WHAT STARTS AN ARGUMENT?

What Starts An Argument?

What starts an argument?
Karma.
What ends an argument?
Recognising the effect of karma.

‘Karma’ is a Sanskrit word for our load of acquired ideas that affects our behaviour. In modern terms, it’s our programme ‘guide’, that runs and replays our entire life. It’s what makes us predictable.

When we fixate, we become intense. If meet someone who is also fixated, there is a clash of karma. The clash of ideasisn’t the problem; it’s the intensity that causes trouble as it transforms into a verbal weapon. Because we identify with our ideas so strongly, this build-up can explode at any moment when karma creates the perfect storm.

So what do we do?
Recognise what is happening, and wait. No reaction, no retaliation.
We rant when we see something as unjust. This is normal for human beings (and our chickens do the same thing!). Trying to put things right may even make things worse, because the whole situation then seems even more real, when it’s just about ideas. Holding on is hell.

We all just want to be heard.
The karma has to play itself out.
Merely wait.
Suddenly, we’ll wonder what the fuss was about.

Such trauma is very uncomfortable; it’s something that we don’t want to face, but it’s a special, cathartic moment of release.

Cathartic: early 17th century: via late Latin from Greek kathartikos, from katharsis ‘cleansing’.

Demons are said to cause trouble for practitioners: we become more sensitive and pick up more, so we need to be skilful. It’s just a spiritual hazard. 😀

These clashes can feel like a demon attack. Demons are ego, and ego does not exist. They’re just a mental flare ups and, if that is so, then that is wisdom. In the very first instant of anger, the mind brightens and illumines. That is pure wisdom, before our demon sets in 😀 The same applies to all negative emotions.

We do not need antidotes:
we just need to see clearly to neutralise the effects.

WHEN DID MY IGNORANCE START?

When Did My Ignorance Start?

The universe is infinite. Sentient beings are infinite, each having an enlightened essence that goes unnoticed. We are infinite consciousness. To ask, “When did my ignorance start?” is an impossible question to answer, as it always starts and ends now.

There may be dimensions, realms and planets that are more conducive to enlightenment, but here we are, now. We can only deal with now, which is a pretty good place to start as there is so much dissatisfaction! This is because we dwell in such an illusory state that we cannot “see the wood for the trees” – unable to understand a situation clearly because we are too involved in it. This involvement created a self image, which is our forest of ideas, all made out of emptiness.

Emptiness is our natural, pure state which is fully aware, before we become involved in thoughts of this and that. We use the method of meditation to arrive at emptiness, and then the method of meditation is dropped. We stop asking questions the moment we arrive. Enlightenment is “Stayin’ arrived!”

To see how ignorance starts, watch the moment in meditation when we become attracted to the feeling of meditation – and we find consciousness wandering off … again! 😀

THE PRACTICE OF MEDITATION = CLARITY AND CALM

The Practice Of Meditation = Clarity And Calm

Meditation brings about a simpler way of life that is satisfying; we do not succumb to the collective hopes and fears. Through clarity and calmness we see what is happening – and the consequences.

There is much in the world that divides people. Even if we could eliminate whatever we think is causing division, division will still remain. It’s what humans do, even though we call ourselves ‘social’ beings.

We may agree for five minutes, and then the divisions appear. There is no point in being disappointed or expecting anything else, as we all have different backgrounds and cultures. We just remain clear and calm, and from that view, we use whatever skills of empathy we have to deal with situations. Our countenance says more than words as it reflects how open or closed we are; an open face goes a long way towards healing.

There is a rightness about everything. When we complain about the traffic jam we’re part of, who are we going to blame? If we (consciousness) ignore consciousness, we will remain confused. By becoming involved, we are entangled in a sequence of events that must come to fruition.

Trungpa Rinpoche said, “When awaiting someone’s arrival, we aren’t waiting; we are just sitting.”

Enlightened beings come along to show us a way – a path – out of our confusion, but our salvation is up to us. It is we who have to become still and calm to see clearly and realise that our confusion never existed. We just reacted and became distracted, and were thus divided from our true nature.

Humans will run around trying to make things ‘right’ but this creates conditions for further sequences of division. The world is has a ‘rightness’ about it; if we ignore, we will be confused. Our true rightness is consciousness. Within consciousness is the clarity of calmness, and that is pure consciousness. The purpose of life is to realise this ultimate truth.

Enlightenment comes to fruition through sustained calmness and clarity arising from the sequence of realisations that lead to full enlightenment.

Or … we can stay in the traffic jam.
Actually, bodhisattvas do exactly that!

WE LIVE IN CONTRADICTIONS

We Live In Contradictions

Contradictions: ideas that oppose one another.

We live in two realities at the same time.
That is the contradiction,
as they are one and the same thing.

The two realities are ultimate and relative.
The mirror and the reflection.
Pure consciousness is the mirror,
while thoughts are the reflections.

Heaven and hell.
Dark and light.
The six pointed star illustrates two triangles,
one pointing up and one pointing down.
In truth, they are a unity,
each with a set of levels.

It is by virtue of recognising the dark that the light is known.
The more we see the dark, the more the light.
The more we are involved in the dark, the more we become the dark.

In confusion, we ascend and descend,
whereas realisation is transcendence.

OUR MANUAL FOR LIFE IS OUR KARMA

Our Manual For Life Is Our Karma

Karma is the book of memories in our mind that is the result of causes. It affects our behaviour and so, our life. Everything that happens in our thoughts and actions is due to this library of past experiences, both good and not so good. Feelings that come up are a product of the past and, if we hold on to them, we’ll get more of the same. This is our Samsaric existence; we go round in circles.

We are here to read this book of memories and learn from it, erasing the effects that are causing us pain. We all carry wounds from our past; it’s time to heal those wounds by being aware of our reactions to everything, thereby not re-enacting. It is simple but takes discipline, and it’s this that we have to practice – to stop being us, this baggage of mental pictures.

We break out of this riddle of confusion by going into neutral, just being aware and conscious. This is being skilful and intelligent. In the moment now – pure consciousness – we are not being us; we are just consciousness, with nothing being written or laid down. It’s a relief to let ourselves go. 😀

There may be the thought, “My memories are important to me.” Being aware doesn’t mean we don’t remember: we just don’t smother our life (and that of others) with our preconceived ideas, however righteous. Pure consciousness is a fresh approach to life where seeing is instructive, educational, life changing and enlightening.

We are the book of life.
It has been individually written by us.
Now is the time to do some editing,
instead of head hitting!

DARKNESS SUDDENLY LIFTS

Darkness Suddenly Lifts

There are times (many times :D) when we feel heavy, out of sorts and down – and then, suddenly, that feeling changes and we feel happy and lighter for no reason. It’s a karmic moment from our past: we must have done something good as nothing comes from nothing.

This means all things come to fruition and all things must pass, so don’t worry too much. It’s just either a karmic cloud or clarity passing by. The more the selfless deeds, the more the clarity. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true – the more the self-centredness, the more the clouds.

“Nothing comes from nothing
nothing ever could.”

WHAT DO WE VALUE MOST?

What Do We Value Most?
Turning the mind to reality.

If we choose money, power, football, family, friends, freedom, God, religion, science, nature … the question then arises, “What is it that values these things?”

Most will simply say, “I do”, and that’s that, but the conjuring up of desires is our dream state. This dream state arose because consciousness identified with objects and ideas rather than the origin of recognition. We are trapped in our illusion through ignorance of our true reality.

The answer must be consciousness for, without consciousness, these things and ideas would not be known. When we value consciousness, everything changes. We now see consciousness in everything, because consciousness is the reality of the observation. Everything becomes brighter – literally.

There is more.
When investigated, the very essence of consciousness is clarity and pure vision, free of human intrigue. Thus, we do not have to be scholars, academics, gurus or saints. We can be what we originally are. Now, everything makes sense because we see that whatever we value obscures this pure vision beyond intellect. This isn’t something holy or religious – it’s a fact!

Nothing compares to the joy of realising consciousness, which is free of limiting ideas. Everything is now a plaything, a toy – but then, we recognise how much others suffer for their dreams. Consciousness becomes the compassionate bridge over troubled, muddy waters!

Consciousness is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Gratitude is enabled, leading to stillness.

Recognising consciousness restores inspiration on the path.

Walking towards death, I fear nothing; clarity and compassion comfort me.

Karma prepares a table of abundance in the presence of adversity.

Goodness and inspiration present themselves, dwelling in pure consciousness forever.

FAKE NEWS IS INCOMPLETE INFORMATION

Fake News Is Incomplete Information

Fake: an imitation of the real thing.

Fake news is selective information.
All media selects their information for us to repeat.

News is incomplete truth; it’s a version of the truth. Truth is what sees, not what is seen.

It is the element of ‘truth’ that gives incomplete truth credibility. An imitation is being economical with the truth via deliberately obscure language. As news is a version of the truth, that allows another version to be presented, thus creating a complex picture that causes confusion and division.

Advertisers, politicians, religions, corporations, scientists – indeed, all of us – are selective with the truth. Anything we speak about is selective information, and it is for this reason that there are so many ‘spiritual’ groups or traditions, all claiming to speak the truth.

Ho, ho, here it comes again … ;D
The Buddha said,
“Do not take my word for truth; test it for yourself.”

Truth never takes sides.
Ultimate truth is pure perception.
Pure consciousness.

Everything else is
a temporary illusion … fake … click bait … something to argue about …
Even the Buddha’s words are an imitation of the truth, which is our own genuine experience.

WE NEED OXYGEN IN THE BLOOD

We Need Oxygen In The Blood

If you are feeling more tired than you should, look into the issue of the amount of oxygen in the blood. Get an Oximeter, and find out how and why to use it. There is information online by qualified doctors about this subject; they have more time to explain this problem than your GP, but go and see them anyway if you are concerned.

This is an extremely important subject, as a lack of oxygen can affect other parts of the body. This is why we need exercise, or a practice that enhances our body, brain, mind, and consciousness!

See my article “Tummo? Tummo!” a few days ago; I have only done this practice for a few days so far, but the effects are amazing. Deep breathing rejuvenates the blood and rejuvenates us.

Now you can meditate better and more clearly.
Take in some deep breaths throughout the day.
Breathing works!

It’s better than buying young blood at $8000,
or becoming a vampire.

CRUELTY WANTS TO BE SEEN

Cruelty Wants To Be Seen

Seeing cruelty and violence – even if it’s virtual – has a detrimental effect on our minds, causing reactions. For that, our immune system suffers. Why do you think there is so much killing in films and games? Everything becomes a battle. We think about good and evil as something outside ourselves, but the evil is the effect these films, games and news have on our psyche. We get used to it, becoming indifferent and dehumanising people.

Does anyone really want to kill others? No. People have to be convinced or provoked to go to war. War is deemed exciting by the young who are unaware that it involves killing, or practising killing. The pressure is constantly being stepped up to accept violence. We all know to do no harm, but we still have harmful thoughts about others because of ideas we’ve received.

There are those who stir up society, exciting us to take sides and find an enemy. Complaining, blaming and protesting is part of the process of being convinced to take sides. We do not have to be part of this Age of Strife. Agents provocateurs are those who intentionally encourage people to do something so that they can be caught in the action. There is much evil portrayed on camera for us to see, digest and react to, but as it’s all on film, we may not know what is actually real and what isn’t.

Non-violence is non-reaction. This doesn’t mean we ignore what’s going on in the world, but we just do not become part of it by being induced to join the action.

Once we understand how the mind works, we have empathy, and know what drives people. Then compassion arises, and we use skilful means to bring about balance in any small way we can.

If we learn anything from history, it’s that cruelty does not work as it’s the catalyst that wakes people up!

Hatred is lazy.
Love is challenging.

MEDITATION INCREASES INTELLIGENCE

Meditation Increases Intelligence

Intelligence is the ability to see
consequences, causes and conditions clearly.

Meditation is firstly the practice of concentration, being able to focus without distraction. This discipline enables us to clear the mind, just to perceive and to be completely aware. It allows us to step back from preconceived ideas, however much we treasure these. This, in turn, enables us to discern what is actually beneficial and what is harmful to the state of our mind. Meditation stops us going into the pattern of our routine behaviour. We do want to improve, after all!

The next step is to be aware of the awareness, which is consciousness itself. This consciousness is the source of all that can be known. We now rest in that awareness without thoughts, seeing that thoughts still arise, and that is what we have to work on. Thoughts may seem prolific, but that is because we are noticing more. Good, eh? With the ability to clear the mind, we can now scan our mind for information to suit the situation, rather than merely reacting and being predictable. This is intelligence in action.

Now that we recognise the problem of how we become fixated in our mind (as, through repetition, the brain wires up in a certain way), we can empathise and have compassion for others, instead of condemning them. This, of course, also applies to our self, which still has bias and takes sides, and so our I.Q. rises along with our E.Q. (emotional intelligence, which is the ability to empathise).

Never think that meditation is being a vegetable. We are fully aware, fully conscious beings. We may not become scholars, but we will be confident, happy and realistic in all situations.

Gradually, we will want to know the ultimate truth, and that is the essential nature of consciousness itself – it’s pure and empty of contamination. And we have always been this pure consciousness.

Stupidity is a lack of intelligence, understanding, reason and wisdom, when we impose our ideas on to a situation, thereby seeing through the bottom of very dark glass, drunk on our own ego.

A fresh approach is needed for change to occur and for the penny to drop*. Eureka!

When we know the essence of something, we can be free to be more creative rather than mechanical. We don’t need to wait for someone to put a penny in our slot, thus assuming we are their machine 😀

* ‘The penny to drop’ is used to indicate that someone has finally understood or realised something. It was originally used with allusion to the mechanism of a penny-in-the-slot machine.

CONSCIOUSNESS IS VERIFIABLE

Consciousness Is Verifiable

Realisation is the ability of consciousness
to verify its own purity
while resolving all karmic fixations,
thereby attaining enlightenment.

But what do we do now?

Our path is clarifying our confusion
that never existed.

WE ARE SLEEPWALKING IN OTHERS’ DREAMS

We Are Sleepwalking In Others’ Dreams

There are those who are aware of this phenomenon,
those who deny it, and those who aren’t bothered.

Globalisation is the process by which businesses
and other organisations –
develop international influence,
operating on an worldwide scale.

If we can see the consequences
of this power in the world,
their dreams do not become our nightmares.

When the Buddha came out of his ‘ivory tower’,
he saw the suffering of old age, sickness and death.
Questioning this, he changed.

We, too, have to see the suffering of greed, deception and injustice
within this technocratic age,
instead of merely accepting greed, deception and injustice.

Questioning this, we change.

COMMON SENSE AND COMMON KNOWLEDGE

Common Sense and Common Knowledge

We all have two things in common:
common wisdom and common ignorance.

Here, we are looking from a Dzogchen/Mahamudra/Maha Ati/Zen/Unity/Non-dual point of view. In other words, pure consciousness.

I only use ‘exotic’ words so that you can reference them. They are all the same in outcome, but just different approaches to our reality of pure being, which is without contaminating thoughts and judgements.

General knowledge is conventional understanding.
Common sense is first hand, pure experience, based on the ability to perceive and understand; seeing things as they are.Common knowledge is second hand experience; something to which we refer.

Let us consider meditation.
General knowledge about meditation is thought of as considering thoughts about something or being calm.
Common knowledge about meditation is sitting mindfully, focusing on something.
Common sense meditation is beyond knowledge; it is direct perception of consciousness, that is natural to all.

The Buddha’s word is common knowledge, while common sense is the actual experience that is open to all. This is why the Buddha said, “Do not take my word for truth; test it for yourself.”

General knowledge about the Buddha is probably the fat concrete statue that sits in a garden by the pond – it’s nothing to do with ‘real’ life. Common to most garden centres. 😀

WHEN DO OUR PROBLEMS START?

When Do Our Problems Start?

Our problems start the moment consciousness becomes attached to an idea. That first idea was ‘my self’. Why is attachment a problem? If we (consciousness) hold on to an idea, then we lose the clarity of consciousness.

There’s nothing wrong with ideas; it is fixation that causes us the problem of not seeing other possibilities. When we hold on to ideas, we build a bank of memories that now clouds everything we see or hear. We don’t just see – we see with attitude.

In the moment now, there is no attachment. There merely seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching. Attachment comes a moment later from the build up of memory, and habitual judgement occurs. These memories – pleasant and unpleasant – that we hold dear and cherish, obscure our clarity and freedom. In the moment now, there is no memory, but just nowness, direct experience, fresh experience.

When we come to our senses, we have no problems. There is just consciousness – pure consciousness. If we only rely on memories and judge from that reference point, we are constantly re-enacting the same moment, again and again. And then we start arguing!

We have never had a real problem.
There is only a personal, karmic theatre that is built on memories
to live through.

The more we experience common sense,
the less we are inhibited by common knowledge,
and the clearer the inspirations.

TUMMO? … TUMMO!

Tummo? … Tummo!

We know that when we sit properly (or exert our body) we breath properly, and feel brighter, feel better. If we slouch, we constrict breathing; our oxygen intake is limited and we feel sluggish.

This set of videos will introduce you to understanding the benefits of breathing properly. If this breathing exercise from Wim Hof is Tibetan Tummo practice (one of the six secret doctrines of Naropa), people should know about it, because it can work for anyone. We have to bear in mind, however, that in spiritual terms, we are only concerned with the effect of getting enough oxygen into the body to feel more awake and be aware of the presence of pure consciousness, rather than an enhancement of physiology to engage in extreme sport and prowess.

Chanting, singing, physical exercise, inner wind practice and watching the breath (shamata) are all versions of or preparations for this practice of breath control, cleansing the body by ridding it of carbon dioxide, oxygenating the blood, clearing the mind, and feeling good, relaxed and at peace.

We live by breathing!

All we are doing is expelling stale energy for enriched energy. It takes some time to get used to breathing deeply, so we can feel slightly uncomfortable at first. Once we feel brighter and more relaxed, we stop the physical practice to rest in awareness. We may find that we only have to do one round of breathing to feel the benefit, and then maintain by aware of the breath throughout the day. We gradually build up an awareness of the importance of breathing properly, rather than being unaware of the breath.

This exercise also generates heat in cold conditions, and enhances the immune system. As people tend to overdo things, practise carefully and follow the instructions. Use common sense. Find the point of just letting go, and realise the presence of pure awareness, pure consciousness.

Check out the comments under the videos

BUY INTO A SYSTEM, BUY INTO A PACKAGE

Buy Into A System, Buy Into A Package

Tradition is a system wrapped in a package.
We must open the package to see what’s inside,
otherwise we only adore the packaging.

Accepting answers without questioning
creates meaningless packaging that is stored in the mind.

When we question, we get answers.
That’s how it works.

Questions come from unsure experience,
when we are on the verge.
Questioning promotes ‘eureka’ realisation.

Eurekafrom Greek heurēka ‘I have found it’, uttered by Archimedes
when he hit upon a method to determine the purity of gold.

When we open up the packaging in our mind,
we determine and realise the purity of consciousness.

WE ARE ONE WORD … PREDICTABLE

We Are One Word … Predictable

For years, I’ve wondered, “Could there be a word that would sum up unconscious beings?” That word is … predictable: always behaving or occurring in the way expected.
As long as we are governed by desire, aversion and indifference, we will be predictable.

It doesn’t matter what we say or do, we will react by falling into our pattern. We might say, “I am conscious!” but here, we are merely referring to the perception of some thing on an ordinary, semi-conscious, functional level. This downgrades consciousness, while the nature of consciousness itself is our true reality. Realising this upgrades consciousness to our ultimate truth, being aware that we are the nature of consciousness itself – and so we live accordingly. Now, we will no longer be mechanical as every moment is reviewed, bearing in mind that, as we are in a human form, we need to be able to communicate in a skilful manner rather than merely maintaining an unconscious charade.

Charade: an absurd pretence intended to create a pleasant or respectable appearance.
From French, from modern Provençal charrado ‘conversation’, from charra ‘chatter’

Science searches for predictability in order to know exactly how a thing comes about. The outcomes can be either beneficial or harmful, and for this reason, we need more than street level consciousness.

TURNING LOVE INTO HATE, AND HATE INTO LOVE

Turning Love Into Hate, And Hate Into Love

If like can turn into love,
then dislike can turn into hate.

Sadly, we are not going to change the world in which we live: even the Buddha and Christ and Moses couldn’t do that. People will argue about anything and everything. Something praised will, at some point, be condemned, and likewise, something condemned will be praised. It’s the way of conflict, chaos and confusion.

Comedy, fashion, politics, dictators, religions, science, philosophies, guns, toys, sexuality, language, police attitudes, social attitudes … statues … all come to pass!  All are glorified, only to be condemned later and, in condemning, we set the new normal for further discord. That’s the trap.

When humans lose their sense of direction – their path to enlightenment – confusion ensues.

Luckily, there’s a path away from being constrained by our reactions to others’ ideas. This path is found within the esoteric teachings.

At every level, everyone is right, but that isn’t the complete picture. An age-old story exemplifies this: when several blind people touch one part of an elephant and describe it as reality, whatever they feel may be correct and be argued about, but that isn’t an elephant.

“THE DEVIL MAKES WORK FOR IDLE HANDS”

The Devil Makes Work For Idle Hands”

An idle mind is the devil’s workshop” :
an interesting piece of social engineering
to induce guilt.

When we are doing nothing,
we have time to contemplate the truth of our existence –
and we won’t want to better our betters!
😀

The word ‘idle’ means empty and useless. The devil (‘ingenious’ mind) wants us to be productive for its purposes, not ours. The wisdom of resting in our pure state of consciousness is useless to ‘ingenious’ minds as they cannot gain anything from us. We know what we need, and we know what we don’t need.

Our problem is that we have become so dependent on ‘ingenious’ minds that we forget that we are free, autonomous beings.

In the 4th century, the theologian Jerome expressed the idea that the devil finds work for idle hands: “If people don’t have anything to do with their time, they are more likely to get involved in trouble and criminality.”

Sloth is one of the seven capital sins in Christian teachings, but whether it’s a ‘sin’ or not depends on whether we are viewing it from a material or spiritual perspective. ‘Sin’ is merely a mistaken understanding, from an ultimate point of view.

To the dogma of a devil mind, realising and resting in our reality of pure consciousness may be seen as the cause of “trouble and criminality”, as a genuinely peaceful mind cannot be disturbed. 😀

Simply put, enjoy your own eureka moments of genius!

Idle: Old English īdel ‘empty, useless’, of West Germanic origin; related to Dutch ijdel ‘vain, frivolous, useless’ and German eitel ‘bare, worthless’.

Genius: late Middle English: from Latin, ‘attendant spirit present from one’s birth; innate ability or inclination’

“WHAT IS I?”

What Is I?”

In Latin and Greek, the word ‘ego’ means ‘I’. The moment we refer to I, we personalise consciousness.

What’s wrong with I? How did this I come about?
I is a mistaken identity; it is an attachment to consciousness.
We say, “That person has such an ego!” when, in fact, we all have egos that we carry around.

Our original consciousness is pure and empty of ideas; it is just aware, and reflects like a clear mirror. It’s doing that now, being spontaneously present. It’s what we are. It’s seeing these words. Look away from this screen and it’s still there, just being. It is like pure space – whatever we do in space, the space stays the same. Well, the essence of mind – pure consciousness – is like that. Whatever we stir up in the mind, essence (pure consciousness) stays exactly the same. We don’t have to do any spiritual conjuring tricks to see this – it’s just here, right now.

The mistake we make is asking, “Who am I?”

If we ask, “Who am I?” we will merely go round in circles,
because we will want to identify, failing to realise the pure experience.

Ask the question, “What is I?”

The essence of being is the mirror of pure consciousness, and ideas are reflections in that mirror. Whenever this essence identifies with the reflections and holds on to them, a false feeling of self is fabricated because now, that is all that consciousness sees. It forgets the seeing and it (or we) becomes caught and held. This clinging is maintained by our likes and dislikes which gradually become our ‘second’ nature. We hold on to our judgements about a situation, instead of acting accordingly to bring about harmony, dropping any fixations.

This is a totally different picture than the one we are taught. This world that we live in is all about boosting and bettering our I, our self image – and it is this that causes misery.

We will have some sort of ‘I-fixation’ until enlightenment. In the meantime, we use a ‘social I’ – a stand-in self image to which others can relate – in order to communicate.

Whenever we personalise consciousness, we limit experience,
and consciousness can never resolve into realisation.

Our fundamental nature is happiness,
free of all fixations.

OH NO, NOT “HAPPINESS IS WITHIN” … AGAIN!

Oh No, Not “Happiness Is Within” … Again!

We have heard this time and time again,
but still we search for contentment.

Why?
Because it’s too simple, too ordinary.

Our true being is ordinary, without special or distinctive features. It is natural and normal openness. Pure consciousness. We are complete in this simple ordinariness.

Ordinary: from Latin ordinarius ‘orderly’, what is commonplace or standard.

This orderliness is common place because we are pure consciousness that is naturally happy, knowing and kind. Although we all be the same pure consciousness, but our expression is unique.

Still, we can recognise our oneness, our ordinary ‘gold standard’. We cannot love without it. When we see others’ expression as different, we lack love.

All through the ages, teachers have reiterated this same message. This is because wisdom recognises that the world within which we live has been led astray. The world hasn’t fallen into chaos; it has been designed that way by unscrupulous people who only want power, and who deceive us to buy into their trickery. Taking sides, we become divided from our true nature of happiness, and we do the deceivers work for them. Fantasies and elaborate spiritual goals are promoted, constantly causing doubt; we become confused and go off centre!

How would we recognise ordinary?
We have to be one to know one.

In true meditation, there is neither meditator nor meditation,
but just ordinariness, free of doubt.

THOUGHT IS RECYCLED DATA

Thought Is Recycled Data

We show off our data …
… and it shows.

And then, there is Data Smog: an overwhelming excess of information.

We might think that the more information we have the more we will know – but more likely there is so much to sift through that we lose sight of wisdom, and become walking, talking smog. Both material life and spiritual life can become like that. Data controls computers and robots, and it’s what controls us too.

Below is computer terminology, but this can just as well apply to the human mind via all media, because we are the final recipients of data/ideas.

Ever heard of Ping Flood Attack?

Ping flood is an attack in which an attacker takes down a victim’s computer by overwhelming it with ICMP echo requests, also known as pings. The attack involves flooding the victim’s network with request packets, knowing that the network will respond with an equal number of reply packets … (TB – reactions!)

Social engineering attack techniques

Social engineering attacks come in many different manifestations, and can be performed anywhere where human interaction is involved. The following are the five most common forms of digital social engineering assaults:

Baiting

As its name implies, baiting attacks use a false promise to pique a victim’s greed or curiosity. They lure users into a trap that steals their personal information or inflicts their systems/mind with malware.

Scareware

Scareware involves victims being bombarded with false alarms and fictitious threats. Users are deceived to think their system is infected with malware, prompting them to install software that has no real benefit (other than for the perpetrator) or is malware itself. Scareware is also referred to as deception software, rogue scanner software and fraudware.

Pretexting

Here an attacker obtains information through a series of cleverly crafted lies. The scam is often initiated by a perpetrator pretending to need sensitive information from a victim so as to perform a critical task.

Phishing

As one of the most popular social engineering attack types, phishing scams are email and text message campaigns aimed at creating a sense of urgency, curiosity or fear in victims. It then prods them into revealing sensitive information, clicking on links to malicious websites, or opening attachments that contain malware.

Spear phishing

This is a more targeted version of the phishing scam whereby an attacker chooses specific individuals or enterprises. They then tailor their messages based on characteristics, job positions, and contacts belonging to their victims to make their attack less conspicuous. Spear phishing requires much more effort on behalf of the perpetrator and may take weeks and months to pull off. They’re much harder to detect and have better success rates if done skilfully.

DEALING WITH OTHERS’ KARMA

Dealing With Others’ Karma …
… is dealing with our own karma

Once we recognise our own karmic tendencies, this affects our behaviour (the product stored in the mind from our past reactions), and then we can start to recognise what drives others. It is here that either empathy or manipulation arise. Meeting of minds are educational and inspirational, and are our path to enlightenment … or hell 😀

We all want to benefit others and cause no harm, but we have to be skilful in this matter. We need to watch, listen and speak carefully, without exaggerating or escalating the situation. A non-judgemental space or atmosphere can release us from our karma. This is purifying, returning and resting within our original, pure state of conscious being.

Karma: where would we be without it?
😀

Just feel the love!

ARE WE OPTIMISTS, PESSIMISTS OR REALISTS?

Are We Optimists, Pessimists Or Realists?

We can only know by looking at our own mind’s reactions.

From the dictionary:
Pessimist: believes that evil will ultimately prevail over good.
Optimist: believes good must ultimately prevail over evil.
Realist accepts a situation as it is, and is prepared to deal with it accordingly.

The ideas in the mind are our software, and the brain is the hard drive.
Our personal psychology affects the way we see the world,
because the ideas we repeat create a repetition that fixes our
brain’s neuron pathways in a particular way.
Both pessimism and optimism impose on a situation, so our view has a bias.

From Wikipedia:
“Optimism bias is a cognitive bias that causes someone to believe that they
themselves are less likely to experience a negative event.
It is also known as unrealistic optimism.

“Pessimism is a negative or depressed mental attitude in which an undesirable
outcome is anticipated from a given situation. Philosophical pessimists are
often existential nihilists, believing that life has no intrinsic meaning or value.

“Reality: existence that is absolute, self-sufficient, or objective,
and not subject to human decisions or conventions.”

We all hope that life will work out well for us, so we live in that hope.
When we find that it doesn’t work out well, we fall into disappointment,
dissatisfaction and misery, and so we live our lives in some sort of fear.
It is this dissatisfaction that can lead us to question our so-called reality,
to find our genuine reality.

If we can understand what has been driving us – our emotions such as hope and fear – we are then no longer controlled by emotions. After all, we were only following the hopes and fears of others.

We still have passion, but it’s now directed towards a refined potential.

What do you think?

NOTICING OUR DREAM STATE

Noticing Our Dream State

When we are lost in thought, we are in a dream state. As ordinary beings, we don’t notice this as it’s our normality. We function in this state most of the day, as we are usually preoccupied; we actually do come out now and again, but don’t value this because we look for something more interesting.

In meditation – being aware -thoughts are we can clearly see this happening.
Suddenly we are not there – we are off somewhere.
Suddenly we see – and there we are!

If you notice this, celebrate! Noticing is being aware – we are free in the moment of seeing. When we constantly notice that we are in a dream state, we have realisation. This is what is called the unity of the two truths – ultimate and relative – the mirror and the reflection – heaven and hell. 😀

True being is being aware of whatever takes place in the mind. Pure consciousness is the mirror – the essence of mind – while thoughts are the reflections. Sometimes, there are no reflections, but just the senses experiencing, and everything is brighter.

WE’RE NOT A WHO, WE’RE A WHAT

We’re Not A Who, We’re A What

‘Who’ is a person.
‘What’ is the information.

Person = persona = actor’s mask.
Information = something learned about the person/the mask.

A mask is a covering or a disguise, and has many thicknesses.
Information is whatever’s behind that mask, and has many levels.

We think we are a display,
when we are, in fact, pure consciousness
behind the display.

Know what you are, rather than who you are!

DHARMA HAS TO BE PRACTICAL

Dharma Has To Be Practical

Dharma is not about adopting strange teachings and cultures. It’s about practical living, in harmony with our self and others. Of course, all spiritual paths can claim this, but the Buddha’s view is more penetrating. You may say otherwise, and that’s the point; if it works for you, then it works. It’s a continual process of investigation, analysis, stripping away and letting go.

Our self and others may not want to live in harmony, but that which just sees – penetrating consciousness – is free of bias, and is therefore harmonious. Our life is our teacher, and we deal with the consequences of our actions and reactions.

Dharma does not impose on our life.
Dharma is life as it is;
a recognition of clarity in confusion.
That is our path to realisation.

“But I don’t like my life, or the world we live in.”
What recognised and decided that?

UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE

Understanding Of Both Positive And Negative

Generally, we only want to hear nice things – nice ‘spiritual’ things – uplifting things to make us feel good. We don’t want to hear anything negative, but we have to be realistic to realise reality. Seeing the negative isn’t being negative.

The word ‘Buddha’ means awakening from the sleep of ignorance, having purified the dark fixations that obscure realisation. So we have to be aware of the dark side of our mind as well as the light side. In truth, they are one and the same thing, when appearances and recognition are simultaneous. To designate dark, light has to be already known.

Being told that we are enlightened and that we just have to realise this is a nice thing to hear – but that isn’t the whole picture. This enlightened view has to penetrate our thoughts and emotions, our self interest, which creates our habitual judgements, causing dissatisfaction.

The cessation of our obscurations is our work, our training and our practice.
That is why we are here.

THE MAINTENANCE OF IGNORANCE

The Maintenance Of Ignorance

We all like a good story; it’s entertaining.
Comedians, philosophers, politicians, scholars, corporations, religions all tell stories.
The media, films, books, songs all tell stories.
We also have our own stories about past and future,
and we fall into the trap of repeating all these stories.

Aye, there’s the rub!
In repeating stories, we exaggerate their worth and become attached.
They evolve into little porky-pies (London slang for lies).
We may say, “So what? There’s no harm in stories.”

Those little porkies take the place of truth, and they stick in our head.
It’s exactly what happens with ‘holy’ text, isn’t it?
We listen to stories and believe them,
and then live our lives according to those stories.

We will never find the truth in a story; they are make believe.
Stories are ambiguous and confusing, and open to interpretation.
This creates tensions and divides people.
Who the devil does this?
We do. We feed off stories.

When we stop believing in stories, we can become disillusioned.
Now that is a perfect state to be in.
It seems only the disillusioned and the dissatisfied turn to the truth.

We may want to be learned, spiritual scholars,
but that doesn’t expose us to the raw experience of life.
Without that, how can we empathise with others’ suffering?
It takes one to know one.

To understand this, we need to look at the Four Noble Truths again.

  1. All existence is suffering and dissatisfaction. Our lives are a struggle, and we don’t find ultimate happiness or satisfaction in anything we experience.

  2. The cause of dissatisfaction is the mind itself, which created an ‘I’ identity that craves. We blame our difficulties on things outside ourselves, either grasping at them, or pushing them away. This places us at odds with the reality of life which is due to the karma we have collected, creating the life we have at present.

  3. The cessation of dissatisfaction comes with the cessation of craving. As we are the ultimate cause of our difficulties, we are also the solution. We cannot change the things that happen to us, but we can change our responses in order avoid more of the same.

  4. There are paths that lead away from dissatisfaction. The Buddha throws responsibility back on to the individual, because our path is undoing our individual confusion.

Thus:
We no longer believe in others’ stories.
We can no longer be manipulated.
We no longer blindly conform.

To put this simply …
we now know what we are doing!

BRANDING RECOGNITION IS SOCIAL ENGINEERING

Brand Recognition Is Social Engineering

It’s all about conveying ideas
that stick in the brain without us noticing,
causing us to live in a perpetual state of confused anxiety.

We are either exposed to crisis after crisis
or lulled into soporific drowsiness,
both of which has an effect on our brain.

Films with guns.
Games with guns.
News items with police with guns.
Wars.
Crippling economics.
Contaminated food.
Mental health issues.
Pointless religions … pointless music … pointless sit-coms …
… pointless theories that obscure genuine conspiracies …
… and going around in circles all seems normal.

Why would anyone want to destroy humanity’s equilibrium,
when humanity has so much potential to become enlightened?

The weapon used in social engineering is our reaction.
This creates chaos, confusion, suffering, separation, depression, illness and dependency … “Recommended for you.”

Brand recognition is the way in which we learn to be programmed to recognise consumer goods and philosophies, without knowing we’ve done so. At a subconscious level, the brain lights up and recognises before we are actually aware of the brand, logo, tag line, packaging or advertising campaign. Before we know it, the same happens when we hear or see a name, a uniform or robes, and even if we react against this, we are still programmed. We are conforming to a type.

Through customer profiling, those-in-the-know know what ticks our box and what doesn’t, and when they present us with something we like or don’t like … off we go!

Psychologists – and now A.I. (“recommended for you”) – know more about you than you do about yourself – unless you are aware of your mind’s tendencies. Demonic forces lie in ambush. Reaction? “Gotcha!”

The same goes for the packaging of religion and spirituality; we conform without thinking. Buddha’s vital message, “Do not take my word for it; see for yourself”, is the key to realisation.

The realisation is not in what we are told;
it is in the evidence of experience.

Don’t just agree with the uniform.
Test everything.
Question everything.
Your quality of life depends on it.

We are here to become unstuck.
At the moment, we are the Great Stuck-ness.
Enlightenment is the Great Unstuck-ness.

TO BE SERIOUS OR NOT TO BE SERIOUS?

To Be Serious Or Not To Be Serious?

It all depends on what we’re talking about. The I? Consciousness? Our conduct? We have to understand what is of benefit and what is harmful, and which level we are speaking about.

Laughing everything off can either be reassuring or annoying. The Buddha said, “Not too tight and not too loose.”

At street level, the ‘I’ is our self that we take seriously; our self image is precious to us. Then, when we start on our path to realising enlightenment, this self isn’t taken quite so seriously. We do, however, acknowledge the fact that others take their selves seriously, and suffer as a consequence.

We realise that this I, this self, is our karma, which is our storehouse of reactions that come to the fore in all situations. Karma now becomes our (consciousness’s) teacher to show us our reactions and obsessions, and the degree to which we still take ourselves seriously.

Getting to the point:
When we start looking at the meaning of life, and why and how we got here, we come across all sorts of fancy stories. We go to churches, temples, synagogues, mosques and monasteries, and see a blaze of elaborations … it all looks pretty holy. It’s amazingly sophisticated – and a million miles away from where ‘I’ am. We either think, “I’m just not like that”, or we jump in with both feet.

Taking the package very seriously,
we may feel that it’s so magnificent
that we take a back seat, relinquishing responsibility.

Suddenly, a change occurs.
“Oh! I get it.”

Philosophies, religions, rituals, text, statues and glorious buildings
are only the warm-up event.

It is consciousness is the star of the show.
And consciousness always performs best when naked

WE WILL NEVER SEE THE TRUTH

We Will Never See the Truth
Until We Can Control Our Mind

Gently and slowly, take 10 breaths.
Breath in, pause. Exhale, pause. Count “One”.
Breath in, pause. Exhale, pause. Count “Two”.
And so on …

Be aware of thoughts, but do not follow them. If you do become distracted and forget what you are doing, go back to one and start again.

Gradually you will be able to do this without allowing any thoughts to occur. When you can reach 108, that’s pretty advanced (although we only have to count the breath for a moment or two to bring us back to realisation).

This is how we control our mind, stopping it from wandering and behaving in its habitual way. The ‘pause’ time – in which we notice that awareness is present – starts to lengthen as we relax. There is nothing else occurring, and we become more aware of awareness during the pause.

When looking into this awareness, we find nothing but awareness or consciousness. Finding nothing else, we realise that we are nothing but awareness or consciousness. The mind now ceases to control us. Thoughts will arise, but we know what is aware of these thoughts.

We don’t have to be perfect meditators. We just have to aware of what is happening in the mind, and that which is aware of those happenings. We may find (and will find) that the mind seems to become ‘worse’, with more thoughts. Good! This means we are noticing more.

When looking for the truth, we will never find it. It is only realised through becoming aware of that which is the seeing; that is the truth. We have been the truth all along. Stop looking. Just see.

One more step: when consciousness becomes aware of itself, it realises – in finding nothing else but consciousness – that that is pure consciousness, pure cognisance. That is the ultimate reality we seek. It’s not in a book.

Ordinary people can realise ordinary pure consciousness as, in truth, it’s nothing special. What is special is full realisation of enlightenment. You don’t see much of that around!

ARE YOU STILL LOOKING FOR WORDS … I MEAN, PROGRAMMING?

Are You Still Looking For Words … I Mean, Programming?

😀
The mind needs to be provoked, or it will just snooze on.

When we read words in books (or blogs), we get ideas. When we listen to words during teachings, we get ideas. In chanting texts, we become religious. Through studying those words, we become scholars.

For some, words are enough. For others, this isn’t satisfying because we need actual experience of those words, otherwise life seems pointless as we can no longer live through others’ ideas – we cannot take their word for things.

  • Religious people (those who become bound) programme themselves by follow the rules through fear.

Religion: ‘obligation, bond, reverence’, perhaps based on Latin religare ‘to bind’.

  • Scholars programme themselves by following the words in the hope of finding something new.

  • Those who don’t care follow the crowd, and are programmed through indifference, while thinking they follow nobody.

In realising the influences of these three inclinations,

we develop wisdom and empathy through introspection.

No longer looking for words,
these come by themselves through realisation.

In our aloneness,
we are no longer alone!

HOW CAN I BECOME PURE?

How Can I Become Pure?

We are nothing but purity – pure consciousness – for, without that, we wouldn’t be able to see clearly. We just have to get the picture straight, as it’s a bit wonky at the moment 😀

That which we call ‘I’ is an illusion as it is built up of ideas.
That which sees these ideas is the real you – pure consciousness.

We cannot be what we see, can we?
We are the seeing itself.

It doesn’t matter whether we’re gaming, looking at a financial paper, shopping, being with family, watching football, social media-ing, gardening, chatting away, loving nature … all the while, pure consciousness is present, just there doing nothing but being aware.

It’s like space. It doesn’t matter what happens in space, space does not change. Wave your hands around in front of you. Space doesn’t change. Pure consciousness is like that. Actually, time is like this too; time only exists because things have a beginning, a middle and an end within space. Time itself is timeless. Space is infinite. Pure consciousness is infinite.

Our problem is that we identify with activities so strongly that we lose sight of our original reality of intelligent space. We turn intelligent space into an intellectual space, inventing clever things to play with.

We don’t have to do anything in order to become pure, except drop attachments. We can still do the same activities, but they are no longer our whole world of entertainment.

This does not mean we can do anything we want because we are pure. That’s crazy talk, and often confused with ‘crazy wisdom’, which is actually skilful wisdom. Confusing these two is a huge danger. Power and imagination corrupt.

We need to be very skilful, kind and compassionate in the process of discovering our true nature of pure consciousness, as we do not want to create bad karma, bringing about unfortunate conditions for the future. Equilibrium is vital on the path to enlightenment.

The shock: what have we all been doing for so long? We are so used to crazy talk and crazy actions that they seem normal. ‘Crazy’ here mean to exaggerate; when we exaggerate, we embellish and elaborate our self with opinions.

We are nothing but purity. That is, first and foremost, our original essence, our first nature, but we have mistakenly acquired a second nature, a proud self identity.

We are nothing but purity.
We will always be the wisdom of purity.
We have never been anything else.

It’s folly to believe otherwise.
Freedom is realising
that we do not have to believe crazy people

😀

IT’S OBVIOUS WHEN POINTED OUT

It’s Obvious When Pointed Out

So what is the problem?

Our reality – pure consciousness – has been obscured by distractions for millennia. The ancients knew the truth, and this essential teaching has been handed down to us.

We have, however, also been given or created substitutes for truth, adorning consciousness with a self image which is more important to us. We became clever gods. This deviation gave rise to our ignorance; being obsessed by desires and aversions – the coded software that controls our behaviour – we are indifferent to our true reality.

A situation occurs, our button is pushed, and off we go.
Hint; this won’t stop until enlightenment.

How does it all work? How do we work? Nothing is being said that you do not already know, inwardly.

These three supreme qualities of being are emptiness (uncontaminated), consciousness (the ability to know) and compassion (unconfined understanding of empathy).

Emptiness is our essence.
Consciousness is its nature, and its expression is unconditional compassion.

We care. We can all see this, as we know what’s right.

When we ignore the light of these supreme qualities, they turn into darkness as desire, aversion and ignorance.

These qualities equate like this:

Emptiness, when ignored, fills with desires.
Consciousness, when it forgets emptiness, starts judging these desires and creates aversions.
In judgement, we lose Compassion, and ignore or become indifferent.

On an unconscious level, that’s how we work.

NB Ordinary judgment is holding on to ideas about someone or something which becomes our permanent state. Enlightened judgement is the ability to discriminate between benefit and harm in the present moment.

There is joy of seeing the obvious, and this does not have to be worshipped or become a religion. It is actually common sense. 😀

Special teaching?
No.
It’s obvious when we see it in action.

ADDICTION TO THE FEAR OF MISSING OUT

Addiction To the Fear Of Missing Out

Not satisfied with our lives, we wonder if there’s more ‘over there’. We all do it but, if we become addicted to this behaviour, there will be no end to it. Life presents us with whatever we caused, and that is what we have to deal with. Others have their own karma – the result of past actions and ideas.

It may not be easy to live a simple life as we’ve been snowballing with activities for a very long time. Calming down and dealing with whatever is presented now is important as it focuses our mind, and, more importantly, gives us time and space to rest easy. We are not biting off more than we can chew.

When we have time to consider things, we can become more creative and enjoy life – our own inner circle. Death is never too far away, so we don’t want too many regrets about wasting time and space running around, trying to find ‘where it’s at’.

We are where it’s at already.
We are never without pure consciousness
because we are pure consciousness.

That’s what we are missing.

In this way,
there is no need for pride or jealousy.
We practise generosity, patience, morality, discipline, concentration,
and wisdom-realisation.

Anything that comes within that atmosphere
is dealt with in equanimity.

BUDDHISM AND CULTURE

Buddhism And Culture

Buddhism is about creating a culture of genuine wisdom and kindness through direct seeing of the nature of mind. It isn’t about adopting another culture to overlay our own.

The prerequisites of a kind culture are generosity, patience, conscience, discipline, concentration and wisdom/realisation. Of course, we don’t need to be Buddhists to do that; we could be Buddhist-wise or Other-wise in our own back yard. A group or tradition can give us the appropriate help to remind us, and to keep us on the path.

The Tibetan Buddhist culture has its roots in the Bon tradition, and is based on wisdom and kindness; it is a perfect reservoir for wisdom knowledge. Tibet has no country of its own now, so it has to keep Tibetan-ness alive by maintaining its culture (all cultures do this when they move to another country, and we all become enriched by this gradual integration, as long as it doesn’t take over). We can support Tibetan culture, but we don’t have to become Tibetan. The essence of spiritual teachings is beyond culture as it’s to do with consciousness. Remember that Buddhism came out of the Vedic tradition, which was the culture of the Buddha.

We make the teachings our own by taking them to heart,
internalising them and living them
in accordance with our level of understanding.

And there is the dilemma …
There are many levels (yanas),
each having its own culture.

As we transcend the levels,
the influence of culture diminishes..

‘WOKE’ IS THE GREAT CONFIDENCE TRICK

‘Woke’ Is The Great Confidence Trick

‘Woke’ pretends to be awake,
but “woke” merely mean awake to some injustice,
rather than the wakefulness itself.

‘Woke’ is an insidious induction
giving rise to agitation, and therefore dullness of mind.
Making a noise confuses the mind.

Remember: we are awake.
When we know we are wakefulness itself,
we have perfect confidence.

If we expect wakefulness to be more splendid,
then we are deluded.
Wakefulness is spontaneous presence of being.

Spontaneous presence is pure consciousness
that sees all the tricks
as these are anything that causes a distraction.

It is empty cognisance that sees clearly.

WE DON’T REALISE THAT WE ARE BELIEVERS

We Don’t Realise That We Are Believers

The world has always been divided
into believers and non-believers.

We are all believers until we know.

There are believers who believe in an life after death,
whereas non-believers believe otherwise.
Likewise…
There are believers who believe this life is the only life,
whereas non-believers believe otherwise.

No one makes us believe;
we make believe ourselves.

It doesn’t matter what we believe,
true confidence and happiness
are the pure state of consciousness.

Anything that appears in the mind (the illusion)
is spontaneously recognised by pure consciousness.

When we see, we know.

NOBODY CAN GIVE US FREEDOM

Nobody Can Give Us Freedom

Nobody can give us freedom.
We have to realise that we have always been free.
We may be limited in a material sense,
but pure consciousness is free.
Never doubt that.

Society is a place of confinement.
The deluded inmates try to convince us
that this prison is our reality.
It may seem innocuous, real and safe, but limits our view.

When we realise this, we can happily exist,
as this confinement has no reality.
We can work within it when we know that we are free.

A teacher can help us,
but seeing the inmates’ behaviour
reveals the ‘reality’ of our situation.

DON’T TRY TO WAKE UP WHEN YOU’RE ALREADY AWAKE

Don’t Try To Wake Up When You’re Already Awake

We hear about people claiming to be ‘awake’, but awake from what?

We are all pure consciousness and, as such, are naturally awake, but we ignore this reality in favour of something illusory and banal. We mistake our acknowledgement of the imprisoning machinations in society as freedom when, in fact, we are still in a mental prison of ideas, dreaming of freedom.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Power corrupts so, if we fight against corruption – and even win – we are now the corruptible. Pure consciousness is the compassionate intelligence above and beyond such things. Pure consciousness does not want power; it is power. It is awake now, and its expression is empathetic compassion.

In this new world order of things, people are claiming to be awake by trying to escape, rebelling against repression and propaganda within this physical world. In try to survive, we ignore our mental prison. We’re all in the same boat of wanting to be free when we are free.

Trying to wake up when we are awake is counter-productive and has the opposite effect, whereby we stay in our dream world. Mara (demonic activity) knows and exploits this. Becoming politically, economically, socially, spiritually involved in human affairs, we lose sight of our actual reality.

We are not going to change the world. Mara has organised repression for decades to come. Through the weapon of technology, propaganda is pumped out, day by day.

When we do wake up, we see that we see – and that is the freedom we seek. No one can pull the wool over our eyes again. Without holding on to this seeing, we just see, and can no longer be exploited.

Why is realisation happiness?
It is a release from misery..

HUMANS ARE ENLIGHTENED BEINGS

Humans Are Enlightened Beings

So why have we become consumers of superficiality?
And why, when seeking out our natural wisdom, is it made so complicated?
Are both superficiality and complexity actually dumbing us down?

The simple truth:
We are enlightened consciousness,
distracted by superficiality and complexity.

How do we realise this?
Look, see and drop any attachment.
We can still engage in superficialities and complexities,
but we don’t have to see them has having any true reality.

Why don’t we realise this?
We are still drawn to superficiality and complexity
which arise when we become consumers of information.

We realise our enlightenment individually.
Don’t take a Buddha’s word for it:
look, see, and drop any attachment.

The Buddha didn’t make the teachings complicated
so that only a few can understand.
The teachings are about what we naturally are.

SELF-CONTROL; SELF-MASTERY

Self-Control; Self-Mastery

It’s easy to say, “Self-control” and “Self-mastery” but, with so much distraction, this topic may be difficult to comprehend. We usually take self-control and self-mastery to denote holding back our reactions, but here, it doesn’t mean that.

‘Holding back’ is an antidote, and antidotes do not solve the problem; they cover it up. It’s like saying, “Be nice”, when we feel angry. We can be nice, but the feeling of anger will return because the cause has not been addressed. Reactions will always come back, so we need to find where those reactions came from.

When we identify with thoughts in the mind, we become more involved and captured by the idea of ‘me’ and ‘my thoughts’. This identification with thoughts creates our I, our self. Notice we say ‘our’; this is actually consciousness – that which sees. The more we realise that it is consciousness that sees this self-identity in action, the more control and mastery we have over our display of expression. This isn’t an antidote; it is an understanding.

The self is a collection of ideas with which consciousness identifies, and we keep making the same mistake.

The Dharma is a series of teachings that helps us to undo our uptightness. The Dharma isn’t about learning a script to repeat; it is about personally investigating what is happening in our mind, which affects our behaviour. This is more than psychology, which is based around the contents of the mind; this is spiritual psychology based around consciousness – that which is aware of the mind’s contents.

There aren’t many who are interested in discovering their reality or how a self is created. They just accept their thoughts as their reality, and bulldoze their way through life. If we only believe and obey our thoughts, we are no different from a robot. If, on the other hand, we ask questions about our self, we awaken to a new light of being.

When we react out of habit, we have no self-control or self-mastery. We only believe that we have.

The test is to think about someone whom we dislike, and see if we can remain neutral from the reaction. Let’s say we have an aversion to someone because they dislike others: without noticing, we have fallen into the ‘dislike camp’. Dislike is aversion, which is a fear that leads to hatred.

Our mind reacts to names and symbols.
It’s called ‘brand awareness’.
We mentally salivate, just like Pavlov’s dogs.

If we do not have self-control
others will control it for us.

DEALING WITH OUR ANGER

Dealing With Our Anger

We all get angry at some time about some thing,
but in truth, we experience each emotion at some time.
All the emotions are wisdom;
anger is mirror-like wisdom.
This is subtle stuff.
😀

We first have to realise – or accept, or acknowledge – the possibility that we are not only consciousness, but pure consciousness. Pure consciousness is uncontaminated seeing, and is totally objective; we see perfectly, before our comments and judgements arise. This is the subtle appreciation of our being – seeing and the thing seen.

In ordinary understanding, seeing and the thing seen are a duality while, in ultimate realisation, seeing and the thing seen are a unity of non-duality. This is extremely subtle realisation.

Okay, so … when an emotion such as anger arises, what was happening just before that anger? In the first instant, there had to be seeing. We saw something that we then thought was wrong. A picture on the wall is wonky; seeing this, we may experience a subtle irritation and have to put that picture straight. Anger is connected to fear and desire, as we desire things to be right and we fear that no one else sees this … mutter … mutter … mutter … 😀

Sometimes, there are wonky people out there, and we feel that we have to put them straight as well! But before this occurs, there is pure seeing; something we see is wonky (off-centre, unstable) with that person. Even when acknowledging the smell of a beautiful flower, before that acknowledgement there was just seeing and smelling. It is the same with all the senses: in the first moment, there is pure perception, pure consciousness and so, before our interpretation and analysis, there is observation.

The funny thing is that, when we react, it is we who become unstable and wonky! This what happens when we listen to or watch the ‘news’ – our reaction destabilises us. 😀

To get to the point …
We are pure consciousness. In the very first instant of seeing something, the mind brightens. It’s alerted and, in that moment, is pure wisdom. So that seeing, that brightness, is the light of clarity, which is pure consciousness, our first nature (to stay constantly in this state would be enlightenment.) The emotion reminds us to return to our true, compassionate nature, which is compassionate because we see what others do not while empathising with forgetting our true reality.

Now, through clarity, we can address the situation
without anger and harm.
😀

The point is that our calmness and insight create an atmosphere that is pacifying. We become a reminder of what people already know.

There are four enlightened activities in Buddhism: pacifying, magnetising, enriching and destroying – bringing an end to ego’s games (enter ‘the four enlightened activities’ in the search box at the bottom of this page for more detail).

We are free in the moment of seeing.”
– Tulku Urgyen

Once we see, it isn’t subtle any more.
It’s obvious.

The more powerful the emotion,
the more powerful the wisdom.
