this ego intervention, attracting naturally.

Destroying is connected to compassion, aimed at ego’s manipulations.]

BEAUTIFUL WORDS

Beautiful words.

We may look for more truth, but we know already- the answer is very simple!

Corinthians (old testament)

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing.

Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself, is not puffed up,

Does not behave itself unseemly, seek not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil;

Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; Bears all things, believes all things, hopes for all things, endures all things.

Love never fails: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet

Polonius:
”This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream

Puck:  If we shadows have offended,

Think but this, and all is mended,

That you have but slumber’d here

While these visions did appear.

And this weak and idle theme,

No more yielding but a dream.”

DIRTY ELECTRICITY

Dirty Electricity or Electro-smog -EMF

There are 6 billion mobile phone users!

Check this out for yourselves, it is something to be aware of.

Dirty Electricity” is used to describe electric power that has become corrupted by our use of modern appliances. Items such as CFL bulbs, cell phone transmission antennas, power supplies for portable computers, cell phone chargers, dimmer switches, variable speed fans and many other electronic devices that require a transformer to convert the voltage will “dirty” the electricity that enters your home.

This form of dirty electro-magnetic fields (EMF) is invisible to the eye, but has a biological effect on the human body and has been associated with a wide variety of illnesses.”

Be safe.

CALM, CLEAR AND COMPASSIONATE

Calm, Clear and Compassionate.

These are three stage: Calming the mind, bringing about Clarity, and natural Compassion.

Anything that calms the mind and cuts through circling thoughts is the start of becoming a healthy, intelligent human being. It liberates us from material and mental programming.

We have to start somewhere (and this will depending on our temperament and circumstances) in our investigation into becoming familiar with our own awareness. This catalyst could be anything: for me, it was the moment I picked up a foil (sword), and realised there was a stillness within me that had not been experienced before. This lead to meditation…and the sword of wisdom – cutting through concepts!

Through calming the mind, clarity naturally dawns, and we start to see in an unbiased way. We realise we are just a mirror. This doesn’t mean it is totally clear, but there is just enough data for the present moment and the next step. There will be more knowledge coming our way, when we are in the right place at the right time.

When we are Calm and Clear, there comes a point where confidence arises, and we no longer worry about our own progress. With this confidence, we naturally find Compassion.

Compassion is the hallmark of being Calm and Clear. This very compassion is our teacher, as we now feel responsible towards others, rather than merely our own needs. Caring about others more than ourself bring about a recognition that a deeper level of stability is needed to be even more Calm and Clear for their benefit.

Compassion is the teacher.

Compassion is that which recognises the needs of others.

Compassion is no longer puffing our self up.

APPRECIATE YOURSELF

Appreciate yourself.

Oh, my gosh yes! The Dharma talks about the destructions of self, I, ego… it does not say ‘whip yourself into total oblivion”! I still love tomatoes on toast, and singing the wrong words to old songs…

This precious life is so…precious! There are countless life forms in the universe that we could have been reborn into, and we managed to achieve humanhood. That is truly remarkable. Although it is said that there are higher realms, here we can start our journey…and maybe complete it!

So what if we have a few wounds, attitude, psychological problems? It’s all workable. Who said anything about having to be perfect before we start? Life is truly intriguing and mind blowing. Our problem is being distracted by something or other. Literally – ‘being’ distracted.

We are lead to believe that we need more in order to ‘improve ourselves’: there is pressure to conform in material world, and this merely creates competitiveness and separation.

If we can appreciate what we have, then we have everything we need: a little money, time, space, a simple roof over our head, and some wholesome food. Having time and space is so precious, like when we were children.

Before I was four years old, I liked myself! Then I learnt that I had to fit into something quite limited and spent a life-time being miserable…I learnt to dislike myself…I was never good enough. We all carry some sort of baggage around with us – mine was feeling worthless and pointless. Unfortunately, even spiritual organisations can make us feel worthless.

It took me more than forty years of bootcamp, studying and practising to realise something…that my life is fruitful!

Appreciate yourself – warts and all – “’cos you’re worth it!”…and so is everyone else. Don’t waste a moment arguing. This incarnation is too precious. The more we worry about what others are doing, the more stressed we will get.

We can easily get caught up in others’ dreams.

Lighten your load,

Lighten your mind,

Lighten your life.

Appreciate your simple life.

CAUSES AND CONDITIONS

Causes and Conditions.

Everything including this Earth and the solar system is created by causes and conditions. Every situation, every conflict is created by causes and conditions. Nothing ‘just happens’! There are accidents, but they again are a result of causes and conditions: it all depends how deep into the game you are looking.

Our thoughts and emotions are created by causes and conditions. Our personal identity is created by causes and conditions. Every effect has a cause. Politics, in all forms, is a manipulation of these cause and conditions.

If something is created by causes and conditions, it has no inherent existence of its own: like everything else, it will comes to pass. Everything is an impermanent event – however, these events create the cause and conditions for another event. Every-thing we hold dear will not last. In time, this body – and everyone that we know – will all dissolve back into subtle energy.

It’s good to keep ‘things’ in perspective.

However, we can still ask questions like: “When things happen in the world, are they by stupidity, by design or do they just happen?” The answer is, for some things just happen, for others it is stupidity, and for others it’s by design. It depends how deeply one looks. There is always a cause.

It’s interesting that anything in the ‘news’ can be traced back to a cause, and a cause behind that. As in chess, an innocuous pawn move is intended for the pawn to be queened at the end when everything else on the board is annihilated…and we’re not supposed to notice!

Politics works on a 40-60 year period, maybe even longer, and definitely not on a four year basis. To plan ahead, one has to take in account of all possibilities…and wait for the right causes and conditions (for the politicians, and not necessarily for the people!).

Fortunately, Buddhism works on a much longer time scale – lifetimes. Sow a good seed in one incarnation, and it will flower in another at some time…when the right causes and conditions arise. Check mate!

REACTING

Reacting.

When the house is on fire,

our habitual patterning

will govern what we do.

There are three ways of viewing our reactions: through Body, Mind and Spirit. We have to be aware of what is happening within us:

Our primitive brain is wired to react in order to protect our body.

Our self-programmed mind reacts to protect our mental picture of ourself.

Our self image reacts and obscures our pure essence by maintaining an artificial reality (the cause of all our problems).

Reacting will depend on the level at which we are working. Reacting, projecting, predicting maintains the type of world in which we desire to live. If we are easily spooked…we are easy to spook! Often just saying one word to a neighbour and off they go, projecting and protecting their world!

The world in which we live is created by our own likes and dislikes. We just so happen to be living in a world full of people who are living in their own worlds, with their own likes and dislikes. Although we cannot change them, we can, at least, change our own reactions. It’s important to remember that a reaction is just a reaction: it’s not who we are. A reaction is an expression which can reflect self-programmed-ness, or a process of de-programming-ness.

Most of us are not rare super-humans who can change the world. We live in a country with certain norms. We work for a company or industry that operates in a certain way. We live with neighbours who are a certain type. We are born into a family that has a certain attitude…and we cannot just change of these. But we also do not ignore them: we can find a way to avoid over-reacting and conform…to a certain degree. This is being skilful, and it creates space. We all need space, other wise we will become involved in arguing all day long.

Maybe the Kali Yuga is a period when the majority on the planet is selfish? It will only change when we change. We have to want to change, and we have to see the value of changing. It’s in the winter that buds are ready for the spring,

We can gain control over a situation by controlling our reactions. This does not mean that we do not do anything: we can apply wisdom. If we touch a hot iron, we can drop it. If someone calls us names. we can drop it. If our mind is full of chattering thoughts. we can drop them. This does not affect our awareness.

As a fencer, I learnt not to react, but to wait and just watch. Then the instructions would reveal themselves.

If we do not know what to do, at least we are not making the situation worse! There are many people in this world whom we would like to hit on the head with a pillow, but it would do no good…and whom would we leave out?!

However bad the world might seem, we have to start with ourselves first. Knowing who we are – before a reaction – is the sane way. Then maybe we can find an intelligent way to deal with it.

It’s a spooky world

Full of spooks

Spooking those

Who would be spooked!

CLARITY OF MIND v CLARITY OF ESSENCE

Clarity of Mind v Clarity of Essence.

To refine our understanding, we must know the distinction between mind and essence, otherwise we will be constantly caught up in a conceptual mental state. I can’t go too far in this discussion, as it would take a special retreat with a qualified authentic teacher who can give “the pointing out instruction”. Or, we could practise the gradual path of uncovering, which is Vipassana. Here, we are just facing in the right direction!

There is conventional mind, and there is Empty Essence, called Dharmakaya. In the Nyingma tradition, this is referred to as Rigpa (these strange words are for those who wish to look them up. Other traditions have their own names for this.)

A clear mind is not the same as clear essence. It’s part of the process.

Illustration: FLOWER>>>SENSES>>>BRAIN>>>MIND>>>ESSENCE! We are Essence, having a mind, brain, and body. We are not the mind, brain or body – they are our tools. We cannot be what we can see.

When we practice meditation, we usually start with Shamata in some form.

Shamata with support focuses either on the breath, image or sound eg the senses.

This leads to Shamata without support, where we experience the gap of nowness, of stillness and clarity of mind, and has to be experienced before we can move on.

First, we have to be a healthy human being, open and unbiased. In this type of meditation, we are resting in the 6th consciousness of mind* – perception.

However, when dwelling in nowness, we are still trapped in conventional mind. There is subtle “I” dwelling in nowness. There may be no thought, but there is dullness and vacancy.

This is where we upgrade. When this subtle “I”- awareness – looks in on itself, and finds nothing, that is pure awareness. Uncontaminated clarity. That is Rigpa/Empty essence.

The word Rigpa is used to describe empty essence, but this may not be stable yet. It’s a “baby” empty essence, because it gets mixed with conventional mind. That’s why we need to practise letting go. When Rigpa/ Empty Essence is constant, that is Dharmakaya.

This is a very subtle business!

PRACTICE

Practice.

I’ve been hesitating about writing because we are going into realms beyond mere information. For information to become knowledge, we need to practise. When we experience knowledge, wisdom can dawn.

If we do not practise, information could appear irritating, because we find ourselves wanting something more exciting, and our mind thinks, “Oh I’ve heard all this before!” when, in fact, we are talking of refinements.

We have to be aware that we can mix sublime knowledge with conventional knowledge and become confused, and sometimes angry. This is why we need an open mind, together with an open heart.

Good will equals an easy path.

 …and so to practice.

The funny thing about practice is wanting to do something…when it’s merely matter of recognising!

We can get so bound up in the ritual, that recognising our true nature can be forgotten.

We may want things to do, and if we want them, a teacher will give them to us, but in the end it is merely about recognising. And we have to see for ourselves what is of benefit and what to value.

Going to teachings and reading books is not without merit, as they are translations of others’ experiences, which can be of benefit to us. However, we have to remember that they are a commentary and translation of the teachings, and they are not our experience…yet.

We may learn text and phrases to repeat, and they are good reminders, but only a shadow of the actual experience. Recognition of our true nature may then be expressed as direct experience.

I once related an experience to a lama. He said, “We do not express it like that.” He was Tibetan and his translator wasn’t English, and although they were both very learned, English was not their first language. I was thrown by this, and felt I had to fall in line and conform. Conforming as a foundation is excellent, but there comes a time when we have to express exactly in our own way, however unscholastic that may be.

There is a naïve, vulnerable, magical beauty in being uncontrived. Of course, this is not without the dangers of self deception, but within empty essence, everything is allowed to arise and liberate itself. It’s like painting: one can be an excellent draughtsman, but have nothing to say.

This brings us to the difference between clarity of mind and clarity of essence. They aren’t the same thing…to follow!

THE TWO TRUTHS

The Two Truths.

To understand the Dharma – and our existence – we must understand our two sides: relative and ultimate. If it helps to see this a body/mind and spirit, that’s fine. Westerners come some sort of theistic or non-theistic background, which will have a subtle influence on the language they use.

The two truths: one is a projection, and the other the light. One is real, while the other is temporary, and seemingly real. There are many ways to describe this duality. However, we have to understand them separately, to then see them as a unity. One reflects the other. By virtue of one, the other is known. In fact, when they arise and are seen simultaneously, one is the expression of the other. That is when inspiration occurs, as we cannot ignore the projection as it is the basis for our compassion.

This is reflected in our true nature, which is emptiness and awareness.

Emptiness is our ultimate nature.

Awareness is our relative nature. Yes, Awareness! Awareness can be seen two ways, either to create a ‘me,’ or to recognise our essential Buddha nature. Awareness is relative truth (when I first heard this, like other students, I was shocked! On analysis, this makes sense).

When we talk about the “dark side,” we are talking about our self-cherishing – our likes and our dislikes, or our hopes and our fears. There are also the hopes and fears of others around us, which influence us.

To wish to be just in the light and to fear the dark is a mistake. This is still being stuck in a duality, as it creates a separation into extremes. Our true nature is a combination of the two, and therefore non-dualistic.

If we get caught up in thinking, “I am for the good, and ‘they’ are for the bad,” we are living in the projection. Until enlightenment, we will have both natures, the dark and the light. We have to accept this, and this is exactly how we can empathise with, and be compassionate towards all other beings, without exception. Maybe enlightenment still has a dark side to contend with…who knows?!

Too many times, I have witnessed ‘spiritual’ people projecting their light, to mask their dark.

When we can admit our own darkness, we are no longer governed by fear…or by hope. We cannot be ‘outed’ as we have outed ourselves, and so there is nothing to protect! By recognising our negative emotions, the true nature of these emotions will reveal wisdom.

At one level, the two truths have to be seen as separate in order to see them clearly: at a higher level, they are seen as inseparable.

Understanding the inseparability of the two truths is of paramount importance, in order to achieve freedom.

HAPPINESS

Happiness is Rightness.

 The Buddha said,

“Do good.

Do no evil.

Tame the mind.”

Anyone of us could have said this, because of its rightness. If we do no harm, and do what is beneficial for others, without expectations, then we are happy.

This may not always seem to be the case, as we still expect a feeling of happiness to accompany our rightness.

 There many levels of:

“Do good.

Do no evil.

Tame the mind.”

Until we are enlightened, an “I” will attached itself to all deeds.

There is a rightness in that, so be happy!

THE END IS THE BEGINNING

The end is the beginning.

In this blog, everything that needs to be said, has been said! The only point in writing now is to refine understanding. The way of Dzogchen (also known as Maha Ati, the great prefection), as you can see, is to start at the end and end with the beginning- with the four noble truths. Dzogchen points out the essence so you know where you are.

Dzogchen is not a practice. It’s what we are – Empty Essence, Cognisant Nature and unconfined Compassion.

Recognising this goal, it only remains to deal with the obstacles on the path – karma. The Dharma frees us from the chains of karma – karma is our dirty laundry! It needs the soap of method to clean it. Once clean, we need to then wash out the soap – so that we do not cling to the method. That clinging, dear reader, is a huge problem!

There are many paths, or methods, that are all slightly different, and it is easy to talk at cross purposes. We have to respect all paths, and sometimes silence is golden.

In actuality, the Path is our own confusion.

Clear the confusion and the path does not exist…it never did.

It’s a bit like waking from a dream.

Even though this is said to be the Kali Yuga (the age of strife), I believe it is also the age of Sharp Reasoning, which cuts through all the ****!

We are all students and teachers.

We want to find out.

We want to share what we find.

In futile diligence

we find nothing,

so have nothing to share.

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS

The Four Noble Truths.

1.Recognise dissatisfaction.

2. Recognise the cause for that dissatisfaction.

3. Recognise the principles that untie dissatisfaction.

4. Having recognised the principles, watch the snake untie itself.

The Four Noble Truths, in more detail.

1.

Dissatisfaction implies that

we naturally know something.

It’s innate.

2.

We know there is a cause

but are confused about what this is.

We know we are holding onto a mistaken view.

This is the cause of our dissatisfaction.

3.

Knowing we are not clear, we seek clarity.

We need a complete system

to dissolve the obscurations

to that clarity.

4.

When we are convinced, through testing,

that the system is sound,

we resolve to never give up.

SIMPLE BEGINNERS’ BUDDHISM PART FOUR

Simple Beginners’ Buddhism.

Part Four: The fourth Noble Truth – practice.

Well…recognise the value of the first three noble truths, and just do it! Do whatever comes to you.

Once we are convinced that we suffer, and that there is a cause of this suffering, and that there are methods to cut through this suffering, we are half way there!

The title of this Buddhism for Beginners is, “Simple Beginners’ Buddhism. It does not say, “Easy Beginners’ Buddhism”…!

We have a natural longing, an intuitive longing, and that is telling us something. The more we look, the deeper we go…and so the more we look.

SIMPLE BEGINNERS’ BUDDHISM PART THREE

Simple Beginners’ Buddhism.

Part Three: The third Noble Truth – The method to relieve the cause of suffering.

Well…recognise the first two noble truths, suffering and the cause of suffering! There are many methods to help us, and we just have to find what suits our temperament with a combination of; meditation, devotion, compassion, analysis, study and direct pointing out. Basically, the method is anything that cuts through our concepts. Any perception that awakens us to our self-deception.

Generally, we start with an introduction to meditation and why we meditate – finding space and stillness to see what is distracting us. Meditation is about clarity of mind, maintaining a clear view. Much will depend on what comes our way in the form of teachings, dharma centres, teachers, and right company. And our own aspiration!

The basics have been written about in this blog. It is then up to you, to recognise where you are drawn…what tickles your fancy! Our paths will not be exactly the same, as our afflictive emotions will be slightly different to a greater or lesser degree.

There will be a sense of appreciation for this type of knowledge, and so a sense of devotion for the subject will develop. Devotion will see you all the way. Scholastic learning will be a good support, but it is not the actual experience. This leads us on to the fourth noble truth…practice.

SIMPLE BEGINNERS’ BUDDHISM PART TWO

Simple Beginners’ Buddhism.

Part Two: The second Noble Truth

The cause of suffering.

The cause of suffering is an image of ourselves engraved in the mind – a graven image. We have made an idol of ourselves, and hold this up before us as a distorted mirror. This is a created “I” that we cling to, defend and project. This false prophet is also known as ego, and is the very cause of our suffering.

This is easy to see, if we only stand back and realise what we actually are. We are that which sees all this going on, but is obscured.

We are primordial purity, and wisdom free from elaborations – empty, uncontaminated, intelligent space. At some time, this primordial purity became excited about ‘being’. It became attracted to a self image. This created a desire for ornamentation which filled this uncontaminated space, obscuring primordial purity. When our essential essence forgot its true nature, ignorance was born. Space became filled ever since.

Now we constantly maintain this mistaken state, with assistance from the negative emotions. Instead of empty essence expressing itself as compassion, it now expresses itself as selfishness…me.

This ‘me’ now judges everything as real, thus creating hope and fear, and the three poisons are born: Hope, Fear and Ignorance. From these three negative emotions – the main one being Ignorance – we create our world.

SIMPLE BEGINNERS’ BUDDHISM PART ONE

Simple Beginners’ Buddhism.

Part One: The first Noble Truth – recognising  Suffering

I shall keep this very simple. Actually, the simpler it gets, the more profound it gets. Quite often (most of the time) people want more secret and profound complex teachings – the ones that no one else can get – a silly misunderstanding! Buddhism starts with the four noble truths, and until enlightenment, the four noble truths are still what it is all about. There are just refinements on the word ‘suffering’.

Buddhism starts with the four noble truths:

1.Recognising suffering

2.The causes of that suffering.

3.Finding a method that leads away from that suffering.

4.Practising that method that leads away from the causes of suffering.

Of course if we do not feel dissatisfied, then there is no reason to change!

Every single sentient being wants to be happy. No one wants to be unhappy, and we want that happiness to last forever. But, as you can see, sometimes we feel fed up, irritable, or dissatisfied, with a feeling that there has got to be more to life than this. In Buddhism, these feelings come under the heading of suffering.

From an ordinary perspective, suffering is maybe too heavy a word. We may think, “It’s not bad enough to say that I’m suffering!” Well, take it that you are a sentient being having consciousness, but not recognising that consciousness, and so you are suffering. You don’t notice this purely because you have grown so used to it: your mind has convinced itself that the way things are is the only way things are…which is not true.

There is something innate within you that knows, but it cannot recognise itself at the moment, and so we suffer. This ‘something’ is pure awareness, Buddha nature. The problem comes when all those around you are having a great time…so they think! They are still living the dream, whereas this is about you, and how you feel.

This innate feeling is your inner teacher that knows you are already happy, have always been happy, and can never not be happy. You just do not notice it, as your attention gets distracted.

Perhaps the suffering you experience is simply because you want to know more. That’s in part two: the cause of suffering.

LONELINESS

Loneliness.

This may be looked at in two ways: the first is from a relative point of view and the second, from an absolute point of view. From an absolute point of view, we are unique individuals who rub shoulders for a while in this relative state, and then move on. Some of us enjoy isolation, but we cannot ignore those who suffer from loneliness, as they need compassion. To be blunt, compassion isn’t as popular as personal goals nowadays.

Loneliness is becoming an epidemic. It is the feeling of isolation, or separateness. Is this just an outcome of modern life, or is it social engineering on a huge scale? You will have to decide this for yourself.

In general, humans are interdependent beings, living in social communities and sharing work skills. Over time, villages became towns, and towns became cities. Everyone took pride in their work, and those who could not were helped: it was a slower pace of life.

Many inventions and political manipulations have occurred since then, speeding up the separation of people, and so, increasing the effect of loneliness – even though there more communication networks. Strange that! The breakdown within families is vitally important, and is a key to this as it affects childhood and thus, later years.

The first great change was industrialisation. The next great change was digitalisation. The next insidious change was moving production and skills to a cheaper country. This resulted in more profit for the corporations, and cheaper products for people at home to spend their wealth, so giving it back the corporation. As things became cheap, we acquired items we did not need, and so shopping became a hobby/way of life.

Political parties – and the machinery behind them – separate people. Wars do the same. Inventing status symbols has the same effect…the list is endless.

Every change affects the independency and interdependency of this society. People are put out of work, pride in skills are lost, pressure within families to move away. Personal goals are set higher, and the class systems split people further apart, even within the same family. People are encouraged to better themselves…materially!

Could it be that we have been made too dependent, and too soft? If the source of our dependency is cut off, where does it leave us? With even more stress. We can put another word to loneliness – depression. That’s when we are invited to take drugs, and so we become dependent on the corporate chemicals.

People are so desperate to ‘get ahead’ that they lose their empathy for others. In time, each one of us will feel left out, unless we realise our true nature.

Everyone is now dancing to the tune of the large corporation – even governments. Marketing is very a finely tuned science! With surveillance and new ‘SMART’ toys, the corporations know everything about your spending patterns.

So what has this got to do with Loneliness?

People have become more interested in their personal life styles and wealth than in other people! How often does one see groups of youngsters at a coffee bar, heads down, thumbing their ‘SMART’ toy, addicted to superficial social forums?

If you can catch the younger generation, you can control them in later life. Trauma inflicted through a broken family life also have a huge effect later on.

The more one can isolate people, the more they will want ‘SMART’ toys to keep themselves from feeling lonely. Not only have people lost the art of communication and talking face to face, they are using fewer words because of texting. If you lose words, you lose a way of expressing how you feel. That is mind control.

However, this all stems from our own selfishness. Our selfishness is being used against us yet again.

We create our own loneliness by not caring about others. It’s not all our fault, we have just learnt – or been taught – to conform to the corporate standard model. The marketers grade us with targeted advertising!

When we can break out of this social engineering, this social I that we have acquired, and come know our true nature and that of every other sentient being, we will become human again, and not part of the machinery with a bar code.

Start by using your ‘SMART’ toys less. Above all, stop watching TV. All these ‘SMART’ toys are addictive, and pose health risks by producing EMF (Electro Magnetic Frequencies – another big subject). They affect our body and brain!

The world has artificially speeded up through an obsession with trivia. Start being human again, and ask someone, “How are you?” Then listen….listen…listen. Slowing life down, taking time and experience space. If we are too busy, life will just pass us by.

First, we heave to learn to be at one with ourselves (this is the unity of the two truths), and then we can be at one with others. However, let’s not forget that spiritual and religious groups are not outside this system. To become compassionate is challenging, and takes some practise!

Whether you see this is as social engineering or not is up to you.

BEWARE OF BARNUM STATEMENTS

Beware of Barnum statements.

(meaningless phrases to suit everybody)

The Barnum effect, named after the showman PT Barnum, observed that “we’ve got something for everyone,” is the observation that individuals will give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. This effect can provide a partial explanation for the widespread acceptance of some beliefs and practices.

Be aware of what you hear in all media, when people justify their actions, and non-actions.

We have to find the real truth for ourselves, or live by others’ Barnum Statements.

The Buddha said, “Test all my statements, as you would test for pure gold.

Know your own mind!”

BEING AWARE

Being Aware.

 Our being is aware.

The method to know this is: to be aware of awareness, and drop all speculation. At that moment of recognition, there is just awareness, pure awareness. There is no me, being aware: there is just pure awareness. The word pure is translated as Emptiness, or Shunyata in sanskrit. That is our absolute nature. The Awareness is our relative nature, and we can all know awareness quite easily, but we have to look into that awareness in order to realise our absolute essence.

We are pure aware beings, in a temporary body.

Know this, and you will know the nature of everything.

E-MOTIONS

E-motions

First of all, I would like to say how much I truly appreciate all contributions – they are genuinely inspiring, and often leads in an interesting direction.

Yesterday, Rob (Crested Duck) mentioned that he thought we were energy and light within emotions, and he called this E-motions, as in Energy in emotions. This sounded so right and I thought I’d like to try and clarify it a little from the Buddhist point of view.

Before I start, I’d like to quote from a prayer to Manjushri (a Tibetan deity embodying wisdom) that I say every morning:

Lovingly, your supreme knowledge’s light rays fully dispel the dark ignorance of my mind.” Knowledge light rays, is seen as luminosity or clarity or clear light.

As you can see, this mentions light in the darkness: that is the Buddha in the mud. Another way to say “light and energy” would be clarity/emptiness and awareness. These are 2 of the 3 kayas – Dharmakaya and Sambogakaya (the third is *Nirmanakaya which is compassion). Our very nature comprises the 3 kayas…it is what we are, and we could say kayas-emotions. We are Empty essence, Cognisant nature and unconfined Compassion.

So Rob is correct in his analysis, from the Buddhist point of view. Our problem is that we don’t recognise the energy-light and relate everything to a mental image of a self, and therefore compassion and empathy are not present.

This brings us to a very subtle aspect: a genuine “feeling” being obscured by words (even beautiful ones). The Dharma (the teaching of the Buddha) is a vehicle to understand pure experience: it is not the experience itself. Sometimes, we can get so tied up in the meaning of the words, and the precise visualisations that can accompany them, that the actual experience of longing seems to be covered over. That pure experience is the Buddha in the mud.

What we are is beyond words. Of course, this is obvious…it seems one continuously uncovers more understanding of this. Or maybe another veil drops now and again, and we see and experience it more clearly than before.

* Nirmanakaya is the manifestation of the other two kayas, as in teacher: the outer teacher shows us our inner teacher.

KARMA IS GOING ROUND IN CIRCLES

Karma is going round in circles.

(What goes around, comes around)

Do your re-actions get the same re-actions from others? If so, this is karma at work. Most of the time, we don’t notice our particular (and peculiar!) pattern of behaviour and, until enlightenment, we are stuck with it – more or less.

However, when we do notice our repetitive behaviour, something very special and magical happens. It may feel uncomfortable, as it is usually accompanied by an emotion, but if we can just let be for a moment or two, a space occurs in the mind and our reaction takes a back seat…we are released! This moment is recognising the past in the present moment, so giving us the chance to break out of this cycle. It usually comes when we see that our reactions are disturbing someone else.

It’s a blessing! Sometimes a blessing can be painful…noting the pain we are causing can feel sickening.

Every thought, every situation, every response in the present moment is a product of our past: it’s a karmic reaction. If we respond in the same old habitual way, we are stuck in this cyclic existence. The trick is not to feel guilty, as it is only a karmic reaction, an automatic product of the past. If we do not react – no karma is produced!

By simple not re-acting, a gap presents itself, and there is spaciousness to do – or not do. It’s a moment of spontaneity…a spontaneous presence! It’s a magical moment of transformation. We have a choice either to make friends with life in a spontaneous, carefree way, allowing life to unfold (allowing karma to play itself out) or we hold on to our feathered nest, called a social “I” (our status).

A social “I” is one that we acquire through interaction with others: we play a part and come to believe in it. “I’m a teacher.” “I’m a musician.” “ I’m a good person.” Or whatever we desire…

Personally, this is a constant dilemma, of wanting to be at peace with my feathered friends sitting on comfy nests or knowing to trust the urgency of spontaneous presence. It’s like running through a puffin colony with one’s feathers on fire, wondering whether we should be nesting with the others, chattering and arguing and ignoring the pain, or whether we should dive, carefree, off the cliff into the water, with half our feathers gone. Or should we allow ourself to be consumed by the fiery situation because it’s all in our imagination anyway. Or this just me?!

Spontaneous presence is living in trust (it is difficult to find the words here), in a sense of not knowing, not being predictable, but trusting in the knowing itself. Maybe it’s a sense of humility, or renunciation. Maybe it’s grace or blessings. One just stops trying to control the situation, and rests in unconfined compassion.

GROUNDING TO EARTH 3

Grounding to the Earth – balance is the secret of life. These are some quick notes taken from this video. Inflammation = diseases!

I am wondering if grounding helps with meditation, as I meditate better outside grounded…and feel less tired! I now obsess by walking around with an AC volt meter, measuring everything!

“Free electrons from earth produce antioxidants, reduce heart-rate, better sleep, reduced stress hormones – then everything works better, with less pain, less inflammation, less heat. Use patches for healing specific areas: speed healing.

The body knows which white cells to send to damaged areas: that is inflammatory response. This inflammation is a lack of electrons in the tissue. If the body is earthed it will neutralise the free radicals in the damaged area.

Eat less, live longer. Free radicals damage DNA. Ground substance in the body delivers electrons to the body, grounding helps this. The water in our body – conductor of protons. Hydration is important. Most people are dehydrated – in case of a headache, drink a glass of  ‘clean’ water!

Grounding thins the blood. The zeta potential goes up, more charge forcing cells apart, thinning the blood, and so blood pressure drops, so decreasing brain clots and heart disease.

The best grounding is sea water at the beach (that’s why we all like to walk along the beach!)

Electrons come from the sun and affect the earth’s ionosphere, and then come down to the earth via lightning. The body needs these for its immune system.

Grounding counters corporate corruption.”

WE ALL HAVE AGENDAS

We all have agendas.

We all have agendas, fixations, defilements, attitudes, confusions, wounds…this is simply part of being human. It’s important is to acknowledge them, but we don’t have to obsess about them. Be kind to yourself: this is what we have to work with. It’s called the path.

If we try to cover up our negative side, this will only make life worse, for us and those around us. Most people pretend and project a ‘good’ image of themselves: this is just an act we play out, from the script that we wrote. There is no point in criticising such actions, as this will just make people act (react) more. So be generous, because – surprise surprise – we are probably doing the same thing!

The more we open up to what we are doing, the less real it seems. Spiritual progress is acknowledging the intensity of ideas and emotions, and gradually seeing them reduce….and then flare up at times!

The more we hold onto something, the more real it seems, and the more hope and fear are in control. Just practise letting go. In a conversation, practise giving up any sense of winning. Who are we trying to impress anyway? Merely be open and listen. Be a real friend.

There are times when we do have to act out. As parents and friends, we may have to stand firm, when all we want to do is hug! Give what you think you lack.

THE SECRET LIFE OF EMOTIONS IS OUR BUDDHA NATURE

The secret life of emotions is our Buddha nature.

(catch ’em if you can!)

Emotions are re-actions,

revealing our Buddha nature.

Emotions – if acted out – become negative.

In their first instance, they are pure awareness.

Buddha nature.

Emotions have no true existence,

being created by a belief in an I,

turning spontaneous wisdom

into negativity to protect that I,

and trapping wisdom in an illusory existence.

Reality is pure unchanging intelligent space.

Illusion is anything impermanent occupying

that pure unchanging intelligent space.

This is reality caught by illusion.

When Appearances and Emptiness

are recognised simultaneously,

that is non duality.

Knowing one, knows all,

(catch ’em and drop ’em!)
