DAKINI TEACHINGS OF PADMASAMBHAVA

Padmasambhava’s final condensed instruction to Dakini Yeshe Tsogyal

from Dakini Teachings, Rangjung Yeshe Publications

[We should continually return to the authentic ancient teachings: please note that content in the [  ] is my – hopefully clarifiying! – commentary]

Lady Tsogyal:
“I beseech you kindly to give me an instruction condensing all teachings into one, which is concise and easy to practise.”

The Great Master replied:
“Devoted one, with faithful and virtuous mind, listen to me.

“Although there are many profound key points of body, rest free and relaxed as you feel comfortable. Everything is included in simply that.

“Although there are many points of speech, such as breath control and mantra recitation, stop speaking and rest like a mute. Everything is included in simply that.

“Although there are many key points of mind, such as concentrating, relaxing, projecting [this could mean yidam deity visualisation], dissolving, and focusing inward, everything is included in simply letting it rest in its natural state, free and easy, without fabrication.

“The mind doesn’t remain quiet in that state. If one wonders, is it nothing – like the haze in the heat of sun [appearing to exist] – it still shimmers and flashes forth. But if one wonders, is it something – it has no colour or shape to identify it, but is utterly empty and completely awake. That is the nature of the mind.

“Having recognised it as such, to become certain about it, that is the view.

To remain undistracted in the state of stillness, without fabrication or fixation, that is the meditation.

In that state, to be free from clinging or attachment, accepting or rejecting, hope or fear, towards any of the experiences of the six senses, that is the action [the action is non-action].

“Whatever doubt or hesitation occurs, supplicate your master [traditionally, this is your root teacher, but it could represent any power that you feel is higher than your own]. Don’t remain in places of ordinary people; practise in seclusion [this is traditionally in a forest or cave, but one can be in seclusion in one’s own room]. Give up your clinging to whatever you are attached to, as well as to whomever you have the strongest bond in this life [one can still have loving kindness], and practise. Like that, although your body remains in human form, your mind is equal to the Buddhas.”

…to be continued…

THE PRECIOUSNESS OF A HUMAN BODY

The preciousness of a human body.

Although we speak about this body and mind being an illusion, it is still very precious and should not be taken for granted. When we think of all the sentient beings (that’s anything that can make a decision) on this planet, how rare we humans are…all seven billion of us! And, this is only one planet in an infinite universe, which includes unlimited beings transmigrating from one body to the next…wow! It is said that there are higher Buddha realms for practice, but we are here so this is what we are dealing with.

What’s so special about being human? Animals are busy finding food, and have no time to visualise, or ask someone else how they are. They are certainly unaware of their inner awareness, although it is there.

Now consider how many humans are aware of their inner awareness…not many! So you, who are reading this, are incredibly fortunate (as am I) for receiving such teachings.

Although we speak about this body and mind as being an illusion, it is still our precious tool to work with, especially at death, when recognising the senses dissolving. We can also be aware of our subtle body within this body, of how the energies move.

If we are open, we are receptors for blessings from the transmitting enlightened ones. Of course we can also receive blessing from the unenlightened ones if we are closed! 🙂

If we waste this chance in this lifetime, who know what our next incarnation will be?

It is said that, every sentient being has been our mother.
We have forget our previous families.
This is incredible logic.
Unfortunately our mothers have forgotten us too.

Therefore compassion, compassion, compassion.

BREAKING THE PROGRAMMING

Breaking the programming.

From childhood, we are bombarded with subtle traumas, even in game play and interactions. Every time we react, this increases our karma. Karma is the result, or imprint, left in the mind, due to our fixations, which acts as a filter through which we see everything. And so, we are self-programmed to continually react the same old way. It’s like a turntable record we keep playing…deepening the grooves.

If we do not change, how are we different from robots, mechanically going about their day?

To break out of this self-programming, we must first be aware of it. This is not at all easy, as whatever we experience seems so real, but is only a result of programming.

Sitting quietly and not following thoughts – just being aware – is the start.

That is what meditation is all about…breaking the programme.

The best prison
is one where we do not realise
we are in a prison.

 The best prison
is one where we enjoy ourselves
but we are still in prison

 The best prison
is the one from which
we have just escaped.

AM I THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE?

Am I the centre of the universe?

When you think about it, life is all about me.
We know this ‘me’ isn’t real, so, no one else’s me is real either.
Are we alone with our projections?

 Yes and no.

 Relatively it’s all about ‘me’
Ultimately it’s all about you.

 That’s love for you!

DHARMA; COMPLEX OR SIMPLE

Dharma; complex or simple.

Un-fabricated naturalness is our being: it is being ordinary – purely being there. That is the key. If we are not being ordinary, we are being something else – complex. Ordinary being is our original state. It is our Ground. Our Path is our complex confusion about being ordinary. The Fruition is realising that this Path of complex confusion is an illusion, and that ordinary Ground has been there all the time.

At the moment we are on the Path, clothed in confusion. All we have to do is undress, if we have the courage.

This is a little difficult to write about, and there is no wish to make anyone feel uncomfortable…well, hardly! Do you see the problem already? If there is something to feel uncomfortable, then that is the issue: this clinging to a complex, confused illusion That seems very real. This uncomfortable feeling is merely the cosy dreamer not wanting to get out of bed!

In spiritual practice in the east, no one stands out: they are all individuals, but ordinary – not quite un-fabricated naturalness, but just ordinary. No one stands out. They have been in the Dharma for centuries with an ordinary, simple upbringing: it is their culture, and their life.

When we see westerners in spiritual practice, they are anything but ordinary. We are very alert, doing the Dharma, trying to get away from the traumas of our upbringing. Our individuality is very important to us. There is no problem with being different: we just have to recognise our natural patterning, and be ourselves and not ego-driven. The Buddha and Jesus both taught compassion, but in different ways.

We all have different capacities and behaviours, and have many reasons for being attracted to the Dharma. All of them are good! I write merely so that we may understand another’s behaviour, and not to feel obliged to copy them. Their wounds are their wounds, and ours wounds are ours.

I sometimes wonder if it is possible to know how someone else feels…precisely. Plus the difficulty of them being able to express how they fell. We all tend to generalise.

I spent years going to teachings, feeling good, going home and waiting for the next retreat. In fact, at some retreat, I’ve heard people say, “Can we just stay on here?” This is attachment to the Dharma: this is entertainment. Precisely because we all come to the Dharma for different reasons, it is difficult to really talk to one another. We learn a special jargon, and beads and protection knots are very important to us. We can get very touchy about our relationship to to the Dharma – it hasn’t become ordinary yet!

When western Buddhist meet, it seems to be better to smile, nod and move on in silence (that’s unless you want to join them in the tea room, name-dropping lamas they’ve met!).

The teaching are about one thing and one thing only: unfabricated naturalness. Nothing else. Of course, this can be worded in different ways, but it always comes down to uncontrived empty essence.

Filling our lives with another’s culture is just changing the coat of samsara. Many Tibetans are brought up in loving families, whereas many westerns are often brought up in trauma. These traumas are what we have to deal with: they are our manure. The beads and protection cords cannot do that for us.

In the west, many Buddhist are middle class, and relatively well-off. To follow the Dharma, we do need money, as courses are not cheap. The intentions of lamas are good, but they have commitments to support many nuns and monks, so you do the maths. And of course they are aware of the fascination westerners have with the exotic. It takes time to be ordinary. It takes time to drop the smugness.

The dharma has to work where we are, it’s what we have to deal with, while interacting with others who were brought up with similar traumas or mental wounds.

Filling one’s shrine with trinkets is well and good, but essentially, it is about the nature of mind, and not what is on the tabletop.

This blog is to enable you to go to Dharma centres and not be swamped by the possibly strange behaviours of others: you have enough problems already! It is all about unfabricated naturalness, and just being you. You do not have to act in any special way, but merely be respectful of others traumas.

They may cover up their traumas
but they are there!
Once we understand the simple,
we can be compassionate to the complex.
Compassion is very challenging.

OVER-STIMULATION

Over-stimulation.

We are embodied beings in an over-simulated environment.

Our whole essence is spiritual. Through ignorance of not recognising our true nature we inhabit a body, with sensitive senses and minds. Somehow we have to balance respect for this relative existence with our absolute nature.

Our senses are not dull, but our brains may be dulled, and this dullness strangely creates overactivity in our minds. Our Essence can never be affected: its natural clarity is always present, only clouded by the contents of our minds.

We are so distracted that the mind is in over-load,  and therefore we are confused and the senses are far too stimulated. This creates obsessions, which is exhausting to the body and mind. The effect of this is that we cannot even think straight!

Desire begets frustration, and so we desire more…that is addiction.

So our sole purpose is to know our true nature – nothing else – accept for genuine compassion for others in the same predicament.

We have to be spiritual engineers
to counter social engineering.
That is what meditation is all about…
…recognition!

.

(It’s interesting how much of our life is spent in ‘media’ speculations.
When I consider it…spiritual practices can also keep us busy, and so we can miss the point completely!)

ADDICTION

Addiction.

 We are all addicts.
This human realm is created by desire.
We find it difficult to get what we want,
so we get frustrated.
That leads to more desire,
which leads to addiction…!

The causes of addiction are the basic building blocks of this universe: attraction, repulsion and inertia. In spiritual terms that is: desire, aversion and ignorance.

To counter this, all we have to do is recognise our true nature which is the exact opposite of these three poisons: Cognisance, Emptiness and Compassion.

You have to be a spiritual engineer to counter
social engineering.
That’s what meditation is all about.

MARA – DEMONS

Mara – Demons

Mara are demonic influences that create obstacles for practice and enlightenment. Mara symbolises one’s own ego-clinging (consciousness-clinging) and preoccupation with the eight worldly concerns:

Attachment to gain, pleasure, praise and fame.
Aversion to loss, pain, blame and bad reputation.

When experiencing bliss, clarity and non-thought in meditation, fixation on these will plant seeds for rebirth in the three realms of desire, form and formless*.

Without fixation on bliss, clarity and non-thought, meditation experiences become adornments of the three Kayas – Dharmakaya, Samboghakaya and Nirmanakaya:

As Ground, they are – essence, nature and expression.
As Path, they are – bliss, clarity and non-thought
As Fruition, they are – three Kayas of Buddhahood.

Ground is our essential nature.
Path is the confusion about that essential nature.
Fruition is recognising the the Path never existed, and the Ground was there all the time.

This is a complicated way of saying,
love without any expectations.
It’s the expectations that are the demons!

Do aliens know that they are in Samsaric realms?”
“Buddha knows!!”

*Three realms:
Desire realm – experiencing human desire, frustration and suffering.

Form realm – a subtle divine state of Samsaric existence between desire and formless realms. Bodies of light without sense organs, living long lives without pain.

Formless realm – the most subtle state of Samsaric existence. Without any physical form at all, lacking even mental pleasure. Unenlightened beings dwelling in unchanging equanimity for a long period, after which they return to lower realms.

THE FOUR TYPES OF SPIRITUAL TEACHERS

The four types of  spiritual teachers.

1. The first teacher is the person who directly points out the essence of your mind.

2.The second teacher is a lineage scriptorial teacher (person or text or manual to study).

3.The third teacher is the inner teacher (the first two reveal the inner teacher: you realise your inner knowledge and wisdom through the experience of meditation/the direct pointing out)

4.The fourth teacher is the symbolic teacher: every situation – the whole of this illusory temporary creation – reflects our true essence.

The first type of teacher becomes your root teacher: it is they who genuinely point out the nature of your mind. When this happens, there is no doubt, and we develop a deep appreciation and devotion.

The second is your lineage teacher, which can be backup, technical information.
There is also another purpose to this, and this is part of Tibetan Vajrayana practice.
One can make supplications to the unbroken lineage, and receive blessings (this, to my
amazement, does work).

The third is your inner teacher, pure perception.

The first two types of teachers enhance and give confidence in realising the inner teacher, which is then realised in meditation.

The fourth is the symbolic teacher, or the outer teacher.

Everyday situations are telling us something – to be more precise, so is every moment.

Karma is constantly being created, reinforced or exhausted.

Once the inner teacher is realised, the outer teacher can be utilised.

We learn how to dance with the relative and absolute worlds.

Everything is seen as the pure world.

This is because everything arises within emptiness.

So everything is a constant reminder – even negative emotions.

The relative reflects the absolute, and the absolute is reflected in the relative.

The emotions are seen as wisdoms, so this life is seen as a pure mandala.

UNDERSTANDING, RECOGNISING AND RESTING

Understanding, Recognising and Resting.

Understanding is knowing.
Recognising is awareness.
Resting is Shunyata (emptiness).

 No doing is involved.
Merely understand, recognise and rest.
In other words, look, see, drop!
The pointing out instruction.

Understanding is knowing the nature of whatever appears – all appearances.

Recognising is re-cognising this nature of all appearances – and that which is aware of all appearances.

Resting is without altering, without modifying, dropping any involvement in appearances, and resting in what is left. Emptiness. Essence. Pure and simple.

So, what we are dealing with is appearances. People are appearances, and, as appearances, all people are our symbolic teachers. Having understood and recognised that their true nature is empty cognisance, devotion arises towards these “teachers”. Compassion also arises for their appearances of mis-understanding, unawareness and restlessness!

I once said to my teacher, “I have compassion for those who say they are happy, and empathy for those who say that they are unhappy.” He agreed, as saying that you are happy is not the same as being happy…

Our re-action toward others is so important. They – and everything else – are the symbolic teacher, the teacher of all phenomena (see the four types of teacher). Every time we react to phenomena, we make it appear real, and so we appear to suffer. This suffering takes us through the six neurotic realms (see the six realms http://www.youtube.com/edit?ns=1&video_id=ZmwQRe5xrvM ).

When we have a proper understanding of appearances, recognition and coming to rest, we remain in our natural state of Shunyata (emptiness). From here, we can help others. Believe me, our reactions to others show us exactly what we are holding on to!

The nature of pure mind:
Emptiness – Dharmakaya
Cognisance – Sambhogakaya
unconfined Compassion- Nirmanakaya

 The nature of neurotic mind.
Dharmakaya – Desire
Sambhogakaya – Aversion
Nirmanakaya – Ignorance

Now we can start to understand and recognise the true nature of the emotions!

(I didn’t intend to write this…it just came out. One needs an authentic teacher to receive the pointing out instruction. The teacher also needs an authentic student!)

DOUBT

Doubt.

 I doubt.
It is not the I that doubts –
there is no I to doubt.
Doubt reveals the confusion.
Doubt is both wise and silly.

With doubt, we know that something is wrong, so that’s good. But let’s be clear here: the I is Truth looking outward and mistaking mind’s reflections for itself.

The moon looked into the puddle
and assumed the reflection to be it’s self…
but wasn’t totally convinced!

Truth has two aspects; awareness and emptiness. If one is recognised without the other…there is our problem. Our eternal problem. It is the awareness without emptiness that is confused, and doubts, precisely because the empty aspect is not present. Conversely, emptiness without awareness leads us into a vacant state.

 Awareness is relative truth.
Emptiness is absolute truth.
Together they are Truth.
Compassion is born of Truth.

 Awareness without Emptiness
is eternalistic– everything is solid and real.
Emptiness without Awareness
is nihilistic – spaced out and pointless.

So, it’s right to doubt, because what is seen has no reality: the reality is in the seeing itself. The recognition of doubt is very important. Why? The moment that awareness is aware of doubt, there is a recognition of recognition taking place.

The moon is stirring in the dream of reflections:
that awareness of recognition looks inward this time,
and finds…nothing…emptiness…wisdom…
Awareness unites with emptiness…non duality!
The moon now sees the true nature of the reflection – and itself.

 Without this recognition,
Truth gets dragged down
into the puddle of doubt,
deeper into the puddle of confusion…

…silly!

TRUTH IS NOTHING ELSE

Truth is nothing else

 Truth looked out
with panoramic vision,
seeing but not looking,
and at peace.

 One day
Truth’s focus narrowed and looked:
simultaneously,
attraction and repulsion were born.
And so, the universe was created.

 Focusing on the universe,
Truth ignored panoramic vision,
and the karmic cloud of forgetfulness descended.

 You are truth.
Nothing else.

I CANNOT SEE THE TRUTH

I cannot see the truth.

It’s Truth that sees an I
where no I exists.
I gets in the way of Truth.
A non-existent I cannot see Truth.

Whenever an emotion arises,
Truth Awakens, and so does an I.
Pride
Jealousy
Fear
Anger
Desire
Either emotions awaken clarity,
or I takes over.

If Truth saw Truth
there would be no
I do, I do.
To I, I is exciting.
To I, Truth is boring.

I expects the Truth to walk on water!

 The truth is,
I will do anything
but see Truth.

Truth is ordinary…
beautifully ordinary…
beautifully boring…
beautifully blessed.

I knows Truth every moment.
It’s watching this screen now!

 Now!

Now!

Now!

Truth is…
I get in the way…

SPIRITUAL INFORMATION AND STUDY

Spiritual information and study.

Study is acquiring teachings, reflecting, experiencing and turning the information into knowledge. Through study, we can join up the dots, and recognise the complete picture of the nature of mind. It goes without saying that meditation is part of this experience. Through this study and meditation, we discover wisdom and non meditation…effortless awareness.

The most profound effect of genuine study and practice is compassion for all sentient beings, as we now understand their true nature, and that of all objects in the universe. That nature is Shunyata – Emptiness!

If we remain at merely gathering information and do not study, we shall also be empty. Empty of genuine experience, empty of wisdom and empty of compassion.

Spiritual teachings are self secret. If they are not received in the right frame of mind, and not practised, then they will not be understood. In fact, they won’t even be heard! We will merely gloss over the words.

The teachings have to be taken to heart, and investigated, as gold is tested for quality. We have to understand the teachings and know the teachings. Listening to teachings and reading books will direct us on the path, but we have to tread that path.

Genuine, authentic relationship with the teachings and the teacher inspires us to also work for the benefit of others – not for recognition or fame, but from genuine concern for their suffering.

Wisdom is hidden in the mud of the mind.
It merely has to be search for,
recognised and washed.

Bodhisattva Vow.

Just as the earth and the other three elements, together with space,
eternally nourish and sustain all beings.

So may I become that source of nourishment and sustenance which
maintains all beings situated throughout space, as long as all
have not attained to peace.

When the Sugatas of former times committed themselves to the
Bodhicitta, they gradually established themselves
in the practice of a Bodhisattva.

So I too commit myself to the Bodhicitta for the welfare of beings
and will gradually establish myself in the practice of a Bodhisattva.

Today my birth has become fruitful; my birth as a human is justified.
Today I am born in the Buddha family; I am now a child of the Buddha.

Now I an determined to perform those acts appropriate to my family;
I will not violate the purity of this faultless noble family.

Just as a blind man wandering about comes upon a jewel in a heap
of refuse, so apparently by chance, the Bodhicitta is born in me.

That supreme amrita destroying death. The inexhaustible hidden
treasure relieving the universal poverty.

The supreme cure for calming the universal ill, the tree which shelter
beings weary of wandering the paths of samsara.

The vehicle for all travellers passing over distress.
The moon of mind which cools the heat of desire.

The great sun dispelling the obscurity of ignorance, the butter made
from churning the milk of the Dharma.

The great happiness for those travellers wandering the path of samara
searching for object of enjoyment.

In the presence of all the Buddhas, I have invited all the Tathagatas
and all beings as my guests.
Devas and Asuras rejoice.

DESERVING TO RULE THE WORLD

Deserving to Rule the World.

I have wondered for some time about the connection between Spirituality and the Rulers of the World, and yes! There is one, and it’s subtle – and ordinary! It seems that they both deal with the same agenda – consciousness. And, there’s a very good reason for this – spiritual knowledge works…but it can be abused, and backfire badly.

It has puzzled me why they do not see this. The only conclusion I can come to is that they do not truly understand what they are dealing with.

We can easily see how our consciousness manipulates situations to get what we want. Q: So what’s the difference between us, and the global elite? A: None. Manipulating consciousness results in lack of empathy, lack of compassion, lack of love…more or less. It’s what we do as sentient beings.

At first glance, we can see that politicians and corporations are the manipulating power in the world. This manipulation is reflected throughout society: it’s our way of life. We may all say we work for the benefit of the world, but this might not include all the beings in it. Samsaric life is all about me.

A banking system was set up to make the world go round – wheeling and dealing for the Rulers of the World. We have all unknowingly consented to this, as we are part of it, and don’t really mind, as we spend our lives in paying for entertainment. We pay to be distracted…and we do a lot of paying…

The question arises, “So why are people suffering so much?” We can leave the spiritual side for a moment, and concentrate on conventional life. We work hard, and then find ourselves in debt, manipulated to buy the corporate goodies and lifestyles.

Is there more to making money than meets the eye? Yes there is, and this is the missing link.

Wealthy people assume that they deserve what they have, to the extent that they lack empathy for others. “Deserve”! That’s the key word: the video at the end of this article will illustrate this.

Once people believe they are ‘better’ than others – more worthy, more deserving (the aim of the class system) – then their boundaries become fixed, into “them” and “us”. Their lack of empathy has become so inbred, that they can actually believe they are elite, and deserve their status. A Sir here, a Lord there, His Highness, and all the other badges for which, sadly, many aspire.

The question then arises, are there levels above this?

The maintenance of wealth and power will be very important to the Rules of the World, to such an extent that they do not care about the effects their actions have. They become amoral, bending rules to suit. Rule by corruption, creating corruption.

There are companies that make soft drinks which are totally unhealthy – in fact, harmful – and make billions from it. The point of this is that…THEY DO NOT CARE…because they think they deserve the wealth. To make this work, the Rulers have to get together, to know whose palms to grease. If this sounds far fetched, just look up the Bilderberg group.

This raises a further question: are there levels even above this? Yes.

At this point I can now relate to them from a spiritual point of view. This is where spiritual light turns black, creating dark knowledge, which results in control through fear. Alistair Crowley was just a showman: he toyed with the occult, which is spiritual knowledge claiming exaggerated powers, and the imagination does the rest.

Knowledge is neutral: it’s what we do with this knowledge that matters.

We can learn about the true nature of mind freely, and then go away and use this knowledge to enhance our spiritual development – or we can use it to make money. Many so-called spiritual people do this.

You may ask, how does one make money out of spirituality? Easy. When you know the frailties of human beings who are controlled by their emotions such as desire and aversion, you can get them to believe anything. It’s easily done, through ignorance and distractions!

The importance of karma and compassion is stressed time and time again in spiritual teachings: there are huge spiritual dangers involved with spiritual knowledge. This bring us to demons/archons/mara. The power-crazed are at the top of the deserving elite…the rulers of the world: their selfishness allows demons/archons/mara to influence them. It makes them feel powerful, and therefore, deserving – the self-perpetuating cycle.

Selfish actions create bad karma,
in that we get what we deserve.
Unfortunately.
It’s all make-believe.

EMOTIONS ARE UNRECOGNISED EXPRESSIONS OF ESSENCE

Emotions are unrecognised expressions of essence.

Essence has three qualities Emptiness, Cognisance and Unlimited Compassion. From this five other qualities manifest as mirror-like wisdom, all-accomplishing wisdom, discerning wisdom, wisdom of equality, and all-encompassing space.

These five qualities are known as the five buddha families, they are the expression of essence. As individuals we have an inclination toward one of these. Each family is linked to a particular emotion, and so a Buddha family has two aspects: wisdom and neurotic. And there lays the beauty of emotions!

When an emotion arises
it is the expression of pure essence.
If recognised the emotion returns to essence.
Then acts through compassion.

 When an emotion arises
it is the expression of pure essence.
If it is unrecognised the emotion explodes
Then acts out of selfishness.

SPACE CANNOT VANISH

Space cannot vanish.

As space cannot vanish
Essence-emptiness
cannot either.

 Within space
anything may be accomplished
within empty essence
anything may arise

 Space is pure.
Empty essence is
all accomplishing purity

was right
“Can’t touch this!”

APPRECIATION TAKES TIME

Appreciation takes time.

When we hear teachings, we can take them for granted, assuming that they will always be freely available to us (by ‘freely’, I mean accessible).

These teaching are the path to enlightenment: they are sound, complete and comprehensive instructions from the Buddhas, the awakened ones. It is said that in this great eon (the Kali Yuga and the other three Yugas are a cycle within a greater cycle) there will be one thousand Buddhas: Buddha Shakyamuni was the fourth.

This, in itself, bodes well for this planet and the sentient beings on it. Hooray! 🙂

These teachings are known as the Dharma, but what is most important of all is the holders of knowledge, the Sangha. Without them, the Buddha’s teachings would not be known. Incidentally, the Dzogchen teachings are very rare: they are meant for a time when there are great emotions, great intelligence and great compassion.

When I first started to repeat the prayer to the three jewels – The Buddha, Dharma and Sangha – I thought it was a polite thing to do. Several decades later, I just have to look around me to realise what life would have been like without them.

I never realised how blind I was. These teachings are sacred, and meant for the spiritual welfare of all sentient beings. The generosity of these masters is inconceivable.

To worldly people, this will make no sense, as they just want to get on with surviving in their clever, make-believe cultures. Everything boils down to expressing loving kindness, and not how clever we are.

The imaginary mind
will always think up imaginary ways to distract itself.

And there will always be those
who will seek to profit from this.

Recognise what is of TRUE value.

PSYCHOLOGY AND PSYCHIATRY

Psychology and Psychiatry

The problem with modern psychology and psychiatry is their attempt to normalise already deluded minds into maintaining their delusion. Both professions are concerned with ‘mental disorders’. The problem is, how do they know what a mental disorder is, and what do they class as normal?

This from wikipedia: These professions are concerned with are people’s perception, attention, cognition, emotion, phenomenology, motivation, brain functioning, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships problems.”

Here we are not talking about brain malfunctions.

In fact, when we look at these definitions, spirituality can answer them all. This shows how society has moved away from the spiritual to the social when it comes to looking at the mind. I’m not talking about religions, but true spirituality not beliefs.

The object of psychology and psychiatry is to engineer people back into society, rather then investigate what they are trying to express, which could be beyond the scope of psychology and psychiatry.

If you are feeling dissatisfied or uneasy about life, it’s not a pill you want. It’s knowledge. And, knowledge is free.

The knowledge comes from recognising and acknowledging one’s authentic experiences – which can seem depressing, when compared to the adverts!

The pill is…knowing that life is going to be depressing – if one believes (swallows) the adverts!

There is a book called ‘Trick and Treat’ by Barry Groves. He has a website called Second Opinion.

Wow!!! He provides technical information about how the ‘Food Industry’ tricks us into eating supposedly healthy food, which actually isn’t. And along come the Pharmaceutical companies to treat us for the results of eating this bad food. Both of them charge us a great deal for this trickery (which brings us back to the subject of advertising). Barry explains how this whole process depletes our immune systems: “People don’t die of natural causes anymore.”

Depressed? You should be depressed! You can do something about it! When the body runs down, we get tired. This affects the mind, and we don’t see straight. Then they call in the psychologists and psychiatrists…

..and you are still paying!
Exercise your choice while you can.

Spiritual knowledge is free.

A WORD OF WARNING

A word of warning.

Padmasambhava said, “Though your view is higher than the sky, keep your deeds finer than barley flour.” He is talking about receiving exalted teachings on the view, but not caring about our conduct.

As Tulku Urgyen said, “Adopt what is virtuous and avoid evil, with respect for the law of cause and effect. Pay attention to the smallest detail. This will keep harmony with the view and conduct.”

If we don’t pay heed to our conduct in life, thinking that it doesn’t matter about our actions, we are fooling ourself. Every time we fool ourself, we will acquire that amount of negative karma.

Of course, ultimately, it is true that there is nothing to do, but this is only true after we have passed through to the other side of understanding: experience and realisation.

To maintain an intellectual understanding, without undergoing training, is a severe misunderstanding. This is how Dzogchen practitioners go astray, ending up with a ‘make-believe’ view, lacking insight.

The view is not something spectacular. It is quite ordinary and simple. Everything genuinely drops away. This brings us back to our conduct. Conduct is merely the continuity of the meditation experience of empty cognisance. And, most importantly…compassion for ourself and others.

This compassion means that we care about others before our own proclamations! Spirituality is a two edged sword: it can cut through our own confused, fixated ego, or it can create more confused fixation by trying to cut through another’s ego…not to mention the bad karma we acquire by this.

We can fall into the trap of having good karma – a charmed life with minor ups and downs – but waste this good karma, exchanging it for bad karma to be experienced in the future. This may be the activity of a Bodhisattva, who does this intentionally and knows and accepts the consequences, but it’s not for us…yet.

 Buddha:

Do good.

Do no evil.

Train the mind.

Tony:
Keep sharp!

DEALING WITH NEGATIVITY

Dealing with negativity.

This is a fundamental, vast and complex subject. It is to do with open-ness and closed-ness – clarity and confusion. There are two aspects to negativity: one is directed at ourselves, and the other, towards others.

Just by being spiritually inclined, we can cause negativity to arise in others, depending on the concepts they hold. Others’ ‘spirituality’ can drive us up the wall! I sometimes wonder whether the “new age agenda” is confusing people.

We are naturally open beings, exhibiting clarity and compassion. However, there are two of us in this mind-body setup: pure being, and an obscuring personality. A red car goes by, and our obscuring personality says, “Oo, there’s a red car!” Pure being already perceives that.

This closing down seems to slip in, just before an emotional flare up is identified, and just after the original wakefulness has reflected something – which is what is meant by openness. This closing is a karmic reaction. Opening has no karma attached.

We are opening and closing all the time. It sometimes feels like the film “Ground Hog Day”… “There I go again!” (there the “I” goes again…)

By recognising all of this, a situation won’t overwhelm us – overtake us – mind control us!

We are going to investigate attracting negativity, ie Demons/Mara/Archons. Throughout history, demons are mentioned: are they real or not? Here we have to use our faculties of experience, inference and trust. Not everything is provable at any one time, and much depends on our capacity… and openness!

We attract both positive and negative energies. We…do…this.

Just observe, when gossiping or finding fault with someone, how it encourages others to do the same. This attracts negative energies – Demons/Mara/Archons. Whether these are external or not, it seems to be part of our psyche – our obscuring personality – so we can see this happening. And, as we are embodied beings, there must be dis-embodied beings who might feel and act the same way. They can get attracted to our negativity and positivity.

(when I say, “must be disembodied beings”, we need to use experience, inference or trust: the test of this is that some situations just feel negative, and we may not know why. This is not to be used as an excuse, but it is something to be aware of).

Positivity is a slippery word. It would be better to say neutrality – just being open. This neutrality is total openness. Positivity can be a little sticky, as we can claim it, creating a duality, and therefore a negativity. Yes, this is complex… 😉

If one is being closed minded, one is attracting further negativity.

If one is being open minded, the demons are still interested – waiting for the oscillation!

If one is being neutral (pure perception) there is nothing to get hold of.

I asked my teacher, “What can I do about mara?” He reply was, “Remain in emptiness.”

I asked my teacher, “What can I do about death?” He reply was, “Remain in emptiness.”

Remaining in emptiness is remaining in pure perception. Nothing can touch you, and there is nothing to fear.

If there are demons, then they are not happy beings. If we look, we can see unhappy demons all around us. So how to deal with this?

People (whoops, I mean demons!) have two aspect to them. Like us, there is a percentage of dark and light…more or less. If we condemn selfish acts (for that is what demonic action are) we merely feed negativity. This does not help people (whoops, I mean demons!). If we praise them, we merely condone and join them. So what to do?

Within our practice, we have to acknowledge them, and allow them space…emptiness. Their ‘light’ side will be attracted and find peace. This is the most compassionate act you can do…just be. Not condemning or praising. Just being. It is a deep, subtle reminder for them and you.

Inner peace cuts through confusion.
Inner peace is emptiness.
Emptiness include everything
and everyone.

Here is an interesting, short video. It’s to do with the illusion of wealth, power and “I deserve it.” Experiments were done at Berkeley showing how the illusion of power and wealth corrupts people, and how they maintain their corruption. It’s how demons work! If we are worldly people, we will wish to hit them – or emulate them. Either way, this contributes to Demon/Archon/Mara activity. See how it works?

It is in the seeing (awareness) that liberation is possible.
In the moment of seeing, awareness is self liberated.

In the moment of self liberating awareness,
the cosmic joke arises:
our belief that the thing we hold dear is real….me!
“I am.”
The greatest joke 🙂

There is much humour in holding on to that which we have to lose.

Who guards the guards?

WHO GUARDS THE GUARDS?

High level surveillance is being used to spy on the ‘guards’ who spy on us. Why? There is only one reason: blackmail. Blackmail is the control mechanism to keep people in their place – to maintain secrecy.

As John F Kennedy said, “The very word secrecy is repugnant in a free and open society…” and then he was assassinated. Why?

Who is it who does not want the public to know what is going on? There seems to be a pyramid structure, so that only a few know the game being played. The question is, how long has this been going on?

We as humans are unaware of what we are being told to do and think, day in and day out. If humans knew their true spiritual nature, they would not conform to these corporate standards, and put themselves in debt…to them!

LOOKING FOR A HIGHER SELF

Looking for a Higher Self.

The truth is at the beginning, middle and the end. There are many levels, each using the same words, but the meaning changes – perception refines – the cloud clears. Truth shines though all the layers – the same light, just different intensities.

We can say that obstacles do not exist, but the untrained will still stumble. That is what compassion is all about: help in transcending the levels.

The answer is always in the question.

Sometimes people talk about a higher self, or that realisation is a million miles away (I actually said that to one of my teachers).

It’s not a matter of going “higher and higher”: It’s a matter of losing the confusion, and clarity revealing itself. As the Buddha said, “We are only losing that to which we cling.” Or as Michelangelo explained, “I saw the figure within the marble: all I did was remove the waste.” We can easily see what we are holding on to when we observe our reactions.

It’s not a matter of who is right: we all use different language to express ourselves. The answer being found in the question applies to any spiritual question – the answer is to enquire who is asking the question. That which asks the question is the answer. It is that which is aware of the question that is the answer!

An example, taking the question, “What should I be doing?” There are 2 parts to the answer: one is just to be aware of that which is asking the question. At the heart of that is essence, and merely has to be recognised through clarity.

The second part is that, whatever arises in our life is karmically produced from the past and if we react, we only deepen our karma…we are re-enacting! But in the moment of recognising that this situation is a product from the past, no karma is produced. It is karmically neutral, as the karma is in our reactions. It’s not what occurs in life that produces karma: it is our reaction to those events.

The second part of the path to enlightenment is exhausting all karma – purification.

TIME AND SPACE

Time and space.

From an absolute point of view, time does not exist. It only relates to things that change, and space cannot be said to exist or not exist

Here we are going to talk about relative time and space. The two aspects of life that are most valuable are time to be, and space, a place to be. Wealth is the power that enables us to arrive at those two conditions – to have time and space – especially if we are a spiritual practitioner. Spiritual practitioners are a very rare breed.

Being a spiritual practitioner means that is our utmost view of life, which includes compassion for others. A spiritual practitioner respects the material world, but is not so involved in it.

One needs time and space to reflect and meditate. Whatever others choose to do with their life is up to them. We may be a hundred lifetimes away from enlightenment, or this could be our last one, so why waste time and space on the mundane?

“Well, what about all those sentient beings suffering? Are you going to just leave them?”

“Before we can help anyone, we have to be stable in our own being.”

A bodhisattva is someone who says from the depth of his or her heart, “I want to be liberated and find ways to overcome all the problems of the world. I want to help all my fellow beings to do likewise.

I long to attain the highest state of everlasting peace and happiness, in which all suffering has ceased, and I want to do so for myself and for all sentient beings.”

According to the Buddha’s teaching, anyone who makes this firm and heartfelt commitment is a bodhisattva.

We become bodhisattvas from the moment we have this vast and open heart, called bodhichitta, the mind bent on bringing lasting happiness to all sentient beings.
Buddhist literature defines three types of bodhisattvas: the king-like bodhisattva, the captain-like bodhisattva, and the shepherd-like bodhisattva.

King-like: “First, I want to free myself from samsara and attain perfect enlightenment. As soon as I have reached buddhahood, I will help all other sentient beings to become buddhas as well.

Captain-like: “I would like to become a buddha, and I will take all other sentient beings along with me so that we reach enlightenment together.”

Shepherd-like: “I want to help all sentient beings to reach enlightenment and see the truth. Only when this is achieved and samsara is emptied will I become a buddha myself.”

CONSCIOUSNESS

Consciousness.

This is a very tricky subject. It’s a word that can have different meanings, depending who is using it. Some people may use the word ‘consciousness’ to mean our absolute nature, whereas others may use this word as a faculty of mind.

Of course, it will mean what the person intends it to mean, in context. So if someone says, “I am consciousness having an experience,” that may be how it feels to that person, which all well and good.

However, if others just repeat that phrase, they may not have the same understanding. It is like an artist going out to paint a scene: their picture will be an image of an image. If someone then copies that artist’s painting (without looking at the original scene), then they will create an image, of an image, of an image. It will not be what was originally seen.

This is really tricky, as we all fall for repeating others’ words, without the experience. All we have to do is look for ourselves.

Lets consider the statement, “I am consciousness having an experience,” from a Buddhist perspective (this is one of the reasons I like Buddhism, as it can take everything apart and see what is actually left! 🙂 ).

So, “I am empty essence (consciousness) having an experience.”

This statement is sort of true. But what is actually happening is that we are indeed empty essence…but…we are caught up in experience! We believe it to be real. If we are truly empty essence, there would only be experience, and not the having of an experience. If we are having an experience, we are caught up in the illusion. Having an experience is a duality: we are trapped in relative truth, and not ultimate truth.

In the pure experience of absolute truth, there is nothing happening. Nothing but pure awareness.

As I said, it’s a tricky subject, and needs much reflection.

From a Buddhist point of view, there are eight consciousnesses – five of the senses and three of mind. Below is a link to a previous article about the eight consciousnesses which illustrates that “I am consciousness just having an experience,” is the eighth consciousness: this is nearly essence, but not quite. The eighth consciousness is still a relative truth.

Of course, this is up to you to decide.

In philosophy, we can argue about this and that,
but in meditational experience, there is no this and that.
There is only pure awareness.
Its expression is compassion…unlimited compassion.

Buddha: “You only lose what you are holding on to.”

ALIENS FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION

Aliens from another dimension.

It’s us!
We are not what we seem to be.
We are not of this physical dimension.

 Awareness is the bridge
between this limited dimension
and beyond.

 This awareness travels
the universe
looking for its home.

Finally, awareness looks in on itself,
recognises emptiness,
and finds home.

 Emptiness is essence,
beyond any dimension.
That’s absolute reality.

THE BUDDHA WAS WRONG

The Buddha was wrong.

The Buddha was wrong. Laugh…….!
The Buddha only teaches about suffering. Laugh…….!
I know more than the Buddha. Laugh…….!

Is the Buddha wrong? Or is it our misunderstanding?
The Buddha only taught the cessation of suffering.

If you know more than the Buddha’s forty years of teachings, where millions of people have followed his path of compassion for 2,500 years – please explain.

Apart from his profundity, the Buddha tells the best jokes… …at least they’ll make you smile!

You only lose what you cling to.”

EXPECTING MEDITATION TO GET BETTER

Expecting meditation to get better.

We expect meditation to get better,
but find nothing happening
and get disheartened.

We hear all sort of stories about meditation
but nothing happens to us.
We just sit.
And nothing happens.

We see all the thoughts and emotions:
in fact, we see very clearly.
But nothing happens to us.

 Realisation is seeing clearly.
Do you see it?
It’s clarity!

 Nothing happens but clarity.
It’s simplicity itself.

DO NOT BE IN AWE OF THE DHARMA

Do not be in awe of the Dharma.

Do not be in awe of the Dharma.
Don’t make Dharma separate from you.
You are Dzogchen*.

 Demons and the Dharma
are the path and the obstacle…
…and the inspiration…
to get to reality’s shore.

 We arrive when we express
genuine warmth.

Everyone’s expression is our teacher.

Demons are that which separate us from our true nature. Demons are our concepts. The only obstacle standing in our way to enlightenment is our concepts. Their presence reveals the Path – our confusion. And so, they inspire!

The Dharma is the teachings about our true nature. It is the theory. Being in awe of the theory can create concepts, and therefore separates us from our true nature, making the Dharma an obstacle – extending the Path of confusion!

So you can see how the demons and Dharma can be both an inspiration and an obstacle.

Dzogchen is what we are – cognisant nature, empty essence and uncontrived compassion. It is the very essence of the teachings. It is not a theoretical practice: it directly cuts through all concepts/ obstacles. All we have to do is recognise. The hallmark of realisation is compassion, expressing genuine, fearless warmth…love!

*In the Tibetan Nyingma tradition, Dzogchen is just a name for the teachings on our essential nature, which is called Rigpa. Other tradition give it other names.

Understanding the West today.

To understand the western world, and the psychology behind it, there are two books to read: George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldus Huxley’s Brave New World.

These two men were members of the Fabian society, so these are not just stories. Orwell’s is a violent approach, while Huxley’s is a drugs-media approach. They are either warnings or blueprints!

These are two old films of poor quality, but one can down load the books quite easily.

The importance of this is because we see more surveillance, control, wars, and corporation influence than ever, in the world. And, a definite dumbing down of the population.

Though we appear to have more freedom and choice, it is still an illusion. It’s all about conformity, and limiting expression.

This is part 1 of an audio book from youtube.

NOTE:

The British Security Industry Authority (BSIA) estimated there are up to 5.9 million closed-circuit television cameras in the country, including 750,000 in “sensitive locations” such as schools, hospitals and care homes.

The survey’s maximum estimate works out at one for every 11 people in the UK, although the BSIA said the most likely figure was 4.9 million cameras in total, or one for every 14 people.

Both projections were higher than previous estimates which ranged between 1.5 million and four million.

DON’T BE SO BUDDHIST

Don’t be so Buddhist.

Don’t be so Buddhist.
Be yourself.
Be relaxed.
You don’t have to be like anyone else.
It’s not about acting a certain way.

It’s about deepening our understanding.
Being relaxed about being ourselves and expressing love.

THERE IS NO BAD MEDITATION

There is no bad meditation.

When cognisant emptiness is recognised, there is no bad meditation: everything that arises is within emptiness.

 “I can’t meditate!”

“Why is that?”

“Too many thoughts.”

“But you are aware of the thoughts, right?”

“Of course!”

“So there is awareness.”

“Yes.”

“Are you aware of awareness now?”

“Er…yes, but so what?”

“In that very moment of being aware of awareness, there is a knowing quality. Not that anything is known. Just a recognition of knowing. It is the opposite of not knowing – being vacant.”

“I can see that, but what about all those thoughts?”

“In that very moment of being aware of awareness, there is nothing happening. It is un-fabricated awareness. It is empty of any elaborations or contrivances. That pure awareness is essence.”

“Hmm..I’ll have to think about that.”

“That is precisely what not to do! Leave it be.”

“Hmm…?…!”

“In that empty essence, everything is allowed to arise, and if we do not hold on to whatever arises…it comes to pass.”

“I just watch it?”

“The watching is still doing something. It is still creating a duality – me and the thought. Merely recognise, and let go.”

“So I don’t stop the thoughts?”

“They go by themselves. They also arise by themselves, as products from the past. I get snippets of tunes in my head, but merely recognise awareness, and let be. Thoughts return. Re-recognise. Let be. Gradually, empty space expands, allowing anything to arise. To come and go, without interference.”

“Sounds simple enough. So why am I having so much trouble?”

“We get into a habit of believing that the thoughts are us.”

“But I’ve worked hard at acquiring all my knowledge. It makes me what I am.”

“Knowledge is okay! It’s the clinging to them that cause the problem as it creates a mistaken self-identity.”

“Can I trust what you are saying?”

“You are trusting your own awareness. That is your teacher.”

“Is that all?”

“There are refinements, but that will do for now.”

“So meditation is just becoming familiar with awareness. Whatever happens, happens and goes. It’s sounds like meditation for a lazy person, who doesn’t want to do anything!”

“Absolutely!”

THE JOY OF DISCOVERING AN UNTRUTH

The joy of discovering an untruth.

The only thing better than discovering truth,
is discovering an untruth.

Personal opinions are accompanied by self interest.
Truth is accompanied by compassion.

As scientists we are happy to eliminate
what is untrue,
to find the truth.

As spiritual seekers we are happy to eliminate
our pretence of compassion
to find compassion.

In meditation we gain nothing,
but lose
confusion, aggression and clinging.
Above self interest.

THE ALIEN QUESTION

The Alien Question.

We experience what we believe.
We believe what we experience.
We believe what we believe.
What we believe, we become…
…and the mind can be Photoshopped!

We are all aliens: embodied sentient beings. If we recognise that we are not this body or mind, then it’s possible to understand re-incarnation (I recognise that many do not believe this, but that discussion is for another day). We re-incarnate because our misguided mind identifies with a self concept, which we maintain moment to moment. This habitual self-programming drives us to choose an incarnation that ornaments our beliefs. Until we do realise our true nature, we are all aliens wandering the universe, looking for the truth. That, in itself, is a foolish thing we do!

We hear many accounts of meetings with aliens: whether you believe them or not is up to you.

What we are talking about here is ‘beings’ arriving in space ships, or living underground in tunnels, who are said to contact humans. Merely saying, “I have met aliens,” does not make it true. I may meet you in the street, but that is an illusion of me meeting an illusion of you…it is an experience taking place in the mind. All experiences take place in the mind: that is where everything is perceived – and that perception can be altered…Photoshopped…by beliefs.

If you believe you see aliens – you will see aliens.
If you believe you see ordinary people – you will see ordinary people.
If you believe you see Buddhas – you will see Buddhas.

Remember: it all depends on what we call ‘true’ or ‘real’!

The descriptions of these meetings with aliens are somewhat strange in that…they are not strange! They are mundane, and totally irrelevant to higher understanding. Again, remember that all experiences take place in the mind – that is so important here.

Yes, it possible that ‘aliens’ are here, but until it happens to us, we will never know. The claims that these beings have a higher intelligence begs a question about the type of person contacted. As we have been mistaken sentient beings wandering the universe for eons, it is said that every sentient being has been our mother. So we too have been these aliens at some time.

When people talk about aliens with higher intelligence, are they offering wisdom or something else?

Even if there are aliens, they are sentient like us. That’s all. Even if they come from ‘another’ dimension, it is still a dimension. That’s all. Essence is beyond any dimension or place.

Humans have been touched by enlightened masters for thousands of years: enlightenment is our potential. When “contactees” tell of their experiences, the aliens seem to be only interested in “toys”. It does bring into question their so-called higher intelligence!

Getting caught up in alien fantasies is only another projection in our minds, as are all ideas. It’s a sort of mind control, and it’s a bit fishy! All appearances are expressions of emptiness. Don’t aliens know this?!

If believing in aliens benefits your life, all well and good. If it distracts and causes stress in the mind, drop it, and get on with recognising what reality is.

Life is short.
At death it is said we have an awareness
nines time that of being in a body.
In an instant
our mind can take us anywhere.

And there’s the problem.
No stability.
Off with the fairies,
or something worse.

Know that all appearances
are but projections of the mind
…phantoms…!

If aliens excite
you will merely join
the other wandering aliens
…or demons…!

 What we believe, we become.

(We hear about secret ‘Black Operations’ where aliens work with humans using alien technology: this may or may not be true. However, the idea of this does have an effect on people’s minds. Remember – the mind can be controlled…Essence cannot. This is why spiritual practice is so important.

If there are indeed aliens working in ‘Black Ops,’ then this is only concerned with controlling matter and minds – and not wisdom. From a spiritual perspective these are just toys! And again, if we are talking about controlling minds, there are those believers in the Occult to add to the mixture…even more toys!

Either way none of this is reality. Believers are only playing with a seeming reality – relative truth. It’s like Photoshopping the mind: anything on a computer comprises of pixels…and pixels can be mucked around with – as can our perceptions in the mind!

Absolute truth cannot be mucked around with. It can only be distracted. This is exactly what is going on. Know the difference between the real and the seemingly real. Be careful of becoming a toy!)

In meditation we gain nothing.
We merely lose
our fear, confusion, self
and beliefs.

STILL PUTTING ‘THINGS’ OFF?

Still putting ‘things’ off?

A man called Longchen Rabjam meditated for many years, under an overhang in a cliff in the mountains. He only had a hemp-cloth sack as clothing and bedding. Every day, when he went to urinate, he’d have to pass a thorn bush, which over the years grew larger and larger, making it uncomfortable to pass…the bush, not the urine!

Every day he’d think, “I should cut that down.” Then he’d think, “This could be my last day. Why waste time pruning a bush? I’d rather do something of real significance.” So he’d go back to his practice sessions. And of course, he became the great realised master Longchenpa.

Nowadays, we have preliminary practices to purify our negative karma and remove obstacles (thorny bushes) that we have created. It all depends on how much we want to realise ourselves! The preliminary practices help keep us focused, as they have to be completed. They are the real foundation for cutting through our conceptual lazy monkey mind. If you have to do 4 x 111,111,111 practices, you really do have to keep going! They are known as the ‘Ngondro’. We all need a bit of a bootcamp – of some sort – to become spiritual warriors.

One could say that our bad karma is our bootcamp, with all the situations it throws up, and our reactions to these. However, that is exactly what we have been dealing with for eons, and so a positive approach is beneficial.

And a little panic is not a bad thing…

Some days, we just don’t feel like practising. Too sick, too sleepy, too fed up, too busy, too anything… We have to realise that whatever occurs, awareness is still present. That is how we mingle daily activity and practice. If we are aware of awareness, we can be aware of essence!

The important thing is not to give up…that’s a bad habit. Yes, let go. But don’t give up! If we feel like giving up because we can’t be bothered, or because our practice place is not quite perfect, then just think what it will be like at the time of death!

Be a tenacious as a dog trying to find where its favourite bone is buried! Tenacity cuts through concepts and energises.

Of course there are bad things going on in the world.

Remember.
Life is short.
There will always be bad things going on.
We can run around
finding more and more distractions
– our thorn bushes –
or we can concentrate and recognise our next step.

An added consideration: many people don’t wish to do the Ngondro, but also don’t wish to continue their suffering. So what to do? There may be one thing that is predominant in one’s life that seems to be an obstacle. It could be dealing with other people, a feeling of grumpiness about life, a sense of pointlessness…in fact, any of the emotions.

Merely bring that feeling to the fore.
Be aware of it.
Admit it to yourself.
And in any situation, recognise the effect it’s having on you.
Don’t feel guilty.
Allow it to be.
Give it space.
In doing so, its grip over your mind will slacken because of awareness.
All you have to do is recognise.
It will be uncomfortable:
just re-recognise and let be.
Know the thorn bush to be impermanent.

Not all conspiracies are theories.

This shocked me.

There are two types of people is this world – those who know and those who do not. Of course it all depends on what they think they know…!

This video is about the death of Michael Hastings. Whether his death was an accident or not I do not know, but this video reveals some strange technologies which are used to ‘control’ situations from afar.

If you still think that conspiracies are just theories, listen to this video at 31.00 to 33.00 minutes, by Dr Kathleen Fisher, Darpa project manager.

Why would anyone want to use invent and use such technology? And, how often is it used…?

(DARPA) The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technologies for use by the military. DARPA has been responsible for funding the development of many technologies which have had a major effect on the world, including computer networking, as well as NLS, which was both the first hypertext system, and an important precursor to the contemporary ubiquitous graphical user interface.

This an update on this “accident’!

WHAT CREATED DELUSION?

What created delusion?

Our present moment of delusion
is created by the previous moment of delusion.
That how it works.
It becomes a pattern of behaviour – a personality

We are deluded about our true nature.
Once we recognise our delusion, the delusion stops.
This delusion is maintained
by constantly being distracted by our self-delusion.

Can we stop this?
Yes, by recognising.

When knowing is present,
not knowing instantly disappears!

ARE WE ALL HYPNOTISED?

Are we are all hypnotised?

Perhaps we are all hypnotised? Self hypnotised? And, perhaps meditation is the way out of this trance, if viewed properly with true compassion. Taking anything seriously only deepens the trance.

Ignorance of the true qualities of our being created the karma that drove us into human bodies. Actually, that was good karma: other beings are self-hypnotised into being animals – we’ve all been there, done that, forgotten! Actually, thinking about it and looking at the state of the world, animals treat each other better than some humans!

Hypnosis* is believing something to be other than what it actually is. It is said that we live in an illusory dream, so what’s the difference? The difference is that in the maintenance of this hypnotic state, we can see what is going on: it is not like a vague dream at all.

Our whole lifestyle – everything in which we engage – enhances the hypnotic effect, and spiritual practices are no different. We must always be aware, and not locked in.

I’m reminded of a story about a large group of people travelling for generations in a space ship, to a distant galaxy they had been told about. They ritually maintained the ship, but gradually forgot where they were going. In fact, the ship became their entire world, and nothing else existed. Every day, they’d religiously oil the parts, and worship a picture of a tree. They had totally forgotten that they were going anywhere, and found themselves creating fears and making up new rules.

This brings us to understanding the mechanical mind and spontaneous mind. In the mechanical mind, we do this and this, because we have been told to do this and this. We have been programmed. To understand this, read Aldus Huxley’s “Brave New World”. It’s about a society that, from cradle to grave, is indoctrinated through the media and drugs to love its servitude – programming.

In spontaneous mind there are no boundaries. It’s a sort of joyous, sad place, full of loving compassion…and a little challenging! We liberate ourselves by being aware, looking into that awareness and finding pure knowing. Once that is known, the nature of everything is known, and we are no long in the trance of not-knowing. This doesn’t mean we are enlightened yet: there is still the laundry to clean!

Be aware of ‘being’ caught up in dogma and losing compassion.
On Dharma forums, you’ll see them arguing,
losing sight of warmth and compassion
for the desire to be right.

Just like the space travellers,
worshipping the tree
and not knowing what a tree is.

Liberating enlightenment is the most natural state of all.
The natural outcome of this liberation is compassion.

.

* Encyclopedia Britannica is “a special psychological state with certain physiological attributes, resembling sleep only superficially and marked by a functioning of the individual at a level of awareness other than the ordinary conscious state.” One theory suggests that hypnosis is a mental state, while another theory links hypnosis to imaginative role-enactment.

THE FOUR MIND CHANGES

The four mind changes.

 Preciousness of human body
Impermanence and mortality
Consequences of actions
The negative characteristics of social existence

It is not beyond our understanding to see how precious life is, and that everything is impermanent. It is not beyond our intelligence to realise that there are consequences to our actions, and that the search for lasting happiness in a material world will never be satisfying.

Reflecting on these four mind changes is the mechanism to change our limited view, with its constant ups and downs. When we start to understand how our fixated ideas are limiting our experience, we may begin to wonder who we are and what on earth are we doing here. We may have considered these questions when we were younger, but we learned to conform, to fit into a social lifestyle: we may secretly resent this.

The problem lies in our sense of value. We pontificate down the pub, tell anyone that who’s listening how cultured we are, gossip about a friend or talk about a film we have seen, rather than consider the real meaning of life.

If one mentions anything like the four mind changes to ‘normal’ human beings, they’ll say, “Oh, that’s deep!” and excuse themselves to find the nearest toilet. Do you have that effect on people as well?!

How did we get to a state of avoiding that which is truly valuable, and the meaning of life?

It is understandable that we may want to project and defend our precious ego, but it is inconceivable that we can spend our lives talking about trivia as if it was important, when we may regret that wasted time at the end of our life. But that is what we actually do…our whole lives.

At the recent funeral of a close relative, it was said, “So-and-so was a member of a club, and went on cruises.” The deceased being referred to was my Dad. A week before he died, I asked him, “What do you think of your life?” He said, “Resentment.”

The Top Five Regrets of the Dying

This is from Bonnie Ware’s memoirs.

For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.

People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. I learnt never to underestimate someone’s capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five:

 1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.

 2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

 3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

BUDDHA ESSENCE IN A NUTSHELL

Buddha Essence in a Nutshell
and we’re the nuts…

Our true nature is awareness, pure awareness. That’s what we are! However, most of the time, we are something else: occupied, vacant or asleep. And so we are not aware of awareness. We are only aware of something outside ourselves. We are mainly distracted by clinging to images in the mind, and thereby clinging to an image of ourself which we have acquired: a generated “I”.

The recognition of pure awareness is called Rigpa: it is the Dzogchen practice of the Tibetan Nyingma tradition. It is not really something that one practises: it is merely recognition of awareness, and in looking at that awareness ‘no thing’ is found. That non-finding is emptiness – your essence – pure awareness.

 It’s that simple.

So what’s the problem? Well, we have spent eons either occupied, vacant or asleep, and it has become bit of a habit. So we need methods to cut through these evil habits 😉 That’s all! Evil is only our consciousness (that’s mind activity) clinging to likes and dislikes, because it is ignorant of its true nature. That’s all!

We start by being relaxed about……..everything…….as every thing has no permanent, true existence of its own. Things are created by causes and conditions. They dwell for a while, and then dissolve. Every thing only seems to be real.

The first step is recognising awareness: then we start to wake up. This happens when we recognise that we are suffering, dissatisfied with the illusory dream of being either occupied, vacant or asleep.

The only reality is our pure awareness, which is never born and never dies.

Dharma is cutting through the illusion we currently live in. Whether this illusion is nice or horrid, it is still an impermanent state. If a thing is real, it can never not be real. The only reality is that which is constant – our pure awareness.

Oh, and there is a bonus! When pure awareness is recognised…you can’t help loving. Compassion naturally arises.

This is so simple. In fact, it is our origin. It is being ordinary. So if this is ordinary, what on earth are we doing all the time?! Playing with whistles and bells and buttons and bows… 😉

NEVER, EVER GET ANGRY

Never, ever get angry.
Feel it, but don’t become it.
Know there are those who feed off it.
War is profitable.

Because of events happening in the world, it is important to understand the connection between these happenings and our true nature. That bit in between is consciousness – what is going on in the mind.

Anger is caused by reacting to external events. How we respond will either liberate our karma or create more.

Although, in absolute terms, anger is mirror-like wisdom – the first instance of clarity reflecting everything as it is – in relative terms, if anger is held onto, it clouds clarity and we re-act according to our karma.

In the ‘normal’ run of things, if we dislike something we get angry (even subtle dislike is anger, which can turn to hatred), and so we react creating stress in ourselves and those around us. This is the present state of the world: in the Kali Yuga, we over-react.

If there is dislike, there is also like. So if we don’t get what we like, we dislike…therefore we get angry. Consciousness becomes subtly confused. Everything in this universe is based on attraction, repulsion or inertia (ignorance).

We think that we are free-willed people, but practically everything in our home is connected to a corporation. We liked it, so we bought it. This is how the corporations work, getting you to want or need something. In a fair world this is acceptable, however…!?

Corporations are so global that they have a tremendous amount of power and have to keep us buying – spending our wealth. Corporations are powerful entities: they keep the world going round…that’s busy-ness for them and us! We are all involved somehow, playing our part. Just look at the amount of surveillance going on in our personal lives.

So, if this world is run by huge corporations, they will never want the public to think clearly about what is being done to them… “Buy more! Want more! Expect more! Live the dream!”

We know that corporations can influence political parties, and finance them, therefore having control over governments.

All this is easy to see, and we have got used to this way of life…haven’t we? When we consider the power and size of corporations, we start to see how this power is used politically. Although this is all in the name of profit, obsession now takes a hand, and the phrase “NewWorld Order” comes to mind…

We now find the world pushed into austerity. The cycle of boom and bust is at work, and we can no longer afford to “Buy more! Want more! Expect more! Live the Dream!” And so, people become stressed and angry.

What if this was done on purpose?
What if consciousness was being toyed with?
Is the world being run by social engineering?

We see things swinging to the left and then to the right.
Are political parties actually working together in a charade?

Is it possible that this world is run for profit on a huge scale?
Are people being used as ‘cash cows,’ ‘cash slaves’ and ‘debt slaves’?

This alone could make us angry, but what if there is another ingredient added to the mix?

What if the emotions were being enhanced? The most powerful of these is anger, and this takes us back to …“never want the public to think clearly about what is being done to them.” Distraction is needed.

The media, in all its forms, is hellbent in getting us to react. Incidences portrayed on the news and videos, triggering a response. All over the world, we see protests by angry people, treated heavy handedly by authorities, making people even more angry! Engineered austerity is squeezing poor people even further. They want us to get angry!

Anger is the outcome of fear/aversion. Its opposite is desire/attraction. When we don’t get what we desire…we get angry. See how it works? No, we don’t!

The third aspect to this equation is ignorance – not knowing.

We can get angry, without knowing what the real cause is. In spiritual terms, this anger relates to an “I”. In worldly terms, this “I” is being enhanced by marketeers to make you a better you! What you are now is unworthy! You must better yourself and show it off to the world! That is the vicious cycle of existence: samsara.

The hidden agenda is subtle childhood trauma. Putting pressure on children puts pressure on parents, which develops throughout the next generation or two. See how it works now?

 Being caught in anger,
we lose our sanity.
Being caught in anger,
we lose natural our intelligence, empathy and compassion.

Vajra Master!

This Moe Norman, the world’s little known greatest golfer. He is a little difficult to hear as he talks fast, but wow… listen very closely…what wisdom!

Some teachers have a gentle style, Moe is kind of wrathful.

Forget golf, “To thine own self be true.”

(This ‘magic’ is within all of us!)

KNOW THE NATURE OF YOUR MIND

Know the nature of your mind.

Resolve the nature of your mind.
Don’t resolve the characteristics of all the teachings…
…life is too short!

The path we follow will dictate the time taken
to reach complete enlightenment…
…we can actually choose to waste time!

Samsaric existence is an ocean of suffering,
never an ocean of bliss.
If someone says that life is not suffering,
they are truly deluded and blind…
…bliss is this realisation!

Know your spiritual inclination:
a teaching can inspire or hinder.
Don’t dwell in other’s limitations.
Keep company with pure perception…
…it is your teacher!

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE ‘SPIRITUAL’ TO BE SPIRITUAL

You don’t have to be ‘spiritual’ to be spiritual.

Buddhas are empty cognisance suffused with awareness (the knowing quality).

Ordinary beings are empty cognisance suffused with ignorance (not knowing).

Being spiritually aware is recognising that which is beyond thought. It has nothing to do with wearing ‘spirituality’ as an adornment. At retreats I don’t feel ‘spiritual’ at all, but remember mirror-like awareness and just let things be.

The actual experience of empty cognisance suffused with awareness (the knowing quality) is beyond words and description, words are unnecessary. (For us, this is a “baby” empty cognisance suffused with awareness)

We can share this experience while remaining silent and compassionate, or we can use language. Spiritual paths, traditions or vehicles use language slightly differently, and so here we have to be very careful.

In the ordinary run of life, there is no spiritual discussion: there are beliefs, philosophies and theories – that’s all – and so spiritual terminology can get mixed up. Left to ourselves, we will wander all over the place…many times…guessing!

A tradition has steps and subtleties of language through which we build confidence and refine understanding. A tradition will accelerate the process of uncovering and realising liberation. However, this is done by taking the teaching to heart.

As Garab Dorje’s ‘Three Words That Strike The Vital Point” says, “Recognise your own nature, decide on one point and gain confidence in liberation.”

A firm foundation is the recognition of awareness – knowing awareness – the awareness of awareness.

The very subtle refinement of that awareness, is the resting in that awareness of awareness, discovering ‘nothing doing’ – an uncontaminated realm. That is “baby” empty cognisance suffused with awareness, the knowing quality. From that we build a continuity of conduct, with compassion for others naturally occurring.

If we think of ourselves as “spiritual” people,

we are cheating.

Be the compassionate spirit

we naturally are.

In that, we are “ordinary”.

WHAT EVIL FEARS

What Evil Fears

The key to this prison is the emotions.
Their flare-up can either lock the door or open it.
Emotions can either ignite our suffering, or vividly enlighten our perception.
Light can work two ways:
to blind or illuminate.

Evil is attracted to an I: Essence blindness.
Evil’s weakness: Essence illuminated.

Thoughts and emotions are Essence’s expression.
If we claim them, they lock us in.
If we recognise them, they are
Self liberating.

Lock your self in, or let your self go!

Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche: “Rainbow Painting”

Recognise the thought as it occurs so that it is liberated simultaneously with its arising.

This is very unlike the stream of thoughts that surges through the mind of an ordinary person. Often called ‘black diffusion,’this state is an unwholesome pattern of dissipation in which there is no knowledge whatsoever about who is thinking, where the thought comes from, and where the thought disappears.

One has not even caught the ‘scent’ of awareness; there are only unwholesome thought patterns operating, so that one is totally and mindlessly carried away by one thought after another. That is definitely not the path of liberation!

In the beginning, if we have already recognised out nature even once, we have caught the scent of it. Once you get a ‘whiff’ of your nature, it becomes familiar, like someone you already know: you do not need to doubt who your friend is when you meet him. At this point, thoughts are liberated upon recognition, like the vanishing of a drawing on water.

We can grow more and more accustomed to this fact through practice. Once the practitioner gains immediate recognition of the Buddha nature, there is no need to apply any additional techniques at all. This same moment a thought starts to move; the thought is liberated by itself. It is like a knot tied in a snake that does not have to be untied by anyone, because it unravels itself. This exemplifies becoming more stable in the training.

Finally, the third analogy of liberating of thought is described as being like a thief entering an empty house. This is called stability or perfect training. A thief enters an empty house does not gain anything, and the house does not lose anything. All thought activity is naturally liberated without any harm or benefit whatsoever. That is the meaning of gaining confidence in liberation.

 Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche: “Rainbow Painting”

(by the way, as there is nothing to steal, the thief is not harmed either!)

MEDITATION-SO WHAT?!

Meditation – so what?!

Meditation is not the most important thing: liberation is. It is not enough to be able to concentrate and be still, while remaining deluded. Deluded means being still caught up in the vicious cycle of seeking happiness, and winding up in negative emotions…again!

We may generate a still mind, but wonder, “So, what do I do now?” This could go on for twenty five years or more…I should know! (there comes a time when we have to move on to another teacher).

Stillness is only part of the equation: it is the Shamata aspect of meditation. We then need to recognise awareness/clarity, and that is the Vipassana aspect of meditation. Then, that awareness needs to look in on itself and recognise pure, empty Essence. That is the top-of-the-mountain view – the panoramic view – the Emptiness aspect, with nothing obscuring that view.

The final part of the equation is unlimited compassion – Essence love!

If we lack clarity and essence love,

we are still caught by worldly affairs.

If we are not caught by world affairs,

we have liberation.

.

TO KARMA OR NOT TO KARMA…!

To karma or not to karma…!

In an emotional, negatively charged moment,

we feel that something bad is happening.

We suffer, sick to our core,

with guilt and anger towards ourselves.

However.

That present, negative pain

is a result of previous actions – karma.

Its presence in the present moment is neutral,

and in itself,

generates no future karma.

Nothing is actually happening.

The creation of karma

is contained in our response!
