Lesser Spirits (Demons) Lie In Ambush
Demonic activity in the world comes in many shapes, levels and intensities … and teachings. From the point of view of consciousness, ‘Mara’ – or demonic activity – has nothing to do with external events; it concerns the reactive response in our own mind. Our likes and dislikes which have no reality.
Our lesser spirit lies in ambush, waiting to feed off situations, and so we only have to be aware of reaction in our own mind. Mara activity is absolute teaching!
“Don’t wander, don’t wander, place mindfulness on guard:
Along the road of distraction, Mara lies in ambush.
Mara is this mind, clinging to like and dislike,
So look into the essence of this magic, free from dualistic fixation.
Realise that your mind is unfabricated primal purity.
There is no Buddha elsewhere; look at your own face.
There is nothing else to search for; rest in your own place.
Non-meditation is spontaneous perfection, so capture the royal seat.”
Drubwang Tsoknyi Rinpoche 1st.
Demon: from Latin daemon, from Greek daimōn ‘deity, genius’; also from Latin daemonium ‘lesser or evil spirit’.
