GOOD MENTAL HEALTH

Good Mental Health

We all have to take care of both our physical and mental health to maintain wellbeing, free from anxiety. Our mind affects our body through the way we see life. We have to train our mind to stay calm, rather than getting over-excited or giving in to apathy. Trying to keep up appearances isn’t the solution; that is the way of stress that leads to dis-ease. Even if we hide our discomfort, we suffer in some way, and this anxiety shows. We are a drugged society, bingeing on excitement and apathy.

So how can we manage our stress and anxiety? Good mental health is feeling free from keeping up with a society which has no idea where it’s going.

We have to make do and mend with whatever life throws at us.

Making do is accepting karma – the result of our previous actions.
Mending is bring our mind – and so, our life – back to balance, at our level.
‘Level’: The scenario in which we find ourself, and which we can transcend.

And what if we don’t have a fancy cushion to sit on in order to meditate?
We all have bums.

HOW MANY KNOW OUR REALITY

How Many Know Our Reality?

We may assume that we are ‘awake’, but do we know what that is?

Wakefulness is perfect, spontaneous clarity,
free of an illusory dream state which is volatile and predictable,
displaying rapid changes of emotion.

Wakefulness does not react, but works consciously,
gradually realising our conscious reality.

SOMETIMES, THINGS DON’T SEEM RIGHT OR COMPLETE

Sometimes, Things Don’t Seem Right Or Complete

This is intuition at work.

Most of us ignore our natural intuition in favour of second-hand information that we project onto whatever we see. This is never a complete picture.

Intuition is knowledge without conscious reasoning. It is insight or the ability to understand something instinctively, before information can be translated into a communicable form. It’s an intermediate state between thought-feelings and pure consciousness, and can lead to states of minor enlightenment.

Our path is realising the cause of our own confusion; only then may we be able to empathise with others rather than criticising them, as we understand how they are working. The very moment we recognise that our mind is confused is the moment of realisation that pure consciousness is present.

We have to keep consciousness alive through experience, rather than as a scholarly exercise. The real Dharma is something we experience for ourselves. Listening to intuition can take us further than whatever is being taught.

Intuition is the door knocker.
We could stand outside, discussing the colour of the knocker,
or we could actually knock, and the door opens.
🙂

SIMPLICITY IS NEVER THROWN BY COMPLEXITY

Simplicity Is Never Thrown By Complexity

When we know our essence of pure, compassionate consciousness, together with the three corresponding poisons of desire, fear and indifference that obscure this essence, we then know everything we need to know, as practitioners.

These prime aspects of life can, of course, be broken down into other elements, and that leads to confusion. Over the centuries, elaborations upon elaborations occurred, and became increasingly complex and distracting.

‘Pure’ means being empty of bias – transcendent wisdom.

‘Compassionate’ means caring – encompassing the five perfections of generosity, patience, morality, discipline and concentration/meditation.

‘Consciousness’ is what we actually are; we are embodied in a human form but forget transcendent wisdom.

PURE CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Pure Consciousness Is The Elephant In The Room

The ‘elephant in the room’ is a metaphor for something that is obvious but no one mentions because it makes us feel uncomfortable.

We will talk for hours about other matters, but never about our obvious, true reality and that which obscures it. The elephant in the room is pure consciousness; it’s what, in truth, we are.

We cannot see the elephant
because it’s our very essence of empty-purity.
This essence became distracted by our monkey-mind-consciousness,
which jumps all over the place and cannot sit still.

When consciousness (monkey mind) realises through practice
that its very essence is emptiness,
monkey and elephant become a unity of non-duality,
like a mirror and its reflection.
Appearances and recognition are simultaneous.

When we ignore our true being that has nothing to gain,
we are left with a monkey mind that
that wants everything and fears everything,
and ignores its reality.

Understanding this is the gradual path of liberation.

ONCE WE KNOW, WE CANNOT NOT KNOW

Once We Know, We Cannot Not Know

Once we know, we cannot not know.
When we know, we recognise an exaggeration or untruth.

The Age of Strife is the result of exaggerations
that cause conflict and confusion, and divide people.

If there is an exaggeration,
there must be an instigator
(even though we may not know who that is).

Just because we don’t know exactly how something became broken
doesn’t mean we give up,
because karma will then take over.

The clarity of consciousness ensures that we merely note,
rather than relying on karmic responses.

ARE YOUR TITS TOO BIG FOR SPIRITUALITY?!*

Are Your Tits Too Big For Spirituality?!*

Spiritual practice isn’t about how you look;
it’s about how you look!

We shouldn’t feel that have to develop ‘a look’ to fit into a group but, unfortunately, many do, adopting a sort of identity. That’s form over substance, which is opposite to the essence of the teaching.

If we feel that we don’t fit in, it’s not our fault. There are other ways. We come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and neuroses (although, of course, those in the inner group, don’t have any neuroses :-D.

Spirituality is all about the clarity and kindness of consciousness, rather than being concerned with the way we want to appear.

Having the ability to listen to each other’s concerns
is being a spiritual friend.

Merely repeating dogma
is being a spiritual fiend.
😉

The only way to become a spiritual friend is to be truly confident,
having no fear.

Just be your self:
be kind and be open.

EVIL CAN NEVER HAVE POWER OVER GOODNESS

Evil Can Never Have Power Over Goodness

Why not?

Goodness is a pure heart;
it is pure consciousness that can never be deceived,
whereas the mind can.
Know the difference.

Evil intent has no insight, and cannot recognise the emptiness or purity of consciousness; it cannot comprehend this as there is nothing to gain, and so it transfers attention endlessly. Evil is only concerned with what it can gain. The evil in us feeds off others’ emotions, and thereby seeks to exert control. It’s abuse. In its base form, it’s what trolls do on the internet. In its sophisticated and subtle form, it wants to control the populace with false ideas, false fear and false hopes.

Goodness is recognising our original reality that is, first and foremost, pure consciousness before these ideas are recognised. Evil wants us to forget our true nature, and pumps us with spurious facts that have us running around in circles, arguing and bullying one another.

Just look and see:
we are free.
Evil knows this.

The shock should wake us up but,
as most are too busy serving evil without knowing it,
that guitar gently weeps.

As evil is worldwide, it never sleeps.
Nor should we.

HATRED FINDS NO HOME

Hatred Finds No Home

This says it all.

Hatred: intense dislike.
Hatred disturbs the mind:
we find no peace, and no home.

Home: permanent residence.
The only thing permanent is our inner reality.

Thing: that which has no specific name.

Only through the realisation
of the true inner nature of all sentient beings
can compassion arise … and we arrive home.

Without love, we are nowhere.
With love, we are now-here.

Attending to whatever we do with a good heart is always in the moment now.
In that, there is all the love and joy we could wish for;
decorating a home with a good atmosphere 🙂

OUR SPIRITUAL PATH IS OUR GREAT UNDOING

Our Spiritual Path Is Our Great Undoing

😀

Spirituality is pure consciousness. It is not a thing; it’s … infinite reception and transmission. Our so-called path is merely our confusion which, when recognised, does not exist, so hanging on to an idea of spirituality is totally counter-productive. After all, we are what we seek. Seeking implies doing ‘something’, which may make us feel good, but we have to keep this up – it’s an artificial construct. We are already ultimate consciousness; it only has to be recognised and realised.

We (consciousness) adopted and built an attitude, and developed a self-image, just like everyone else on this planet. We have to, in order to survive. However, we became so involved in this self-identity – while oblivious to our true, original reality – that we fail to see through all the illusions presented to us.

We see, but ignore this seeing because so many are disinterested and think they are here to pass away time, and so we do too – and we doubt. This becomes a collective mindset, just like watching a film together.

Our path is a matter of undoing an elaborate concoction of self-doubt and self-importance that, once recognised, vanishes. The elaborations disappear. Stop for a moment and imagine the people you do not like: the mind starts recalling all sorts of things, and builds emotions and justifications … grrrh! … but consciousness hasn’t changed. It just sees a show in the mind. Meditation proves this by watching the mind trot off in all directions, with consciousness just following along. Psychologist know this!

Having established that this is the case, we can now repair karma (our way of life) by undoing the confusion and doubt to which we consented. Just because others do something doesn’t mean it’s right 🙂

Thank goodness we realised our path in this lifetime! If we are reading this … we must have done something good.

Karma may sound unfair,
but it isn’t a punishment.

It’s our teacher, our path,
our undoing.

WHY DO MOST PEOPLE NOT ‘GET IT’?

Why Do Most People Not ‘Get It’?

Much depends on our early years; our infant experiences and associations (the talk surrounding us) influence and set our brain in a certain way, creating our attitude to life.

The Buddha said, “Don’t take my word for it; see for yourself”,
but we don’t see.
We assume.

The essence of life – the essence of everything – comes down to one or two aspects, but this has been made increasingly complex, which gives rise to ambiguity, inexactness and confusion. Confused people conform easily to suggestion – it’s how hypnosis works.

Because we see in our way, we cannot recognise how others see, and so we cannot see what is coming. Once we are influenced, when our button is pushed, we revert to type.

The insightful author, Aldous Huxley, wrote about this in 1932 in his dystopian novel, “Brave New World”, where everyone accepts the servitude for which they have been screened. This book, together with George Orwell’s “1984” – which is about changing people’s views through fear and doublespeak while rewriting history – reveals how things were set in motion decades ago and are coming to light now.

To some, these are just sci-fi stories,
but to those who ‘get it’,
they are a precise prediction of the sequence of events.

Inner knowledge is obvious to some,
while to others, it’s a mystery,
which is why they don’t ‘get it’.

This is the Kali Yuga, the Age of Strife,
where we can make the fastest acceleration
– one way or another!

REALISE THE PATTERN THROUGHOUT OUR HISTORY

Realise The Pattern Throughout Our History

The pattern: create belief; create an enemy.

Creating a belief engenders fear and hope.
Belief gives rise to injustice and divides people.
Divided people become angry.
Angry people react.
Reaction is suppressed.
Suppression creates more reaction, maintaining the pattern.
Further reaction turns dislike into hatred.
Each set of incidents sows the seeds for further disharmony.

The answer is to actually see the pattern and know that we have been manipulated throughout history; it starts at birth with sentimental chants.

There is no creator. Everything comes into existence through causes and conditions. Whatever happens in our life is due to our karma; our life is our karma. If we believe that this is our only reality, we will just get more of the same.

Karma is being imprisoned in a set of beliefs. When we know, beliefs drop away and we are free. We still have to live with the inmates, but now we can see why they are the way they are. When we know that, we have empathy and compassion, and fear nothing.
Tip: don’t argue – listen.

Our reality is in the present. In the present moment, there is a knowingness without beliefs. It’s no good just chanting prayers of compassion; we actually have to understand and realise the predicament that we are all in. We start listening – and talking 😀

WE LIVE IN A FIEFDOM

We Live In A Fiefdom

Fiefdom; a bound system.

The word ‘fief’ is related to the Frankish term ‘fehu-ôd’, in which ‘fehu’ means ‘cattle and ‘-ôd’ means ‘goods’, implying “a moveable object of value”.

The key is in the word.
Once we realise what the key means,
it opens the door to boundless freedom,
and we are no longer fettered by others’ ideas.

We became human when we desired more. All creatures are sentient, being conscious and having a mind. There comes a time when a sentient being sees more potential, and that is how we evolved from lower species to inspirational beings. Of course, you may disagree 😀 – we can come at our reality from many angles, because there are many paths of deception and partial understanding.

We bind ourselves through desire,
but desire also has the potential to become boundless.
There are two sides to every coin.

Having attained a human form, we want more; more wealth, more power, more excitement, more knowledge, more freedom … humans comprise types and subtypes.

We can see those who just want to play, and others who never feel they have enough wealth and power over those who just want to play. It’s all very exciting, and it feeds our base desires.

Desiring knowledge can easily be turned into the pursuit of stories and beliefs, which feeds the wealth and power of others. This is fiefdom: we belong to those who know the system, allowing them to exert power over us, and tell us what to do. We bind ourselves to a side – a religion, a political party, a group … – without realising the limitations we are placing on ourselves.

We lose our individuality by conforming.
“I don’t conform!!”

If we think we’re not conforming, we are conforming 🙂
Freedom lies in knowing that we are conforming.
Until then, we are in fiefdom.

If we are locked in fiefdom, we don’t want to acknowledge that there is an alternative view.
If we don’t believe what others believe – accepting something without proof – we become a threat, and are excommunicated.
Believers don’t want to talk to us anymore; been there, had that done!

The truth is that we are, first and foremost, boundless consciousness. It’s our origin, which we give away. The moment we wake up, we aren’t bound to anything, but then we go to the dream-state of memory and judgement, and are constrained again.

In the moment of non-meditation, when we recognise the boundaries we have created, there is only boundlessness. In the very moment of realising that, we are free again! That’s the only way we can be free; the trick is remaining free …

Don’t talk the talk,
just walk the walk.
Look, see and drop whatever is seen
and come to rest in the circle of no circumference.

In boundlessness, anything is allowed,
but not taken seriously.

DO WE BINGE ON TEACHINGS?

Do We Binge On Teachings?
Do they become a distraction?

Is such an approach actually lazy,
obscuring genuine, personal experience
where there are no doubts?

If there are no doubts,
we know what we’re doing.
We drop the teaching and just live it.
It’s not something we carry around.

If we find the teachings exciting and want more,
we don’t realise that we’re going over old ground again and again.
This causes doubt because we lack direct, genuine experience.

Direct experience is merely being in the immediate moment now,
dealing with whatever presents itself.

There is just the spontaneous presence of pure consciousness.,
without reliance on the past.

Pure consciousness is quite ordinary,
but we miss this in favour of the exotic
– the mystical, cultural element.
That being so, the teachers oblige us with stories.

Once we know the essence of the teachings,
anyone can become a teacher.
Who gives the teacher the authority to teach?
We do.
But this relationship is not based on sentimentality:
we re-cognise what we have always known.

Always looking for a new, provocative approach – oh wonder!
we become our own teacher.

We already know.
We are walking, talking Dharma.
What obscures this knowingness is the add-ons.

RECYCLING INFORMATION = NOTHING HAPPENS

Recycling Information = Nothing New Happens

Life becomes abundantly satisfying and worthwhile as we transcend our self-imposed limitations.

If we rely too much on ‘information’ gained from second-hand facts, we become too intellectual and serious, and our life-drama is dull and predictable.

If we lack direct, genuine experience,
we acquire a false sense of knowing.

Intellect never realises the preciousness of being alive, because intellect is too busy being sophisticated and making assumptions. On our death bed, we won’t wish that we’d acquired more scientific data; we’ll wish that we’d allowed ourselves to be more confident in our understanding of our psychology, and were therefore happier. If we spend our life relying on endless speculation and moderated news, we will end up feeling confused and pointless, and will indulge in yet more moderated news to fill a vacuum of misunderstanding.

Thoughts can only recycle the past,
ensuring that nothing new happens in our life.

Our life-drama is important to us, and only us. No one else is interested because they each have their own life-drama to bore us with 🙂 The story we create determines our acting performance in life.

Life itself is the deepest intelligence.

Intellect is merely conjecture;
it’s an opinion or conclusion
formed on the basis of incomplete information
about this intelligence.

“Know thy self.”
Who knows?

WHEN DID WE BEGIN?

When Did We Begin?

No one can answer this question for us, but we can come to some conclusion, and see how that makes sense. It’s okay to disagree.

When we consider the question of how ‘we’ began, we are probably meaning humans, because humans have the ability to reason beyond the physical. All sentient beings have primitive mind, governed by fight, flight or freeze. Even our chickens – and interplanetary constructs – experience this in the form of attraction, repulsion and inertia.

(As a side note, people often trot out the phrase, ‘fight or flight’, but omit to mention ‘freeze’. This is because they are merely repeating what they have heard, and do not understand the need to investigate further. The essence of spiritual teaching is that fight, flight or freeze correspond to desire, aversion and ignorance which, in advanced understanding, are the three wisdoms of emptiness, consciousness and compassionate activity. For more details, enter ‘correlation between negative emotions and wisdoms’ in the search box at the bottom of this page).

The Earth sustains countless beings, some of which are just basic cell structures that feed off hosts. Are they conscious? They seek survival. Again, any conclusion is up to the individual. There is an infinite number of beings trying to survive in an infinite universe, so consciousness is everywhere, in either an advanced or basic form.

Where did I start?
It is said that, due to predisposition, consciousness enters a form, lives out its life and leaves, to enter another form that suits what has been learnt … or not. This has gone on in a timeless manner; everything moves due to causes and conditions.

Each sentient being goes through its routines until, in a moment, it becomes excited about being and a desire for more is born. That desire was – and is – the beginning of our journey to enlightenment. Over lifetimes, we have become increasingly calculating and judgemental, which leads us to an enlightened understanding or a gross understanding; we either evolve into kindness, or devolve into aggression. As we evolve, we find teachings to show us the way to our ultimate nature.

The way in which we view this will have a tremendous impact on our lives.

Matter doesn’t disappear;
it reforms due to causes and conditions.
The same applies to consciousness.

A QUESTION TO REVEAL OUR SELF

A Question To Reveal Our Self

This could be applied to any question or assertion used to reveal our actual state of mind, rather than the state of mind we like to portray to others. Until enlightenment, we will all have an attitude that assumes we manifest good qualities.

There is no one answer to this question; just look at your response, and the response to that response.

Q. It is said in Buddhism that, due to reincarnation,
every sentient being in the universe
has been our mother.
How does your mind respond to that?

The important reality lies in what is observing the mind’s reactions.

THINKING AND THOUGHTS

Thinking And Thoughts

Thinking

is tool, such as a hammer.
We use it for that moment,
and then put it away in the tool box so that we can find it
when it’s next needed.

Thinking is what we do to resolve something. In fact, thinking merely involves seeing and weighing up possibilities. Having then realised what is required, we drop that activity, as there is no need to hold on to it because the next immediate moment presents itself, and we need a clear head. We don’t carry one resolution to the next, as the next may require a different approach.

Thoughts

are equivalent to carrying the hammer around with us all the time,
along with all our other burdens.

This is how the continuity of karma is maintained in our behaviour.

WHAT REALISES, AND WHAT IS REALISED?

What Realises, And What Is Realised?

We exist to realise what we are, and what we are not.
If we do not realise what we are,
we remain ignorant of our true reality.

It is shocking that we do not know this,
as we have been led to believe otherwise for millennia.

What realises? It is the clear mirror-wisdom of pure consciousness, which is just seeing these words right now, without reacting. There is nothing astonishing about that, is there?

That which is to be realised is the reactions in the mind that we believe consciousness to be. Here lies our confusion, and we spend our time judging others’ confusion –“The pot calling the kettle black”.

When there is just seeing, that is pure consciousness, which isn’t complicated or beyond us, is it? It is the moment of oneness, without an interpreter. Life becomes complex when we start comparing, interpreting, judging and dividing.

When consciousness is stuck in the reflections in the mind, it will never know its true reality. Consciousness cannot see itself; it can only realise what is happening. It may seem that there are two realities of observer and the thing observed, but there is only one – the observation itself. There is no difference between thoughts and seeing thoughts, as appearances and recognition are simultaneous.

The spontaneous moment of now is timeless,
while clinging to thoughts takes up time.

Thinking is spontaneous and alive
– it resolves and is dropped –
while thoughts are prejudgements that dominate our life.

HOW DO WE MAKE DECISIONS?

How Do We Make Decisions?

We cannot deny that we exist, but how do we exist?
Are we just clever, human animals,
or is there something rather unique
within every individual which, when realised,
isn’t unique?

If we feel we are personally unique,
we will separate ourselves from others.
If we realise we are not unique,
compassion and happiness will naturally arise.

Our understanding of this will affect our decision making,
as the decisions we make will depend on what we think we are.

What is it that is within every individual that is unique,
but common to all?
It is pure consciousness that is undivided.

WHY DOES GOD ALLOW SUFFERING?

Why Does God Allow Suffering?

It’s something people either ask,
or use as a statement.

God/Pure Consciousness sees suffering as a conflict in the mind.
The mind and body suffer
while pure consciousness watches.

To say God allows suffering
merely shows an infantile understanding,
because we want someone to blame for our decisions.

When we realise our true essence,
suffering is seen as a residue of past ideas.

The body gets old and sick, and dies,
but all through this, pure consciousness simply watches.

When we ignore our true essence,
we suffer.

Pure consciousness never suffers,
but is sad for those who do.

SELF, PURE CONSCIOUSNESS, GOD; IT’S ALL THE SAME

Self, Pure Consciousness, God; It’s All The Same

Self Is Pure Consciousness.
Pure consciousness is Self.
And God? Oh my God, we’re God

On a exoteric level, it is claimed that these are different,
and so we are divided.

On the esoteric level, they are the same,
and so we are a unity.

We become what we spend most time with.
Choose wisely.

Talking separates us.
True communication is in the silence of non-verbal, good company.

Silence is Ramana Maharshi’s highest teaching:
the mind is brought to silence.
It is not about doing anything.
It is not reacting mentally to anything.

Note: Self is not the same as my self.
Capitalised Self is original being.
Small character self is a mind construct.

Self = infinite mind.
self = small mind.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF GURUS?

What’s The Point Of Gurus?

What’s the point of Gurus?
What’s the point of spiritual groups?

If we see these questions as negative,
we lack confidence in realisation.

These are valid questions.
The whole point of these questions
is to see how they are answered.

We all have to start somewhere
to know what we are.

When we know what we are,
the world is our oyster,
our teacher.

We can do anything and go anywhere,
because everything and everyone is a reminder
of emptiness and compassion.

The point is now
to help others start their quest
… and then let go.

ACKNOWLEDGING EVIL

Acknowledging Evil

If we cannot acknowledge evil, we will never be able to acknowledge truth. How does evil exist, or does it even exist? Throughout human history, this subject has haunted us.

Evil is merely negativity in our mind that creates darkness, due to biased judgement. It is biased because that mind is already prejudiced so that it never sees the light or clarity of truth. Prejudice is the darkness that turns into many levels of evil thought and action, while feeling righteous.

The very moment we acknowledge a sense of heaviness in our mind, we acknowledge the light of truth. Unfortunately, due to habitual behaviour and lack of spiritual practice, that ‘light’ creates virtuous evil-good. We have seen this throughout history.

Seeing isn’t believing. Seeing is knowing and realising how we have been caught and held against our conscience.

WHEN THE STORY TWISTS AND TURNS …

When The Story Twists And Turns …
… the reader’s mind twists and turns.

As long as a reader is hooked and addicted, the story will continue.

The truth of any story is the reader, not the story. Who is the reader? Consciousness. What is consciousness? It is the pure state of being, before an observer pokes its nose in. If an observer (self) is present, it has already been captured by the story, and taken sides.

How do we know when an observer has taken over? Consciousness falls into either a state of vacancy (indifference) when what is observed is just a piece of entertainment, or consciousness becomes agitated, reactionary and overpowered.

Pure being does not twist and turn. It just sees, and isn’t led down the garden path. If down the garden path, they deceive you by making you believe something which is not true.

We oppose “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” by not believing everything we read, see or hear, standing back and take an overview to understand the general picture of where a story is leading us. We read between the lines to understand the real or hidden meaning behind the  superficial appearance of something.

When we believe, we become the story.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH SPIRITUAL TEACHERS

Our Relationship With Spiritual Teachers

Be devoted to the truth, rather than the person.
A teacher is a reminder of the truth,
and truth is everywhere you are.

Being devoted to a teacher can create a cult mentality. Even though we are grateful to a teacher for explaining the teachings, a teacher comes with their own cultural and personal baggage, as do we all.

Truth has no entitlement: it is our natural state of pure consciousness.
Entitlement: deserving of privileges or special treatment.

When it comes to teaching, the strong serve the weak. The teaching is concerned with the student’s progress in realising their true nature, rather than how wonderful the teacher is. Adoring the teacher in the hope of salvation merely keeps us in spiritual poverty.

We are all entitled to know and recognise our true reality of pure consciousness without name, title or position, and so beyond blame and fame.

“Truth is only known by re-cognition.”

THE ENABLERS OF GOOD AND EVIL

The Enablers Of Good And Evil

That’s us.
😀

Enabler: a person or thing that makes something possible.

Enabling has a positive aspect of empowering individuals, but it also has a negative aspect of encouraging dysfunctional behaviour which has become our ‘normal’. This isn’t a criticism, however, as the result of dysfunctional behaviour can be the path to enlightenment 🙂

If we think there is no evil in the world, then we have not taken note of history and how evil uses ‘good’ enablers.

If we think that evil does not exist today, that means evil has learnt from history.

Evil comes to power through the assistance of good people – the enablers. Evil knows the power of the collective, so the collective has to be convinced to do evil’s bidding.

If we are not on a path to enlightenment, we will remain unenlightened. It is a shock to realise that we have taken a side and, once a side is taken, an enemy is created and shocking atrocities happen. People against people, each believing they are virtuous, which allows and enables evil to stay in power.

The question is, “Is the world a happy place?” The Buddha looked out and saw suffering; his motivation was to realise the cause of that suffering. Just because we are ‘happy’ does not mean others are.

Humans are adaptable in their misery, and evil knows that, understanding how far a human can be pushed and accept it. How does evil work? It knows what people like and dislike – and technology has made this observation even easier.

Enabler: a person or thing that makes something possible.

Evil knows this, and says, “Believe me”.
A Buddha knows this, and says,
“Don’t believe a word I’m saying; see for yourself.”

EVERYONE IS OUR PRECIOUS SPIRITUAL TEACHER

Everyone Is Our Precious Spiritual Teacher

A teacher is someone who shows us the way,
but we travel alone.

Our adopted spiritual teacher tells us nice things but,
in truth, those around who annoy us
are our precious teachers.

They show us our reactions, tendencies and understanding
… or lack thereof.

Annoying people are our fastest way to heaven.
Purgatory purifies us.
😀
When we know we are in hell,
the only way is up.

SINCERITY AND BOASTFULNESS

Sincerity And Boastfulness

Unconditional sincerity or truthfulness is the absence of pretence, deceit, or hypocrisy. If we say we have compassion, this must manifest with the absence of self. To be sincere, we have to be honest and trustworthy.

Smugness is looking pretty.

How to make a Buddha laugh?
Tell them how good you are!

FREEDOM FROM TRIBAL POLITICS

Freedom From Tribal Politics

When spirituality becomes a religion, religion becomes political.

Spirituality frees.
Religion binds.
Politics influences.

Result: monkey see, monkey do.

To influence, social manipulation has to take place in order to maintain an idea. It’s what chimpanzees do; they intimidate – from medieval Latin intimidat- ‘make timid’, to frighten or overawe, especially in order to make people do what we want.

Chimpanzee politics: chimpanzees acknowledge and respect a hierarchy within their group. Dominant relationships are influenced by alliances, and coalitions are formed through social manipulation to secure and maintain influential positions, especially within the inner circle.

How much have we evolved?
Politics binds us to someone else’s freedom.

In reality, we are already free.

ESCAPING CHAOS AND CONFUSION

Escaping Chaos And Confusion

People around us are in chaos and confusion because they believe in something or other.

To escape this madness, the answer is simple. That which sees this chaos and confusion is neither in chaos nor confused. Voilà! … there you are! Simple magic. That which just sees is pure consciousness, our original reality.

The real trick is staying free.

YOU’RE NOT MAKING A FOOL OF YOURSELF

You’re Not Making A Fool Of Yourself

You’re not making a fool of yourself;
your self is making a fool of you.

What is ‘self’, and what is ‘you’?
Self is consciousness, identifying with ideas.
You are silenced consciousness that is aware of these identifications.

We are constantly being fooled into identifying with this or that.
Being fooled more than once
means that we can be fooled again and again.

Until enlightenment, self will fool consciousness.

IT IS THE WORST OF TIMES, IT IS THE BEST OF TIMES

It Is The Worst Of Times, It Is The Best of Times

How is this the worst of times?

In diabolical times, people become more divided. The media soothsayers speculate about the future, creating fear, chaos, and confusion, either winding people up or entertaining them so that they ignore their bewilderment.

We are continually being warned of worse to come (fear) and the great rebuild on the horizon (hope). All the while, people are in the dark regarding their true nature that is beyond hope and fear, and which is conscious, compassionate and wise, beyond imagination.

How is this the best of times?

There are two aspects to enlightenment; realising that we are only pure consciousness, and recognising whatever obscures that pure consciousness. Basically, it’s all emptiness. Pure consciousness is empty cognisance, and all seeming obscurations are empty of true existence – they come and go. Things only seem real because we fixate on them, not noticing that everything is impermanent.

When we see how ridiculous it’s all become, with people fearing everything and everyone, they are bound to become hostile and out of control.

The more we hear ridiculous nonsense,
the more obvious it is.

Humans are highly adaptable.
This is both our genius and our downfall:
genius in that we can see through the fake,
and downfall in that we can put up with it.

We are the constant mirror of direct, clear consciousness;
the reflections are second-hand news.
Even religions and spiritual groups turn emptiness into a second-hand event.

Sit anywhere in silent clarity, and all is revealed.

There isn’t anything new under the sun …

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom,
it was the age of foolishness,
it was the epoch of belief,
it was the epoch of incredulity,
it was the season of light,
it was the season of darkness,
it was the spring of hope,
it was the winter of despair.”

― Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, 1859

“Sometimes, you put walls up not to keep people out,
but to see who cares enough to break them down.”

THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY

There Are Two Sides To Every Story

Depending on our mindset, we lean towards one side or another – and even when we have taken a side, we find another side presents itself, and so on.

These are the yanas, the levels we transcend until we reach total satisfaction of enlightenment. Our life starts off with us being indoctrinated with mundane thoughts but, with the right motivation, the supramundane dawns.

At certain moments, conflicts arise, and associations do not fit any more; we can no longer conform to expectations, and find that understanding is incomplete (although it may still satisfy others). Our experience and the required conformity no longer match up, fuelled not only by what is implied, but also by what is omitted.

A separation occurs, but it is important to realise that those who think differently are not now the enemy. This is where empathy must come in. We know what effect believing in one side as opposed to another has on our mind. One is not superior to the other: we just have to look at things in a different light in order to complete the picture. Shiva, Buddha, Jesus were not saying different things – they all had light, but their emphasis was unique, and for that moment.

This isn’t merely about having a different opinion. We have genuinely outgrown what we previously adhered to. Those crutches just dropped away, and we now walk with a fresh confidence, and are happy!

Being independent, communication now relies upon seeing other sides to truly be of benefit to others, rather than being concerned with self-aggrandisement.

When we take sides, we alienate one another and become divided. That provides an opportunity for ego to arise, and evil to manifest. ‘Evil’ is ego, clinging to likes and dislikes. Evil is no big deal, but it does exert a hold on us, making us righteous and creating enemies. The more righteous we become, the more annoying we are 🙂

We are all good and evil, light and dark, positive and negative, objective and subjective, confused and wise.

The secret:
We are free in the moment of seeing.
– Tulku Urgyen, a Tibetan master.

Darkness is only possible
by the presence of light.
It’s all one.

When we cling to a side, we miss the whole point.
That’s what evil likes.

A FEW RANDOM THOUGHTS

A Few Random Thoughts
Random: happening without method or conscious decision.

Be Grateful For Not Being A Perfect Human Being
There is more to us.

We Can Never Find Pure Consciousness
We are that which we seek

Don’t Change Your Mind
Change the way you see.

We Can Never Find A Self
The self is merely make-believe in the mind.

It’s A Relief To Be Happy
Happiness is none other than relief.

Relief: alleviate. From Latin alleviare – ‘lightened’,
from ad- ‘to’ + levare ‘raise’, influenced by levis ‘light’.

OUR TEMPLE OF WORSHIP IS OUR MIND

Our Temple Of Worship Is Our Mind

Worship: acknowledgement of worth.

The mind is where we contemplate and meditate, creating the template for our life. Our temple is a place to moderate our temper. If we make too much noise, those sounds reverberate and evoke images, memories and emotions.

Our mind is the holy land watched over by consciousness. Thinking that a holy land is somewhere else is turning the atemporal (independent of time) into the temporal (governed by time).

Mind is a place of confusion and enlightenment.
They are one and the same.

When we realise our true worth of pure consciousness,
any emotion is freed in that moment.

MEDITATION WORKS

Meditation Works

Sacred moments.

The mind is a sacred space, and should be treated with respect so that clarity is revealed, and we see and think clearly. It’s that important. Meditation works because, in silence, the mind’s inner temple is focused and ceases to be over active.

Temple: Middle English: from Old French, from an alteration of Latin tempora, plural of tempus  ‘temple of the head’.

We are sacred beings of pure consciousness. Through meditation, inner magic occurs and space is transformed into an atmosphere of inspirational reality. Meditation is non-dual yoga – without tying ourselves in knots.

Know meditation.
Non-dual: no me, no meditator.

If we do not see consciousness as sacred,
we just run amok in a congenial way.

TRUTH IS BEFORE AND BEYOND WORDS

Truth Is Before And Beyond Words

Repetition of words rather than direct experience
relies on second hand information,
and trivialises meaning.

Direct experience has no words.

When we let go of all concepts, we see clearly.
Freedom begins when presumptions end
and all associations are dropped.

The words we adopt cast a spell over us,
and a persona is born;
it’s a sort of dressed-up conjuring trick.

Direct experience is naked.

WHEN THE TRUTH ISN’T RECOGNISED

When The Truth Isn’t Recognised

The truth of our being may not register with everyone. Years ago, my wife and I attended a lecture by the Dalai Lama, and we both fell asleep. It wasn’t that we weren’t interested; it was as if someone was talking about an extra colour in the rainbow which we hadn’t registered before.

So now we can empathise when people don’t ‘get it’, when it seems so obvious.

Bombarded with spurious, fake, false information about life, it can seem truly difficult to see the simple answer to everything – and just saying that can go right over people’s head.

The simple answer is the essence of consciousness that just sees.

When dealing with others, all we can do is stand firm and be kind and patient, able to accept or tolerate delays, problems and suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious. This process is incredibly instructive and challenging, and establishes true compassion.

Actually … this is the path to enlightenment.

BEING SOMETHING WE’RE NOT

Being Something We’re Not

Wanting to be something that we’re not means we don’t have to look at ourselves. We can change our bodies or change our minds, but the spirit of consciousness remains the same. It’s vital to understand that this is our constant reality.

Spirituality isn’t about dropping our self. It is working with the mindset that is controlling our behaviour. Our real practice is seeing this ‘spiritual’ self for what it is – an imitator.

Spiritual psychology is dealing with what we have, rather than what someone else has. The easiest way to tie ourselves in spiritual knots is to copy others, and try to conform to their imitations.

Self is our teacher as it is a product of karma, the accumulations and effects of our past actions that cloak ever-present consciousness. The moment we dissolve self, we dissolve karma and all obscurations, and attain enlightenment … for that moment. What we do in the next moment will depend on our approach to this subject.

Self isn’t our enemy; believing our self to be real is just a misunderstanding. If we make our self into a big deal, our path becomes even more cluttered.

Our self is our perfect teacher. All that happens to us is our perfect teacher. Embodied, we have to deal with our physicality, but we needn’t obsess either about that, or the world in which we live.

In an imperfect world,
we have all that we need
to be perfectly happy with what we are.

UNCULTIVATED WAKEFULNESS

Uncultivated Wakefulness

The hardest thing is dropping our fixations

Through realisation of our innate nature that is the only reality, we notice that we don’t over react or panic as we once did. We stop shouting at the ‘radio’ 😀 Emptiness is standing back so that consciousness sees clearly, and is able to adapt. Then situations can be dealt with in a cool way, rather than getting overheated.

The interesting thing is that the same goes for pleasant situations; we don’t over react. This might sound disconcerting as we may expect to feel elated and happy, but there is just quiet satisfaction in a cool way. The satisfaction drops away as there is always the next moment to deal with.

We may appear to be a cold and unmoving person, but the warmth is there, just not an ostentatious way, not dressed up to impress.

Uncultivated wakefulness isn’t being something that we are not. We are a rich rawness. We have explored our self and let go of any hint of a pretence of being wise.

Result = uncultivated relaxation.
Life can be fruitful;
we just have to arrived at a conclusion sooner rather than later.

CAN SPIRITUAL TEACHINGS HAVE AN OPPOSITE EFFECT?

Can Spiritual Teachings Have An Opposite Effect?

Spiritual teachers often talk about love, compassion and carefreeness, but this can manifest as an opposite effect. Reality lies in a pure heart, rather than in ideas and theories in the mind.

We have an idea about love, compassion and carefreeness, but that isn’t the reality.

The reality of love, compassion and carefreeness is what we are, and the way in which that is displayed.

When something evolves into a doctrine – a belief that’s held and taught – people become uptight and neurotic, displaying repressed nervousness, irritability or anger; they are unable to give expression to feelings or to empathise with others who may not see the doctrine in the same way.

When the teaching becomes a doctrine to which we want to belong, we feel vulnerable as that isn’t our complete reality. Lacking in confidence and feeling insecure, we are compelled to return for more teachings, and end up in a vicious cycle of existence, going round in circles hoping that the next retreat will give us the answer 😉

If we become dependent, we lack confidence and remain subtly aggressive. What starts wars? Belief. Love, compassion and carefreeness are in abundance in the presence of true confidence. This is fearlessness and hopelessness, and we can deal with anything.

THE MOMENT BEFORE WE THINK THAT WE ARE AWAKE

The Moment Before We Think That We Are Awake

The moment before we go into our old routine, our behaviour, is the moment of ordinary, original, pure experience of pure consciousness. That is the moment when we are awake, before we start relying on memory to name and judge everything. The more familiar we become with this pure moment, the longer we stay awake, which has an effect on the following moment when our reactions and judgements kick in: recognising the moment of pure consciousness loosens those reactions and we are more measured in our responses.

It’s so simple, but we have become so complex.

When we just go straight into our old routine, we miss this moment of pure experience and, instead, delve into our play-world of projections and comments. We lose our peace as our world is full of woes.

We can give this pure moment fancy Latin or Sanskrit or Tibetan names, but ordinary, pure experience is before all those proclamations.
From Latin proclamatio(n-), from proclamare ‘to shout out’.

Shout out? You mean puff ourselves up! 😀

Ordinary, original, pure experience is so much more fun. It’s bright, fresh, inspiring, creative when needed, scary … scary? Scary in a sense of not knowing, but knowingness of pure experience is, itself, present. The moment of all possibilities and potential.

I installed a new shower … hoping it would work … turned the water back on … heard a hissing sound … a moment of confusion … emptiness … fear … can I cope? … knowledge … “That’s water, that is” … “Water inside the wall!” … blankness … emptiness … despair … knowledge … “I’ve put a screw through a pipe!” … resignation … resolve … “Do it again”!

Result: every time I have a shower, I listen, and wonder! 😀

Meditation has the same effect; in a moment, we are awake to all possibilities and potential.
Nothing is fixed, and we are ready to repair.

COMPASSION IS COMPATIBILITY

Compassion Is Compatibility

Compatibility: To be able to exist or occur together without problems or conflict. Able to have a harmonious relationship; well suited. Consistent with another.
From medieval Latin compatibilis, from compati ‘suffer with’.

In order to be compatible, we have to know how another feels, and be able to adjust to their mind, rather than taking them to be an enemy. Everyone has the same pure heart, but their minds are in conflict with the minds of others.

The only way to realise happiness is to be compatible, without irritation, without an idea of how others should be. Everyone is learning at their own rate; even the Buddha couldn’t speed up this process. It is up to each individual to realise their true heart … with a little support from a compatible heart.

We all have compatible hearts.

There is little progress made
if we follow a spiritual path while remaining indifferent,
shunning others because we see them as an irritation.

Through our karmic response,
others are our teacher.

RELAXING IN A TROUBLED WORLD

Relaxing In A Troubled Mind

Relaxing a troubled mind in a troubled world.

Sitting quietly watching the breath, consciousness doesn’t follow thoughts or impulses to do things; the feeling to be active will be there but just let that go. You can do it later. This is the discipline of concentration and, in that way, the mind comes to silent, still awareness.

The troubles out there are still awaiting us but, for now, we rest in perfect equanimity. We may even notice that thoughts or the impulse to get up and go are stronger, but this isn’t so. We’re noticing more – we’re more aware, and it may even feel uncomfortable, but this is merely breaking our pattern of behaviour, and ego doesn’t like it. Ego is a word for consciousness clinging to ideas, based around a constructed concept of self. The more we notice, the more we are in control, and the more confident we become, the more inner peace is established.

Gradually, throughout our busy troubled day, we will be reminded of this inner peace – our natural state – and relax. This is the holy place of sanity, heaven, nirvana.

The world around wants us to be busy and involved, intent on blaming and complaining. This is all justifiable, but we cannot make the world better; even Krishna, Jesus and Buddha can’t do that. They can only inspire us to realise our inner world of light and delight. If we all did the same, the world will get better. As it is, we just have to play our little part and not take our troubles so seriously. The only thing we can do is note what is happening and, by doing so, be free.

When we know we are facing the right way, that’s all that is needed to progress towards enlightenment. Our mind is only troubled because the world is troubled, and we are picking trouble up from one another.

Worldly troubles are like a virus:
our job is to spread the virus of inner peace.

Realise inner peace first,
and then our world realises peace.

Inner peace is the light of a candle
passed on to other candles.

It is all light, but each candle
has its own unique display.

Be happy.
Little flames torch 😀 others.

“HEALTH AND SAFETY”

Health And Safety”

The slogan ‘health and safety’ saw the beginning of project fear, with people losing their ability to use common sense. An assessment of danger had to written up for practically everything we did.

We were bombarded with this phrase, and jobsworths (those who uphold petty rules even at the expense of humanity or common sense) would go around checking that we were do it ‘right’.

Now health and safety is our jailer, with lockdowns, arrests and lockups. “Keep your distance, cover your face, disinfect your hands, follow the arrows … ”

The pressure to conform is overshadowing our common sense, and this has created confusion, chaos and suffering, which has consequences for the future.

Our common sense is pure consciousness,
which is common to all.

When we lose sight of this commonality,
we lose empathy and compassion.
