“IS THIS OR ISN’T THIS PURE CONSCIOUSNESS?”

Is This Or Isn’t This Pure Consciousness?”

Our problem is that we just make do, when we should be making do and mending.

How do we mend? Because spiritual teachings (or Dharma) are not being fully explained – or we aren’t listening properly 🙂 – we are left with a spanner in our works; confusion in our mind. We doubt, but make do with questions that go unanswered. We receive generalisations (set pieces) that lack insight. Actually, we have to answer our own questions in the end, as that is our process, and no one is going to do this for us.

How do I know pure consciousness is pure consciousness? This goes straight to the crux of the matter.

It is through our personal practice and experience that genuine questions arise. Emotional upsets and theoretical questions are relative concerns, and are for a therapist. Here, we are talking about consciousness itself – our very nature that can be proven and, in fact, solves all our problems. To understand this, we have to be on the verge. If there is a relative doubt about the whole process, we are not ready for this step into the unknown.

In awareness meditation, consciousness becomes aware of consciousness. It finds nothing except consciousness, but a slight doubt occurs, an uncertainty; “Is this pure consciousness?” We aren’t completely confident. There is neither knowing nor not knowing; neither existence nor non-existence. It’s like opening a door or looking through a window; we scan the scene. Seeing is present, but we aren’t sure yet what we are seeing.

That is it.
Pure consciousness is like that.
It’s not captured by the glue of projections yet.

It’s an in-between state of knowing and not knowing. Why? Feeling confident that “This is it!” is a duality – a just ‘off’, not-so-perfect purity (which is a good state, and part of the process).

It is in knowing unknowingness that knowingness actually occurs.
A slight uncertainty in the experience is fully transparent.
This is how we make do and mend the mind with clarity.

Emptiness sees through everything:
all our projections
– and even itself.

LIVING WITH DEMONS

Living With Demons

Demons like nothing better than to dislike.
It is their raison d’être, their sole purpose.

Demons lie in ambush waiting to exploit any situation.

Sounds familiar?

We have to make judgements in order to survive, but these judgements aren’t the same as liking and disliking; it is about balance. “Not too tight and not too loose” – Buddha.

When we succumb to likes and dislikes on the see-saw of emotions, the demons make an appearance.

It’s important to remember that demons arise within our relative reality, never in ultimate reality. To remain balanced, we have to take care of both our material welfare and spiritual welfare.

We may recognise when inner demons make an appearance, coming to light within our mind, but now we experience the demons arising within others – and we find that we are living with demons 😀

These demons now become our precious teachers.
Fools who want to run the show reveal their raison d’être
– to exploit, and get a reaction.

FROM DEPENDENCE TO INDEPENDENCE

From Dependence To Independence

The antidote to our obsessive, materialistic life.

The whole point of spiritual teachings is to become independent:
free from others’ limitations.

Teachings are not a set piece to learn; we each learn sequentially through experience. There are levels of realisation of the ‘words’, but it is personal experience that leads us to the next level of realisation, which a teacher cannot do for us.

The key is conflict.

Funnily enough, it is the criticism that we generate that can be fundamental to change taking place. When we alternate between panoramic view and focused view (see both the big and individual effects) we realise that this criticism is all about me … “Ah ha! There I go again!” There is no need to have to let go as natural spaciousness then occurs spontaneously, and letting go is automatic. Putting it simply, we grow up.

Spiritual teachings are about the nature of our mind; our essence rather than the teacher’s. This is why the Buddha said, “Test the teaching for yourself.”

We keep falling into the same (huge) trap of spiritual dependency. Until we are independent, we are not free. Any teacher of any subject will be happy that someone understands, and goes off and lives a satisfied and fulfilled life. Unfortunately, as spiritual groups, we are encouraged to become attached – especially to the teacher – and this creates fear and competitiveness, and therefore guilt that we aren’t good enough. This is why we doubt.

We surround a teacher with holiness that actually separates us, creating insecurities that make us feel needy. We don’t even allow ourselves to question if this particular path is practical for us – and a teacher certainly won’t say, “Try a different path.”

So we become spiritually attached, wanting to be accepted by the elite inner circle, and full of hope, waiting for the guru to see our good qualities. You know what I mean? It’s what humans do … queue!

This holiness is the pure consciousness, empty cognisance, pure perception that surround our illusory self image.

Holiness is to be whole, complete, illumined, having the light on.
We are living holiness – when we remember
😀

Do we follow the queue?
Or do we realise original ordinariness now?!

IS THAT ALL THERE IS?

Is That All There Is?

If we believe we are our thoughts,
that is all there is to life.
If we realise we are pure consciousness,
that is all there is to life.

Belief limits our potential,
and sets the pattern of our mind.
Realisation actuates our enlightened potential,
and frees the pattern of our mind.

Believing is the foundation of compassion for the selected.
Realisation is the foundation of compassion for all.

It all depends to what we refer.
Are we referring to conventional, conformative generalisations?
Or are we referring to the unconventional, not based on beliefs and generalisations?

It is important to consider that, from an enlightened point of view, most of this entire planet is unenlightened. Do we follow the unenlightened and conform, or do we follow the enlightened who have not conformed?

Christ wasn’t Christian.
Buddha wasn’t Buddhist.
They did not conform.

In conforming to the unenlightened, we will never realise our complete picture.
Question: if enlightenment is our reality, why do so few talk about this?
Answer: the unenlightened are busy conforming to the unenlightened.

That is all there is to conformity.
Emptiness is all there is to enlightenment.

HAVE OR ARE?

Have Or Are?
Complexity or simplicity?

Thinking we have consciousness,
we will never realise what we are.
Our collection of ideas is our reality.

Realising we are consciousness,
consciousness is our reality.
Nothing other.

Arisings are now within consciousness and are not separate,
as with the moon reflected in a pool.

CONFUSING CONSCIOUSNESS

Confusing Consciousness

Confusing consciousness confuses us.
Do we have consciousness, or are we consciousness?

Two paths that lead in opposite directions.
Because of this, we only communicate on a relative level.

True communication is rare.

Most humans believe that consciousness is just an organ of perception. This isn’t the complete picture, as consciousness can realise its true reality, its enlightened reality.

If we reason that we are the sum total of our perception, we may think that the more we perceive, the cleverer we are. The cleverer the ego? Clinging to ideas, we become more gross in absolute terms.

From the Dharma point of view, we are consciousness, pure and simple. How did this change into a gross consciousness?

Let’s take a closer look:

We are born with particular unique, subtle tendencies. Whether this due to previous lives or just one of those things, what matters is that we have certain inclinations that are different from others. In general, we are – more or less – open books but, depending on our upbringing, we are influenced by local and cultural ideas, and either go along with these or reject them – more or less. If we don’t question the direction in which we are heading, we will follow the collective in its belief that we have consciousness – and join a world of chaos, competitive confusion and indifference.

A time will come when each of us will question our current path or way of life.

DEBT

Debt
Debt is karma

Our world has become over-excited and over-loaded due to misguided thinking; we buy into beliefs at the drop of a hat and this maintains our reliance, and we become indebted. This neediness builds and maintains our karmic, habitual attitude where we lead a life projected by others.

We borrow fantasies and live them. Debt and karma have to be repaid: until then, we are owned. Our problem is that we have become so reliant that the debt compounds, and it may take our entire life to repay this debt. It’s like trying to lose weight – old habits return. As long as we have to keep paying, we are owned. We get into a relationship, and that relationship owns us. Religion is like that.

If we live beyond our means, we get into debt and pay for it. The donkey’s carrot is the dream job, the dream lifestyle, the dream car, the dream family … the dream money … the dream life. Everything is based on suggestion, and our consent. There is gross advertising and subversive indoctrination – “Better yourself”; “Push yourself”; “Improve your life”; “Increase others’ profits and power”.

Realisation is the way out of the debt of karma, when we stop re-enacting the past as we no longer believe this is all real and this is all that there is. The debt is repaid.

The practice of meditation is seeing through all the crap – even the meditation crap.
Crap: unwanted articles.

Meditation isn’t an adornment to our lifestyle.
Meditation is seeing clearly without attitude, without karma, without self!

Consciousness has no karmic debt;
karmic debt is that which we hold on to in the mind.

Consciousness: where would we be without it?
Gone, gone, gone beyond*!
😀

It’s qIt’s quite a shock to realise that we are living in a dream world.

*from the Heart Sutra

THEY KNEW THE TRUTH THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO

They Knew The Truth Thousands Of Years Ago

So what has happened?
Only you can decide.

The truth was – and is – that we are beings of consciousness. We are the very essence of consciousness, pure and simple. Consciousness has no needs but, due to confused understanding, it took on an embodiment which has requirements in order to survive. Some realise this and some do not. For those who do realise their true nature, they understand that they are here to bring an end to negative propensities.

We are more than just human beings trying to compete with one another. Our reality has been downgraded into trivial pursuits, as we are confused about what life is actually about, which is mutual support in humanity’s endeavour to realise our truth.

It isn’t easy finding information about the nature of consciousness. It’s described as just a state of awareness that responds to our surroundings – an organ of perception for us to use. This definition is incomplete, and turns consciousness away from further inner investigation.

Why should we bother?
When we realise that we are free beings,
then no one can control us.
That is what it’s all about.
We are now free thinkers.

How are we controlled?
Through fear and disorientation.
Crimes against humanity limit freedom
using any suitable situation to facilitate power over society.

THE MISGUIDED TALE OF TWO EXTREMES

The Misguided Tale Of Two Extremes

…its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received…”

The historical trick has always been to divide and conquer, and thereby regulate. This is why we have to be prepared psychologically to realise our inner wisdom in an age of extremely worrying and foolish times.

For that reason, it is the best of times to progress towards our enlightened reality. Fools believe in extremes, while the wise stay in the middle, “neither too tight nor too loose”- Buddha.

A Tale of Two Cities (1859);
a historical novel by Charles Dickens.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,
it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity,
it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,
it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us, we had nothing before us,
we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way
– in short, the period was so far like the present period,
that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received,
for good or for evil
, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”

= very good and very bad!

Some are having a very good time
Some are having a very bad time.

LIFE WITH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Life With Fruit And Vegetables

There are two sides to our being:
Fruit; the realisation of our true nature, which is pure consciousness.
Vegetable; ignorance of our true nature, which is pure consciousness.

We are brought up to think that we are fruit when, in fact, we are a vegetable 😀
Dissatisfied with being a vegetable, we want our life to become fruitful.

It is in the recognition that we have become vegetables that we can realise our potential of being fruit. The product of any growth is to realise its function. Although a potato is called a vegetable, its fruitfulness is the delicious tuber.

Life become fruitful when we realise that we no longer need to play the witless vegetable. We are, indeed, wise beyond compare. Life is our symbolic teacher of reality, and this doesn’t only have to be in words. Fruit is everywhere – and so are vegetables 😀

It doesn’t matter what we associate with in life, all appearances and recognition are indivisible from the one truth – that everything is only known by virtue of pure consciousness. In that moment of seeing, there are no concepts involved. No thinking, and so no judgements or reactions.

The vegetable realises its true potential,
and life becomes fruitful.

Vegetables may think fruit fools,
but a jester knows how to juggle
obscurities and insight.

TAKING CARE OF OUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Taking Care Of Our Emotional Health

We often succumb to feeling down or flat – sometimes for no reason – and that goes for when we feel happy for no reason too. It’s karmic. Karma is our stored propensity from past experiences and reactions and, as a result, a ‘feeling’ just comes over us.

The one thing that our mental health doesn’t need (and which is always offered to us) is a pick-me-up or antidote to make us feel better, when it is our karmic, clinging mind that needs seeing to, because it is the very cause of dissatisfaction! Making ourself (our mind) feel better is a temporary measure that sows seeds for further up-and-down times. The reason we feel down is our habitual, karmic reaction of criticism; instead of complaining, we need to do something about it, but first we need to find the cause.

It is the chasing after happiness that is the cause of suffering as we do not recognise that our natural state is already happy. Consciousness itself is neutral. It neither wants to be happy or wants to be unhappy; it’s quite satisfied with what it is. We may need to feel good, to feel right, but that is associated with conventional subjectiveness, which is our constant ‘make-me-happy programme’.

Our true, emotional wellbeing derives from EQ – emotional quotient – as opposed to IQ – our intelligence quotient which indicates how clever we are.

EQ is our ability to empathise with others and act to bring about inner balance, inner peace and inner happiness. This is more important than IQ, which might make us seem clever but doesn’t bring happiness.

Our EQ is the level of our ability to understand our self – our inner ‘muckraker’ that is a product from our past. This muckraker finds fault, complains, blames, grumbles, moans, whines, kvetches … because life isn’t as good as we think it should be.

We can get out of the muckraking race and lead a simple life. Getting out may take some time as we’ve made it so complicated, but least we have a goal. We can take care of our emotional health when we see that all those negative emotions are actually wisdoms. They don’t tell you that, do they?

This blog goes into great detail about this subject. Basically, in the very first instant of an arising of emotion such as anger or fear or pride, consciousness brightens, and the mind is illuminated. That is the clear light of wisdom that reminds us that we are, first and foremost ,pure consciousness able to perceive without judgement. That is our original being. It’s a matter of catching that moment before reactions take over. Through practice, we become familiar with this first moment. Beginner mind, Zen mind!

The promotion of IQ turns us into clever performers.
The promotion of EQ turns us into ordinary healers.

RECOVERING EGOHOLIC

Recovering Egoholic
😀

Hi. I’m Tony and I’m a recovering egoholic.
I’ve felt crap all my life, and been very angry.
The only help available was pretence,
fuelled by fear of not conforming.

Copying other spiritual inmates
made me feel even worse.

How did I start to recover?

I took another look at the array of teachings,
and realised that everyone is right
from their point of view and at their level of understanding.

So what was wrong?
My criticism.

When we acknowledge that others’ expression has no permanent reality,
we realise that the ultimate source of truth is consciousness
that isn’t based on anything.

NB. I’m no longer angry and I no longer feel like crap.
Recovering egoholics do not take one day at a time:
they take each moment at a time.

HOW DO WE TEST A TEACHER?

How Do We Test A Teacher?

We are told to take a close look at the teacher before we commit ourselves, but how do we know if a teacher is suitable for our needs? Tricky. Just because someone is called a teacher doesn’t mean they are; they could just be someone who reads and repeats text without explaining its practical use.

Everything depends on our understanding, and how we see things. It is we who give another the authority to teach. Names, titles, palaces, temples, gompas have to mean something to us, rather than meaning something to others. We should not just follow others.

Is the person compatible?
Compatible: from medieval Latin compatibilis, from compati -suffer with. To be empathetic.

More importantly, are the students able to be empathetic? ‘Selflessness’ can very easily turn into indifference.

The problem is teacher worship, guru worship. That, in itself, takes away any understanding of others’ needs – or the ability to listen without judgement. Lack of compassion is fear, whereas the hallmark of any genuine teaching is genuine compassion.

Don’t take the Buddha’s word for it.
Don’t take the teacher’s word for it.
Don’t take a student’s word for it.
Don’t take my word for it.
Don’t even take your own word for it.

Start with the genuine experience of realisation beyond words.
When we take care, we are the ones in charge.

There is no greater teaching or teacher
than unconditional caring.
Love.

WE EACH PROGRESS IN OUR OWN WAY

We Each Progress In Our Own Way

We each progress in our own way.
All we need is tenacity.

Tenacity comes from understanding, experience and a realisation that there is but one truth, and that is consciousness itself. It does not matter what we do, consciousness is always present. If we go online to read about truth, this subject can go off in many directions. Truth-seeking philosophers and universities may seek the truth about this and that, but they forget that consciousness came first. Many spiritual traditions care more about their display than simple truth that isn’t reliant on any thing.

So, for truth, we have to look into consciousness. We do this on our own, as no one else can do it for us. The confusion now arises, “Who are we?” We are the very essence of consciousness. Pure and simple.

All we have to do is stop, and see, smell, taste, touch, hear. The senses are non-conceptual – there is no thinking involved. That direct experience is pure perception, pure consciousness. Pure and simple. That is what we are – it’s not who we are. Who comes along a moment later to claim the event of sensation.

We keep using the word ‘meditation’ but, when we meditate, all we should be doing is shutting up, rather than closing down. There may be loads of methods, jargon, elaborations and confusion, but it all comes to the one point of purely being. Meditation is simply about noticing, and dropping whatever is noticed. We can come back to whatever was noticed when we reflect.

It’s all about consciousness being in union with its essence; purity. The word ‘purity’ needn’t be a scary word, or a holy word. It simply means unadulterated – not mixed or diluted with any different or extra elements; complete and absolute.

The moment when we sneeze, there is nothing to think about. That is pure experience. That’s it! The moment we walk through a door and just survey the scene – that’s it! The moment when … we give up!

BEING WATCHED? WATCH BACK!

Being Watched? Watch Back!

Negative events are promoted and meant to be seen so that ‘watchers’ can monitor how we react and how far we can be pushed. Propaganda (misleading information that promotes an idea) can turn ordinary people into narcissistic and sociopathic trolls.

Internet trolls – which includes all media – make intentionally inflammatory statements to elicit strong emotional reactions, or to steer the conversation off-topic, making it personal. This psychology can come in many forms from ordinary low-level trolls to highly sophisticated psychologists behind political agenda.

These events are managed to preoccupy us so that we forget we’re being watched. We’re so accustomed to reacting online that this surveillance becomes invisible when integrated into our culture, our custom – turning propaganda into fashion.

What can we do about this? Watch back!

Statements say more about the author than the actual statement did. Look out for the process of manipulation and suggestion and observe how your own and others’ minds react, and how a situation can escalate, teased out for further manipulation. It’s all too easy to take on subliminal ideas.

This can turn ordinary people into obedient, unempathetic narcissists, and narcissists know how to play games; they become conduits of the original propaganda, unwittingly passing it on. Then we are on a downward slope to group narcissism, xenophobia, sociopathic behaviour, supremacism and psychopathy.

Propaganda misleads to make perpetrators feel innocent of the act, but they are no different from the instigator, although the intensity of karma will be different. An example of this; the instigators made the decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Looking back at the site, the co-pilot (the perpetrator) exclaimed, “My God. What have we done?”

Love can turn to dislike, then to fear and ultimately hatred when we become manipulated or pushed. To understand this more, read about how the six neurotic psychological realms work from the Tibetan Buddhist viewpoint. How we work! *

Know your own mind.
Watch the inner watcher
– consciousness itself –
reacting.

Ask not what your mind can do for you,
but what you can do for your mind
😀

Our mind needs clarity, free from bias.

Meditation is the way to see clearly – if meditation is done properly. In empty awareness, which is uncontaminated consciousness, there is nothing to watch, as we are that which watches. Always remember, we are free in the very moment of seeing.

.

.

*The Six Realms

Tibetan text mentions six types of neurotic human characteristics: God, Jealous god, Human, Animal, Hungry ghost and Hell being, each of which correspond to the six negative emotions of pride, envy, desire, ignorance, stupidity and anger.

We all have a tendency to one or more of these characteristics, although we also move sequentially through these state all the time.

God realm ……………………… have it all, but will suffer when everything is gone

Jealous god realm ………….  build defences around themselves, are competitive, and argue

Human realm ………………… passion

Animal realm ………………… lack of humour, serious

Hungry ghost realm ……….  greed

Hell being realm ……………  frozen

But, as usual, there is the other side – each realm also corresponds to one of the five enlightened qualities.

We believe whatever comes into our mind to be real, when it is just another neurotic state.
When noticed, however, this neurotic state becomes pure light, pure consciousness.

NOTHING IS PERMANENT

Nothing Is Permanent

This has been said many times before, but it’s worthwhile reflecting on it so that we remember what reality is really is.

If things were permanent, then they could not change – and obviously, things do change. Due to attraction and repulsion, things are created, dwell, and come apart, ready to change into something else.

Things have no permanent existence because they are actually empty space occupied by temporary elements.

Consciousness is like that; cognisant unoccupied space. That unchanging cognisant unoccupied space is what we are. Thoughts are merely ever-changing elements within this.

When consciousness fixates on phenomena, however, a self identity is created, which becomes judgemental about temporary phenomena. It is this constant judging that causes us excitement and suffering.

When we realise this, then we cannot become so attached, and are free to see the beauty in how things change. Enemies become friends. Negative emotions become wisdom.

By acknowledging change, we ascend the levels.
When we separate ourselves and find fault,
we descend the levels, play the victim and suffer.

All we have to do is note which way we are facing,
and change just happens.
“We are free in the moment of seeing.”

Permanent: remain unchanged indefinitely.

WISDOM AND POWER

Wisdom And Power

Wisdom is silent awareness.
Power is talkative awareness.

Wisdom is ultimate power.
For power to become ultimate power,
it must surrender power.

The Buddha had to make this choice;
any Buddha has to make this choice.

Mara – the power in our mind – has its likes and dislikes.
This power cannot be subjugated
as that would give it a reality.
Mara loses its power only when it is recognised
within the space of compassion.

We have a choice:
worship power or worship wisdom.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PROBLEMS TO WORRY ABOUT

There Will Always Be Problems To Worry About

As long as we believe that we need to solve these problems, there will be problems to worry about. As all things must pass, so why worry? It’s like watching the tide come in and go out; it’s what it does. Unenlightened humans stick to things and become bound; it’s what we do.

If we could get rid of all those who create problems, there would be none of us left 😀
It’s acknowledging the very cause of problems that is the path to enlightenment.
The cause is believing that problems are real, while consciousness sits and watches.

GETTING OVER-EXCITED ABOUT THIS WORLD

Getting Over-Excited About This World

Humans can always be stirred up about something and,
in relative terms,
this is understandable.
Having identified one problem, another will come along
and we compound it.

Throw a pebble in the water and watch the ripple effect.

How on earth do we release ourselves from this ripple?
Know that the ripple effect takes place in the mind:
We become stirred up.

In actuality, it is the mind that becomes over-excited
with retaliations.

When the mind is allowed to settle,
we are free to see clearly.

BEING ORGANISED

Being Organised
Being designed.

The trick of creating chaos and then seizing power
under the pretence of putting things back in order
is a tried and true method of deception and manipulation.

It’s the meaning behind the Latin motto:
ORDO AB CHAO meaning ORDER OUT OF CHAOS.

Create dis-order so the people will demand order.
The price of order always entails a handing over of control
and loss of freedom on the part of the citizenry.
Out of ‘chaos’ comes ‘order’.

When we become dependent, we need organising.
When recognised as the obstacle to our freedom,
karma (our addictive dependency) is our teacher.

I’M SELFISH

I’m Selfish

I thought I had problems.
I now realise that I am blessed.
I’m sorry for having taken everything for granted.

Redemption: clearing one’s debt.
Feeling fulfilled, blessed, fully satisfied, relieved.

I cannot believe in a God,
but believers feel fulfilled, blessed, fully satisfied, relieved.
In the moment of fulfilment, how can I say we are different!

TEACHER KARMA, KARMA TEACHER

Teacher Karma, Karma Teacher

Through karma, we find a teacher.
Through a teacher, we realise that karma is our teacher.
Karma is reactions.

As reactions diminish, karma diminishes.
That is the path to enlightenment.

Our reactions diminish due to us realising
that they have no permanent existence.

Our reactions tells us
what we need to know about our confusion –
that it was all in the mind.

Acknowledging consciousness is pure consciousness.
Teacher and karma have never been separated.
That is the path to enlightenment.

KNOWING FACT FROM FICTION

Knowing Fact From Fiction

Tricky.

So-called facts are about the relative, physical world.
Relative refers to whatever we (absolute consciousness) relate to.

The physical universe is transient and impermanent and thus,
it has no absolute reality as things come and go.
From this perspective, calling anything in the physical world a ‘fact’ is fiction:
it is the natural laws of attraction and repulsion
– brought about by causes and conditions –
a thing that is known or proved to be true.

True: according to reality.
Reality: the state of things as they actually exist = non existent
Things: inanimate material objects as distinct from a living sentient being.
Sentient beings: able to perceive or feel things.
Perceiving: being aware, conscious.

Reality does not change;
only things change, while consciousness does not.
Everything has only an illusion of reality.

Promoting a belief that fiction is fact
is deceitful, and a sin.
Sin: an act regarded as a serious fault, offence, or omission.

What sort of world do we want to live in?
A sin-bin?

Sin-bin: a place where offenders are sent
for detention, punishment, or rehabilitation.

Facts are all in the mind,
and are therefore fiction.
The only reality that is provable is pure awareness.

‘JOBSWORTHS’ = GROUPTHINK

‘Jobsworths’ = Groupthink
= limitations = fear = lack of empathy

Jobsworth: Anyone who upholds petty rules, even at the expense of humanity or common sense.

This comes from the saying, “It’s more than my job’s worth to break the rules” – which is to say, I was only obeying orders.”

A time comes when an individual decides to think for themselves. This, of course, has consequences. We may all consider that we do think for ourselves, but in reality, this is a rare occurrence.

If we are to realise the reality of truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, then we will be at odds with the collective mind set of groupthink that believes it already knows because of what it’s been told.

Human collectives of all kinds are prone to a mentality that values consensus and conformity above all else while, at the same time, discouraging individuality. This is an oxymoron, because we all actually admire great scientists, great writers, great musicians, great artists and great spiritual teachers who have all worked alone.

As a society, the groupthink (and even minority-groupthink) mentality discourages individuals who don’t conform or promote the ideals of the group. This limits and confuses thinking.

In order to work independently in solitude, where the mind is free to realise truth without outside pressures, we need mental space to meditate and think expansively to work through the options, without thought-police or influencers looking over our shoulder.

Unanimity is an illusion perpetrated by collectivists whose primary goal is to control; the way in which they exert control is by putting pressure on dissenters and rewarding fellow believers. They are society’s self-appointed minders who push conformity to foster the only beliefs that they know.

Realising our enlightened essence
needs freedom from both conformity and extremism.

The more we meditate and realise
our truth nature of compassionate intelligence,
the less hostility there will be in the world.

Renunciation is a matter of relinquishing those things which cause the limitations that create attachment, jealousy, aggression etc.

Compassion: we know that every sentient being is perfect and free and so, when someone ignores this fact, compassion arises because we know that ignorance is relative and temporary.

Devotion is not a dualistic dependency worshipping an external god. We are potentially Buddha, wishing to be like Buddha. We are not something separate from Buddha. We have always been Buddha, free from limitations.

We have been exploring and adventuring – and we haven’t got very far! We’ll never stop struggling until we become Buddha, when mind has no more limitation.

We love freedom.
We dislike limitations.
Limitations are created by fear.

If the world was kindness itself
then we’d want to follow the groupthink.

But it isn’t is it?

THE LORD OF COMPASSION, CHENREZI, IS SO MUCH MORE

The Lord Of Compassion, Chenrezi, Is So Much More

Compassion: feeling or showing sympathy and concern for others; from ecclesiastical Latin compassio(n-), from compati ‘suffer with’ (thereby having empathy)

From a Buddhist perspective, compassion is practical. The mantra of Chenrezi (also known as Avalokitesvara) is OM MANI PEME HUM. This represents the unity of wisdom and compassion, and is indeed the path to enlightenment. The sounds symbolise the six perfections of generosity, patience, conscience, discipline, concentration and transcendent wisdom. The first five apply to all paths of decency, but it is the sixth transcendent wisdom that changes everything as this is pure awareness, the heart of consciousness itself. We are the wisdom of compassion. We are walking, talking Dharma.

Compassion is our protection in these difficult and challenging times. We first apply the five perfections to our self to make sure that we are decent people; then, we can realise that which is aware of these relative perfections, which is our absolute nature of pure awareness. Alternatively, we can realise – or be instructed in – directly seeing the nature of mind – transcendent wisdom – and use the other five perfections to sustain this view.

It all comes down to empathy. Been there, done that, regret, want to move on. When we become decent people and know our true reality, we are then on our path to enlightenment. We just have to remember what we are about, without being distracted by elaborations.

Remembering the six perfections of compassion is our protection. All we can do is pass this on.

Compassion Diminishes Karma

How do we know when karma is losing its effect?
We become less judgemental, and gain more inspirational joy.

We react less, not taking sides.
Our pattern of behaviour changes because our view changes.

This doesn’t mean we don’t notice karmic effect,
but we are more generous, patient, moral, disciplined and concentrated,
and understand transcendent knowledge.

All Media

Our habitual reaction is karma.
All media relies on our reactions.

The more we react,
the more our karmic behaviour controls us.

If we know this,
we also know that others know this!

Compassionate activity releases us.
Wake up, and enlighten the darkness.

LOBBING THE BRICK

Lobbing The Brick

There is a story/joke: a man visits an asylum, and is shown around by a nurse. He meets one of the inmates who’s gardening, and chats with him. The gardener was eloquent, calm and polite, and knew all about gardening and the natural world.

The visitor turned to the nurse and said, “This man shouldn’t be here!” The gardener interjected, “No, I shouldn’t be here! Thank you.” The nurse smiled and nodded, and the visitor promised to speak to the authorities about the man’s case. The two of them walked away, and a moment later, a brick hit the visitor on the back of the head … and the gardener shouted after him, “You won’t forget, will you?”

Five minutes with anyone is fine, and then we recognise the biased opinions and fixations – and the brick.

The potential of enlightenment is within every sentient being, but realisation of this has to be acknowledged through insight, in order for compassion to express itself. We need to remember this when we are about to lob our brick!

SEEKING THE TRUTH

Seeking The Truth

In seeking the truth, we realise that truth is consciousness itself for, without consciousness, nothing would be known. That is our reality because that is our constant; everything else is impermanent and, as such, has no inherent reality. Meditation is the vehicle to realise the non-duality of pure consciousness.

Once we realise pure consciousness, all fixations and negative emotions are seen as obstructing this clear view, and become an instant, perfect reminder of our pure state. As appearances and recognition are simultaneous, that is non-duality. Our karma (fixations and negative emotions) becomes our perfect teacher.

EARTH: DREAM? NIGHTMARE? ENLIGHTENED POTENTIAL?

Earth: Dream? Nightmare? Enlightened Potential?

We are born into a world of dreams that create nightmares.
The realisation of these nightmares becomes the potential for enlightenment.

Simply put; we desire, we fear, we suffer, we look for the cause of that suffering. The cause of suffering is our clinging to those dreams about our self identity.

Our work is to transform those dreams and nightmares into enlightenment. How do we do this? There is no requirement to be religious or spiritual: we just need to see clearly that our true reality – which is pure consciousness – is already present and enlightened.

We are only here due to karma, which is our cloud of unknowingness.

This introduces the question of life before birth. We do not know what happens after death: others can tell us things about death, but we do not know.We can, however, infer, and that makes a great difference to the way in which we live.

Both the dream and the nightmare cost the earth.

Enlightenment costs nothing.
The earth should not be exploited by greed.

“We cannot serve both Truth and Mammon.”

HOW TO HEAL THE WORLD OF EVIL

How To Heal The World Of Evil

Don’t be part of the spin,
the exaggerations, and the deceptions.

We may think that we are just listening to the news. First, news comes from chosen ‘experts’ and then politicians put their spin on it; this is expressed through the spin of selected mainstream media, and then social media runs with these stories, and we in turn add our spin and take sides. News is information about current events, but current events have a past and current events create our future news. News just a psychological meme meant to be passed around society.

Is all news fake?

.

Spin is a form of propaganda, achieved through knowingly providing a biased interpretation of an event to influence public opinion, using tactics aimed to shape ideas in society.

Overt and covert spin tactics:

Overt refers to standard public relations tactics, such as writing press releases, staging events, giving speeches and appearing in the media.

Covert, on the other hand, refers to a range of cynical techniques to manage information – these are the more malign tactics most people associate with “spin”.

The list below contains tactics employed in a bid to exert control over the way the news media reports the message:

the leak: these are strategic leaks offered by politicians or their staff to journalists, in exchange for no scrutiny.

the freeze: punishing journalists for negative reporting

the spray: a form of bullying and intimidation, this is another way of punishing journalists for negative coverage.

the drip: the act of keeping favoured reporters on a drip of exclusive information

staying on message: the goal of every public appearance or interview by a politician the constant repetition of the same messages without answering questions

pivoting: this refers to politicians shifting away from a difficult question or issue to the one he or she wants to talk about

the vomit principle: this rule of thumb is widely referred to in political offices. The idea is that if you repeat something so often you feel like vomiting.

playing a dead bat: this refers to not responding to a media inquiry or giving a minimal response in an effort to kill the story

the truth, but not the whole truth: this refers to being selective with what one reveals, sharing only the most beneficial or least damaging information

throwing out the bodies/taking out the garbage: these tactics are used to disclose damaging information under the cover of a major distraction.

get rid of it now: the aim of this tactic is to release all of the damaging information on an issue at one time, so the negative story can be dealt with quickly rather than allowing it to bleed on for weeks in the media.

fire-breaking: setting up or staging a diversion to distract attention away from another issue. examples would be launching a new policy to distract from a negative issue in an attempt to shift the media’s attention

kite-flying: this means testing or floating an idea before making a commitment to announce it

feeding or starving a story: feeding a story means keeping it alive by commenting on it in the media. Starving a story means starving it of oxygen by not commenting on it. The theory being that after a while the media will get bored and move on

keeping out of the media/being a small target: this is a useful tactic if the politician is unpopular and affects the polls, has a controversial portfolio or is an accident-prone poor performer

flying under the radar: this refers to just quietly getting on with things without publicising it

dishing dirt: this is where old claims suddenly emerge publicly before or during an election in an effort to smear someone’s reputation. The “dirt” can come from outside or inside a party. It’s a tactic used to try to destroy someone’s career

dog-whistling: using specific subtle language and messages to target a particular section of the audience

wedging: this tactic involves raising an issue that is popular in the electorate and sensitive to the party you are opposing to “wedge” them in to a difficult position and sow division in the party.

There is only one reality, and that is the never-changing consciousness that is aware of the daily, ever-changing news in the mind. All ‘news’ distracts and diverts attention, keeping us occupied and addicted. It can also cause division and violence.

Consciousness can read between the lines.
It sees where ‘news’ comes from
and where it is going.

Just watch how we become distracted,
and are taken in.

And we thought we were just reading the news!

THE SILENT ME

The Silent Me

The silent me
and the talkative me.

We may be confused about consciousness as we cannot give up the idea of a me, and think, “I have consciousness.”

This is understandable in the materialistic existence of things that I do, I think and I say. We identify with our thoughts, and think that we are those thoughts. We see consciousness as something that allows us to perceive, so the more information we collect, the greater and more intelligent we think we are, and the more established the ego. This is okay if that’s what we want – along with all the aloofness that goes with it.

Alternatively, there is another way to see consciousness; that we are consciousness, rather than having consciousness. It is realising that consciousness has always sat quietly throughout life, observing passing thoughts. The pure, silent me observes the talkative me.

“Two birds sat in a tree;
one (lower personality self) pecked of the fruit
while the other (higher wisdom Self)
sat and watched”.
-Upanishads

In Buddhism there is neither self nor Self,
but deluded consciousness and pure consciousness.

Can you see any difference?
😀

Different exoteric traditions see the spirit differently.
Different esoteric traditions have the same spirit.
We don’t need to be separated.

INTELLECTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND REALISATION

Intellectual Understanding and Realisation

Intellectual understanding says much.
Realisation says nothing.

Consciousness has nothing to say; it is merely aware. Through desire or aversion, however, consciousness adopts thoughts and clings to these, obscuring raw experience.

It is when consciousness silently looks in on itself and finds nothing but consciousness, that realisation takes place. This realisation is the recognition that consciousness has always been empty of contaminating thoughts that have restricted our potential. Consciousness realises that it has always been pure before the occurrence of thoughts, and that is the end of our search. Until enlightenment we are still not released from our biased behaviour, however, due to subtle desires and aversions (our karmic inclinations).

Intellectual understanding creates a clash of chattering minds.
Realisation is a union of silent hearts.
Compassion is a meeting of both hearts and minds.

A true meeting takes place in silence,
within the realisation and recognition
that nothing needs to said.

HAPPINESS IS A FEELING OF RELIEF

Happiness Is A Feeling Of Relief

When we feel alleviated – lightened – the burden has gone.
That’s a good step to becoming en-lightened.

Isn’t that moment, free of worry, wonderful?
What else can happiness be?

We may become old and sick, and die
– that’s natural-
but ever-present consciousness is actually free of worry
– and that’s natural too.

It is thinking and worrying about
something we cannot change
that makes us unhappy.

The secret is to be grateful for where we are;
whether our past was fortunate or unfortunate,
it brought us to this point.

To want more is to create worries and unhappiness.
All we can do is help others in our own unique way.

Relief: late Middle English: from Old French, from relever ‘raise up, relieve’, from Latin relevare ‘raise again, alleviate’.
Lev: comes from Latin (levis levare) which means ‘light’ (in weight).
This root includes ‘levity’ ‘elevate’ ‘alleviate’ and ‘levitate’ to rise up, to be above.

When we talk about transcending, or ascending, or going up to heaven – or even levitating – this could mean that we are no longer being weighed down. If so, then we are already in heaven or enlightened, or whatever we want to call it. Isn’t happiness just a relief from having a problem?

Of course, the relief doesn’t last as there is always another situation to deal with, but we gradually start to appreciate that all things must come to pass!
So why worry? Be happy 😀

This world in which we live
will continue to create things
for us to worry about.

Actually, that is exactly what it does!

CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

Crimes Against Humanity

Large-scale events, whether natural or otherwise, create a cause and effect which seems to downgrade, limit and restructure society. We can see this happening now, and our recent history amplifies this. The powerful want more power and this, in turn, denies humanity its liberty. This pattern of behaviour occurs time and time again, causing collective karma that controls us, whether through culture, politics or military might. As long as we consent to this state of play, we are part of karmic catastrophe.

For this reason, humans throughout the ages have sought freedom through thought and expression, with many turning to the source of consciousness to realise that we are not an inherent part of this karmic enterprise. It is here that our search can be subverted, and consciousness becomes inverted into believing instead of knowing.

We all have the same human frailties of likes and dislikes that are profiled and registered online, these frailties can be used against us. This is the crime against humanity.

What can we do?

We have to be aware that our mind is not our own as we have merely been following our crowd, our groupthink. People are suffering because of indifference, hope and fear which control our behaviour – we do it to ourselves by ignoring these emotional parasites.

Negative emotions of ignorance, desire, aversion, pride and jealousy can be turned on their heads now, and will no longer dominate. In the very first moment of an emotion arising, consciousness sees clearly and the mind brightens for that instant. That clear seeing is wisdom, and in that moment we are free, liberated from karmic effects. We are seeing without both our dark glasses and our rose-coloured spectacles.

Our problem is referring to memory habitually; judgements arise, and we are back, caught and held in our muddy dungeon.

Awareness is the key to this dark dungeon of existence. We have the choice either to open the door or keep it locked. This is why, for example, in some countries we are policed by consent, whereas in other countries, policing is enforced.

No one can take consciousness away;
it can only be distracted.

The source of consciousness is its purity
– it is empty of ideas –
and that is our protection

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.”

OUR ECHO CHAMBER

Our Echo Chamber

Our mind is an echo chamber
that creates its own environment.

Echo chamber: an environment in which a person encounters only beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own, so that their existing views are reinforced and alternative ideas are not considered.

In this way, we acquire a social I; this is the validation we get back from others. We seek out those who think in the same way, in order to find our place.

Groupthink requires individuals to avoid raising controversial issues or alternative solutions and, as a result, there is loss of individual creativity, uniqueness and independent thinking.  Members of a group can often feel peer pressure to “go along with the crowd” in fear of rocking the boat and being kicked out. We learn to repeat the same scenarios, and the same ideas echo in our minds.

How often can we be honest in our group? We are required to adopt the consensus. The opposite of consensus is questioning; when we question, we stop the tinkling bell in our mind by taking the clanger out. All that remains is the silence and clarity of emptiness 😀

OUR ULTIMATE POTENTIAL

Our Ultimate Potential

Our ultimate potential is acknowledged
through our human manifestation.

Our ultimate reality is perfect consciousness.
Our human manifestation is biased consciousness.

Our human manifestation is our karmic teacher
that reminds us when we stray
from perfect consciousness.

This doesn’t change us;
it changes our behaviour, which reduces the effect of karma
until there is no more biased behaviour.

In this way, we can be free to make the most of life.

WITHOUT MUD, THERE IS NO LOTUS

Without Mud, There Is No Lotus

Without acknowledging dissatisfaction,
there can be no enlightenment.

We are here precisely to get over our self, to transcend this echo chamber. Repeating thoughts are not our reality; that is just the mud talking.

The Buddha had a vision in which he saw the human race as a bed of lotus flowers. Some of the lotuses were still mired in the mud, while others were just emerging from it, and yet others were on the point of blooming. In other words, all people have the ability to unfold their potential, and some need just a little help to do so.

If we think, “Well, I’m okay”, then we haven’t noticed suffering, the cause of suffering, and the inability of people to resolve their suffering. By ignoring others’ plight and just getting on with our life, we remain indifferent, busying ourselves in futile diligence. It is said that those who die while dissatisfied and confused create the conditions for rebirth in an appropriate form and circumstance. This is why we make the most of life.

Enlightenment is arising from the mud into the full bloom of consciousness, realising that the mud does not exist but still aware of its illusory effects on the unsuspecting. This is why Bodhisattvas remain rooted in the mud of this illusion, and without them, these teachings would be closed to us.

The Point Of The Pointing Out Instruction

The point of the pointing out instruction

Realising this,
empathetic compassion arises.

CAN TEACHERS HELP?

Can Teachers Help?

Only the passing on of
transcendent knowledge can help us.

Teachers are conduits of this knowledge
for us to realise.

There are many teachers,
but one transcendent knowledge.

We are that non-dual, inexpressible knowledge
that manifests as compassion.

Once this inexpressible knowledge is realised,
all there is to talk about is whatever obscures it.

Appreciate the knowledge that is always within,
rather than that which is without.

If we only appreciate that which is without,
we may depreciate that which is within.

It is our resolve
that clears all our karmic confusion.
A teacher cannot do this for us.

WALKING IN DARKNESS

Walking In Darkness

There are Dzogchen teachings everywhere;
it all depends on how we see.

In the New Testament, Corinthians 13 was written around 1,720 years ago, and is as true today as it was then – and even further back in time, as it’s timeless. Here, we are looking at line 12:

For now we see through a glass, darkly;
but then face to face: now I know in part;

Dzogchen teachings clarify this:
‘Through a glass darkly’ is seeing through our confusion of ideas.
‘Face to face’ is seeing directly = non-duality.
‘Now I know in part’ – we only know a part of our reality.
When we realise our true reality of pure consciousness,
we will know as the realised ones know.

When we do not recognise the light of wisdom – our natural clarity of consciousness – we walk in darkness. Everything that we do, say and think takes form within this darkness, as we are ignorant of our first reality. We’ve become so used to this confusion which creates chaos that we are expert ‘Samsaric gods’ living in darkness, with no time to stop and find the switch, which would illuminate the lamp that dispels darkness.

Beautiful words about the switch
are not the same as switching.

The switch is purely meditation, where we just stop doing and being something. There is, in fact, no meditator as there is no relating, and no reference point. It’s that simple. The darkness lifts, and our fixating thoughts drop away to reveal the self-existing light of clarity that has been present all the while. In darkness, we mistakenly take sides which fogs reality, and so we see darkly. Meditation is light, whether we experience the pleasant and unpleasant.

It is because we consent to just believe that we remain in darkness. We become predictable, as we are continually bumping into the same obstacles. It all depends on how we see; when we know we are walking in darkness, the light is on! It’s all about realising that we are this light. When we walk in light, we stop stumbling into fixations and doubts.

Corinthians 13

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity (TB – unconditional love without expectations of gain), these three; but the greatest of these is charity (TB – unconditional love without expectations of gain).

What more are we looking for?

KARMA IS COGNITIVE BIAS

Karma Is Cognitive Bias

We project according to our karmic filter, our perception bias, our cognitive bias. A hundred people will sit in a teaching, and won’t all hear it the same way.

From this perception, we create our own subjective reality, which is a constructed reality that dictates our behaviour. Cognitive biases may lead to distortion, inaccurate judgment, illogical interpretation – or what is broadly called ‘irrationality’. Unless we are enlightened, we are all subject to cognitive bias, and this is why we must check our motivations for whatever we think, say or know.

Even if we see clearly (and know the right words), this is only to a certain level of understanding, each of which may be correct but with the meaning changing at every level.
See https://www.rigpawiki.org/index.php?title=Nine_yanas

Whatever we say or do has consequences. Even if we are correct in our view, we still need empathetic compassion otherwise we may achieve the opposite effect of the one we intended.

In the media, we can see this happening every day, where the opposite effect is the one intended. The target is our reactions, our bias that controls us. It’s the ‘click bait game’ that’s so obvious but also dangerous as it can succeed in fuelling our bias.

There are many types of bias; this is a hugely underestimated subject. Here are just three: information bias, selection bias, and confounding bias. It all adds up to collective confusion.

You’ll laugh when you see this – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases

The answer?
Know your bias!

“We are free in the moment of seeing.”

LESSER SPIRITS (DEMONS) LIE IN AMBUSH

Lesser Spirits (Demons) Lie In Ambush

Demonic activity in the world comes in many shapes, levels and intensities … and teachings. From the point of view of consciousness, ‘Mara’ – or demonic activity – has nothing to do with external events; it concerns the reactive response in our own mind. Our likes and dislikes which have no reality.

Our lesser spirit lies in ambush, waiting to feed off situations, and so we only have to be aware of reaction in our own mind. Mara activity is absolute teaching!

“Don’t wander, don’t wander, place mindfulness on guard:
Along the road of distraction, Mara lies in ambush.
Mara is this mind, clinging to like and dislike,
So look into the essence of this magic, free from dualistic fixation.
Realise that your mind is unfabricated primal purity.
There is no Buddha elsewhere; look at your own face.
There is nothing else to search for; rest in your own place.
Non-meditation is spontaneous perfection, so capture the royal seat.”

Drubwang Tsoknyi Rinpoche 1st.

Demon: from Latin daemon, from Greek daimōn ‘deity, genius’; also from Latin daemonium ‘lesser or evil spirit’.

NEVER DOUBT THE PRESENCE OF PURE CONSCIOUSNESS

Never Doubt The Presence of Pure Consciousness

We have never been separated from pure consciousness;
we have just been looking the other way.

Looking the other way and finding no satisfaction, we doubt. Due to doubt, we cling even more to our ‘graven images’ (our ideas) for safety and adorn these, while at the same time obscuring the clarity of pure consciousness. We obscure the truth of our own ultimate reality. We become bound and wound-up.

Realisation is just a matter
of unwinding the stress
caused by doubt.

WORDS ARE NOT DIRECT EXPERIENCE

Words Are Not Direct Experience

To be mesmerised by words is to miss
direct experience beyond words.

Words are open to interpretation and commentary.
Direct experience is unmistakable pure consciousness itself,
expressionless as there is nothing to express.

Then why try to express?

We need to know
that relative and ultimate truth are different
and, at the same time, inseparable.
By virtue of one, the other is known,
like a mirror and its reflections.

In the present moment of non-duality,
it cannot be said that either the relative or ultimate
exist or do not exist.
